Joseph Byron began a photography business in New York City in the late 1800s. With his son Percy Byron and several family assistants, he built a successful documentary enterprise that lasted until 1942.
Joseph Byron's most popular subjects were actors and actresses in theater productions. He also accumulated a vast library of photographs of New York people, neighborhoods, homes, businesses, and ships. Percy Byron donated the photograph collection to the Museum of the City of New York.
The photographs in this collection are high-quality reproductions with accompanying text on the history of each photograph.
