3 stars then 2 stars. Read up to chapter 600/850(finished).
This started out as an interesting xianxia albeit hobbled by the out of taste rape jokes. However, the story eventually declines in pacing tremendously, with the book becoming a dreary and boring slog.
Characters: 3/5 liked The characters here are varied and one dimensional. It's okay for xianxia. This book seems to be written for virgin incels though, which I'll get into later. The mc is decent, being smart and OP. What more could you ask for from your xianxia?
World: 2/5 okay This book focuses less on the outside world than most others. The mc is backed by one of the most powerful sects in the world from the outset, which makes the story rather new to me, since this is the first book I've read with that set of circumstances. Later on, many additional enemies are conveniently added just when the plot is slowing down, and we only seem to find out about new realms and problems when they are necessary to the story. It seems like the story was only planned up to chapter 400, and the author started extending things.
Story: 2/5 then 1/5 Speaking of extending things, the pacing is slowed down as well. Fight scenes get longer and longer, and by the 500s the mc is spending 75 chapters in one minor dimension when he previously went through 15 of them in just 10 chapters. The slower pacing and drawn out scenes becomes a problem as the mc interacts with the interesting characters less and less, since the side characters are what ties this sort of story together for me. Eventually it becomes really boring and a slog to read. I forced myself to read an extra 50 chapters after I felt like quitting at 550, and I don't think it was worth it. The author has some really cool concepts and plot twists, but that doesn't justify the eventual boredom and annoyance that I felt while reading.
This novel is written for virgin incels. The mc cracks rape jokes, and the side characters seem to like the mc too much. Thankfully the mc is such a lameloid that he stays single for the whole thing, so I could just ignore the offputting content and read more of the story. The rape jokes stop after the first 100 chapters. Maybe people complained to the author.
I could not stomach this book and as such I cannot continue no matter the plot. The protagonist is a young boy and while this is supposed to be "comedy" the severe misogyny in this book is astounding. Rape jokes are categorically not funny and this doesn't have one or two. They have a whole chapter named after rape. This book has extended "jokes" about rape and they don't even come across as funny. A man who raped many women was removed from one powerful position and given another but because he works for the protagonist now he's supposedly 'redeemed' or something? They talk about how the girls he raped genitals bled etc cuz they couldn't take this man. And the thing is as bad as all this would be from an adult character, this character is a child! A child talking about *cking another child's wife when he gets married etc. Even without the rape and misogyny... he's all around shitty to people and then when his 'servant' left him he thinks that they were wrong because oh he did so much to help the guy...the guy had no idea you were helping him because you were all around an arrogant, dismissive shit. And we're supposed to think the servant was in the wrong and disloyal for leaving him for someone who did not treat him that way. I read 93 out of 850 chapters. That's enough. I really can't stand to continue a book that sickens me this much. I did well by even making it to 93 chapters! The only reason I got so far is because I genuinely liked the drama which did change a lot it seems, and I wanted to know what happened to a character, otherwise I would have dropped this book sooner.
Great Chinese LN (LN) story. I think it is important to set the expectations right for this LN and that at its code it is a martial arts comedy---key additional word there being 'comedy'.
I was pleasantly surprised by the story and character development. Unlike traditional Chinese LN where you have a bunch of stupid, arrogant enemies and where only the main character (MC) is relevant with the side characters becoming redundant really quickly, here the MC uses strategy and intellect and teamwork to beat oftentimes smart opponents who are tougher than him. All the while, the story does great work of making a parody of the traditional wuxia/xianxia LN genre and other cultural jokes to keep it fun and entertaining--- I found that when it is making fun of tropes it actually makes those tropes all the more original in execution.
I found it a breath of fresh air in this genre of stories and would recommend, but again make sure you are expecting comedy to be interwoven in every part of the story.
