More than a month after the disaster that crippled the world, Elizabeth and Toad are struggling to survive. Soon, however, Elizabeth faces a fresh problem, as she realizes that the virus might have claimed another, even younger victim. Meanwhile, Thomas discovers more survivors who are trying to reclaim the city. But is the mysterious Quinn really going to lead people to a new dawn, or is another act of unimaginable horror lurking right around the corner? Days 46 to 53 is the fourth book in the Mass Extinction Event series, continuing the story of a worldwide apocalypse seen from the eyes of two very different people in two very different parts of the US.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
Days 46 to 53 is the fourth book of the Mass Extinction Event series by Amy Cross, an extremely prolific writer that has over 200 books published. Having said that, I think that Ms. Cross needs an editor to help her keep her disparate plot points organized. There is a thread at the end of the previous novel that is lost at the beginning of this one. I will not critique further, because many people have noticed it. I love the story despite the fact that I am uncertain as to where we are going, and how we are getting there. Still because I purchased the entire series, I am willing to travel on. Ms. Cross has an innate ability to tell an interesting story with engaging characters. If you read my previous reviews for the series, I hated the two leads as self-absorbed children with no real sense of responsibility, but I am starting to like the two leads and look forward to their eventual meeting, which of course is going to happen. There has been no revelation as of yet but, come on. It would not make cohesive sense if they do not meet. I am growing to really like this series a lot.
This is the third book I believe. I’m really enjoying the series.
The only reason I gave this a 4 star is because of the inconsistency. Thomas shot his brother he didn’t use a shovel. Thomas was also travelling to meet his sister. What happened?
Thomas really is struggling there. With Joe & George gone and then consequently Quinn gone as well, Thomas is grasping at straws. Quinn appeared crazy when Alice died but she was just...crazy. Not harmful crazy. This Lake Eerie people might be harmful with a capital H crazy and that was evident from Mark's line "See? It's easy to get something on the end of your hook. You just have to offer it what it wants". This is what I guess Mark & his community have been doing for a while, keeping people there with whatever assurance they needed the most. With Thomas, it was all about providing a stable system. Thomas lost so many things at once that a stable & running community like Mike's made him feel normal and helped him not to focus on things that happened in his life so far. So yeah, Mike got his fish.
Elizabeth is a mix of lucky & unlucky. Lucky cause she got Toad and Toad's neighbor coincidentally seemed to have crutches from the time he broke his leg which became handy for her. Unlucky cause she doesn't have anything below her right knee anymore which will obviously slow her down and that kid Rachel. Rachel is getting weirder & weirder by the second. Seriously though, how does she not see that that thing is possessing Rachel or whatever. And she can even move around now, great! All I hope is that Toad comes back alive cause I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.
Anyways, the story is getting mhm better. Day 54, here I speed.

Good storyline but the characters are frustrating!
I just completed book 4 and my rating of 3 stars is for the overall series so far. The storyline is really good and that is what's kept me reading to this point. The characters however are a different story. I understand that the world has pretty much ended and things are crazy and scary but the 2 main characters Thomas and Elizabeth are incredibly stupid! Just when I think one of them might be getting their act together a little bit they go and do something even more stupid than before. It's never ending! Stupidity is a big pet peeve for me so there have been times when I almost gave up on this series because it just becomes too frustrating. I've also noticed a few inconsistencies in the story which is a little annoying. They're small but they're there. I've read other books from this author and those books were filled with numerous typos or just using the wrong word. Lots of errors. It was very frustrating! I have to say this series has a whole lot less of that kind of thing and I totally appreciate that. I'm going to move on to book 5 because the storyline is definitely keeping me interested but I'm not sure how much longer I can take the stupidity so we'll see how much further I get.
I really like the series so far but what irritated me in this one are the inconsistencies.
First, Joe was NOT killed by a spade like they said in this book but he was actually shot in the head. Secondly, at the end of book 3 joe tells Thomas to go to the four corner monument (CO, UT...etc). That Martha the sister is risking her life coming from California to head there so Martha and Joe can do this together but in the beginning of this book..nothing. Its like she completely forgot about Martha. The sister does get mentioned a few times but its Thomas saying that he thinks she is probably dead but no word about meeting her or heading to the 4 corners at all. What happened?
Lastly, a lot of the things that were supposed to be a surprised arent that surprising to me. Most of the time ive figured them out before they happened so its not as exciting as id like but its still interesting to read. I like the series and really like zombie and/or apocalypse books so this is up my alley.

Still a fun read but I feel like the author wrote themselves into a situation they didn’t intend to in the last book. Mainly, the last book had Thomas apparently heading towards a meeting point to meet up with his sister from Cali. This book however doesn’t even mention that moment or why he decided to head to Chicago instead of going to meet her like Joe told him to do. She was supposed to meet him in the middle, soooo... now what?! Oh well. As for Elizabeth, her story is getting worse by the day (for the character, not for the reader). Hopefully the author has figured out where they want to go with this series of books so they don’t change the story up without any warning again.
Yes, the author has forgotten an important plot development from the last series (how Thomas was meant to meet his sister) and changed Joe's death, it is still a great read.
As the story of survival unfolds, it becomes more and more chilling and nothing is predictable or straightforward, and how it is going to end is still a mystery, helped by the introduction of further characters and the one who started this disaster.
Well our characters have continued in the crazy world. The infected have rotted away, but humans are our own worst enemy as Thomas seems to be finding out. Rachael tho baby may be more than she seems. Toad is his helpful in this book and his character grows. Emma is battling her own demons but getting stronger. I look forward to the next book.
I have not enjoyed a series og books like this for years I am looking forward to the last one and I love the way T people keep finding each other t Thank you Amy T cross
I was so into this story... until I started this book... it dosent even pick up where the last one left off... it's the same characters but their story lines have changed mid series... what the heck? How do the main characters have definite missions at the end of book 3 and then just totally change course and personality with no explanation? It's like there are chapters missing in between the last one and this one. Highly disappointed.
One thing is for certain, the book takes a hold of you and there are so many surprising events that what you thought will happen does not happen! At some instances you get frustrated with the boy protagonist but it’s just human behavior, stupidity. A typical teenager who’ve experienced many traumas from the Event!
Anyway, it is a very captivating fast pacing tale, post the apocalypse. At times, frightening. Human animals are truly the most despicable beings on the planet and the Event proves that time after time.
Amy Cross has finally managed to make a meaningful progress through this series which has been stale throughout the previous installments. Both Thomas and Elizabeth are starting to realize the severity of the situations they are in especially Elizabeth who has shown growth with the presence of Rachel as this little child gave her purpose. Rachel on the other hand is a scary child and I think she was the source of information when the creature confronted Elizabeth in the previous book. Thomas is pushed back although some hints of resistance are being shown which I’m glad of. In all the previous books, he rarely takes the lead and is almost taken prisoner by some authoritarian figures. The cycle is repetitive but I'm glad that Amy is changing his attitude finally. The ending is the interesting; Quinn, Thomas, Elizabeth, Toad, and Rachel are going through some sort of unexpected encounter. The next book should start explaining some of the mysteries.
I am enjoying this series but would like it better if the author (1) got it proof read (2) had it checked for continuity errors eg Thomas shot his brother in one book and in the following edition recalls killing him with a spade! Elizabeth gets into a car with a couple of guns then they weren’t mentioned again. That said I will continue to read the series to find what happens to the main protagonists.
Well while I’m throughly enjoying this series some of the inconsistencies are starting to bother me....Thomas was supposed to be on his way to meet his sister at 4 corners but ended up in Chicago....I let that one slide a bit when it seemed that he didn’t know directions....that’s just one of several I’ve noticed now.....although I’m still very much enjoying the series
I was really expecting the books to continue on a daily basis but I guess it would’ve been more mundane to follow our two survivors on a day by day basis. However, where Amy picks up is just far enough to not miss that much and close enough so no explanation necessary, or very little. A good read but a little predictable in some places for the outcome. Nuts abound and Rachel is just who she is!
There is just ridiculous problems coming about that make zero sense even in a fictional novel. The characters swear to God constantly because I assume the writer ran out of any other phrases. It seems everyone is bad now, and no good people remain.
The story and the characters have continued through this most recent episode still going strong and with just the right amount of intrigue to make me eager to find out what happens next. A really good series from beginning to where I am now!
The story is really good, don't understand why there was a plot thread left over the previous book that was not addressed, and that Thomas' brother was killed in a different way, but the book was enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Rachel scares me, there is something evil there. Toad is missing, leaving Elizabeth to care for Rachel. Elizabeth cannot go anywhere due to Toad sawed her leg off due to inflection. Cannot wait to read next book, and thank you for entertaining me!
Thomas and Elizabeth both find survivors but can they be trusted ? It is hard to tell whether they have been traumatized or are dangerously insane but hope for the best until they prove you wrong ?
Massive continuity errors, the story dragged badly, and the characters were irritating. It honestly feels like the author must just churn it out without ever reading back over what she has written. I struggled to finish and won't be reading any more by this author. Definitely would not recommend.
I've eaten up every one of these books so far. I love the characters and the storyline. The non-typical zombie is refreshing as well.
Spoilers below:
I was in shock when Toad cut Elizabeth's leg off. I never saw that coming. I remember the cut, but the distraction of Rachel kept it on the back burner, as intended. I'm pretty sure Rachel has the hive mind that's why she stares like she does. I'm hoping the budding romance between Elizabeth and Toad grows, I'd like to explore that. I can't help but feel like Rachel is a little demon, but she can't help that. As for Thomas, I remember Joe telling him he'd found their sister in California and told him where to go. But it seems as though the author didn't want to follow up on that because Thomas hardly even mentions it, let alone show enthusiasm like when Joe told him. Also, I loved how Joe could move in the hive mind as well. I'm hoping that wasn't a fluke. Regardless, I'm onto the next book.
