After ten years at war, Jev Dharrow looks forward to hanging up his sword, relaxing with a cool mug of ale, and forgetting that the love of his life married another man while he was gone. But when his ship sails into port, a beautiful woman wearing the garb of an inquisitor from one of the religious orders waits to arrest him.

His crime?

He’s accused of stealing an ancient artifact with the power to start another war. Jev would gladly hand over the artifact to stop more suffering, but he has no idea where it is or even what it looks like. The inquisitor woman definitely has the wrong person.

Inquisitor Zenia Cham grew up with nothing, but she has distinguished herself as one of the most capable law enforcers in the city, and she’s next in line to become archmage of the temple. All she has to do is find the Eye of Truth, and her superiors are certain that Jev has it.

He tries to charm her with his twinkling eyes and easy smile, but she’s not letting any man get between her and her dreams. Especially not a thief.

If Jev can’t convince Zenia they’re on the same side, find the artifact, and clear his name, his homecoming will turn into a jail sentence. Or worse.

Free Fantasy Stuff (FFS™) from The Emperor's Edge's mommy, Lindsay Buroker? Yes, purlease. Okay, so some people shelved the book as 'romance,' but I'm pretty sure that's a mistake on their part. Besides, it's not like the blurb mentions the MC's past lurve life, his meeting a beautiful inquisitor woman at the beginning of the story, or his trying to charm her pincers off. Absolutely not. So all is good. No revolting lovey-dovey stuff to be had here. Everything is going to be alright. No need to panic pre-emptively and stuff.

Emo elf is the best elf!

Plot - interesting, slightly generic. Something about a stolen artefact, false blame, conspiracy, getting naked and so on.
Characters - pretty interesting. Emo Elf takes the crown of course, but everyone in this book was entertaining and relatable! Makes you question the point of a plot, wish the whole thing was about all of them bantering. And fighting - fights were great! Especially when Emo Elf snaps.
World-building - you've seen it before, but with a few unique elements. There's a hint of some deeper politics and history. Maybe the second book will give more information.
Audiobook - brilliant! Loved all the voices. Guess which one was my favourite... XD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Conclusion
Emo Elf makes it all worth it. At least for me XD
Now excuse me, as I go check more audiobooks by the author.
The best part here is the dialogue! You just have to love it!
Every character has a very distinctive voice and it's a pleasure to read them banter! LOL
Since this is a first in the series the world building is still a work-in-progress and we're slowly introduced to it. There's no info-dumping!
The romance part is very slight - more than a hint, but less than a jumping-their-bones!
The action is non-stop and everything is fast happening - the whole story is placed in two-three days time!
On to the next!
Started a little slow. Took a bit to get into it. Maybe a little too romance heavy for a first book in a series such as this. We'll see if she pulls back a tad in the next book, which I am inclined to read as this had a few interesting elements, namely a mysterious outcast elf who is definitely on the surly side. Now THAT'S my kind of love interest (humans can be so mundane). If you are familiar with and have liked any of her other stuff then you will probably like this as well. She knows her niche.
I think there is something about the simplicity of the way this author tells a story, which works for me at this moment. My brain can't concentrate on anything too complicated right now, and the way the tale unwinds is just what I can handle at this time. I am also kind of partial to the author and tend to give her much more slack than I do some others, so I can't guarantee that I am being objective.
The main characters are a lady detective - inquisitor from a temple of one of the four Dragon founders of this world, and a nobleman coming home from ten years spend in a losing war against Elves. Of course, their initial meeting is not under optimal conditions and they have to find out if they can trust each other.
There are three secondary characters who are worth mentioning - a dwarf with a hook arm who is not very good at understanding human culture, a young female monk who kicks ass, and an Elf, whom another reader here very appropriately named "Emo Elf" 😃👍. I hope we get more of all three of them in the rest of the series!
Overall, a fun story in a very closely related to ours world, with some magic, but counting on the characters to carry the narrative. I enjoyed it 👍😃!
Likeable, but I found myself missing Amaranthe and Sicarius ... Jev and Zenia simply don't do it for me the same way. Their dynamic isn't the same even though Buroker's writing is still really enjoyable.
OK, so first off, I enjoyed this and totally plan to read the next two books because I think the story may improve now that the h isn't a part of the Water Order.
But...
It wasn't awesome.
SO it's a world shared by elves and humans. They were at war until the current king died in battle. The war was one of those wars that manifest out of nothing. I imagine there were probably greedy jerks who orchestrated it for their own gain and maybe we will find out more about that in the next books... I hope.
Anyways, Jev returns from being in the war, with his compatriates, a mysterious Elf who changed sides, and a dwarf who dreams of cutting gems. Now other reviewers go on about the Elf, but honestly I don't see the draw. I thought he was an asshole. A loyal asshole, but still an asshole.
But anyways, Jev I did like. He's sweet but not a coward. He kicks ass but isn't mean. He's just an all around great guy.
Zenia was harder to like. She's one of the top inquisitors for the Water Order, a quasi religious group with their own police force. They use dragon tears (mysterious magic stones) to compel and interrogate their prisoners. Zenia comes across as proud and prejudiced against the upper classes. The author would have other characters talk about how important she is and how people are scared of her because she is so good at her job... but it's all talk. In the book she keeps making assumptions and mistakes and Jev comes across as the more intelligent of the two. So I felt kinda let down.
By the end of the book she is less prejudiced and her pride is more gumption. But at the start the chip on her shoulder was deplorably large.
The side characters are humorous and the world building is decent.
Zenia shows up to arrest Jev for a stolen magical artifact but was the artifact really stolen and what is it's magic and where is it?
Safety is good
Investigating a run of the mill theft turns into an explosive case that ends up being anything but ordinary...
So in this book we have our h, Zenia, who is a confident/no-nonsense Inquisitor from the Water Order that has just been given a task by her superior to hunt down a thief that stole a unique artifact from the Temple. She is eager for a new challenge, and if she solves this high profile case she might just get the promotion and recognition she's been wanting...
Our so called "thief" Jev is an affable, and charming Zandar (think noble) who has just returned to the shores of his homeland after fighting a 10 year war--only to be met on the docs by a beautiful yet haughty Inquisitor insisting he needs to be brought in for questioning.
This meeting start off badly due to Zenia's past prejudices towards the Zandary, and Jev's friends (an Elf and Dwarf) not taking lightly to their Captain being hauled away the second he hits land. However, with many outside forces working against our leads, and serious plots to Crown and Country being discovered- our two opposites-attract mains might have more success working together than against one another.
As with most of Buroker's books I really love the main characters and side characters. (Love me some Rhi too) Also, the world building is excellent, and the magic system is well defined.
This is a start to a really interesting series!
Jev Darrow returns from a decade fighting the elves in a war he doesn't believe in. He returns home to find his bookish Lieutenant has been elevated to King after the death of the previous King and all three of his sons from a mysterious blood disorder. No sooner does Jev disembark the boat than he is arrested by an Inquisitor who accuses him of stealing an artifact from one of the religious orders.
Inquisitor Zenia Cham hopes that successfully completing her latest mission will put her in a good position to succeed the head of her order when she retires. However, nothing about this mission makes sense and much as she hates to admit it, her prisoner seems to be innocent.
What follows is a classic Lindsay Buroker romp as Jev and Zenia (together with Jev's former comrades a dwarf and an elf) try to find this missing artifact and why so many people are willing to kill to possess it. Along the way they also discover the truth about the disappearance of Jev's mother and death of his brother. There are magical amulets (Dragon's Tears) which can enhance a wearer's powers, secret crime societies, xenophobia and more.
A great fun read if you like snarky priests, laconic ex-soldiers, magic, dwarves, elves and dragons.
Unsurprisingly - as I've come to expect from every book Lindsay Buroker writes - this tale is engrossing, fast-paced, and extremely entertaining to read. There's a ton of humor in the dialogue, quirky characters, a bit of magic, and a diverse cast of characters (elves and dwarves).
I can't find a single example of something that bothered me, which is insanely rare.
If you loved some of her other fantasy series (in particular, Dragon Blood) then you will most likely enjoy this series as well.
I hope to see many sequels!
This a very predictable book if you are at all familiar with Lindsay Broker, but that didn't stop it from being compelling and a lot of fun.
I picked this as my next series from her based on wanting to read a spy/heist type fantasy book right now over her high fantasy or sci-fi offerings. I know they will all be much the same because she has a formula that she sticks to, but she writes great characters, snappy dialogue with a good sense of humour, and the plot never slows down.
She is absolutely one of my favourite authors and this book didn't let me down. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
The mystery was good. The pacing was good. My overall disappointment with the story is I don’t like my fantasy campy. Tapestries of dragons taking a bubble bath is campy. Characters talking about beach vacations and Aloe Vera rub downs when the story is based in an epic fantasy world is campy. This story also isn’t deliberately posed as a campy storyline. So it’s not my cup of tea.
{3.5 rounded up} This was a surprising fun read, with plenty of twists and lore to further explore. The various characters were very sympathetic with plenty of potential growth to be had. Contrary to personal expectations, the book manages to wrap {even if not forever} most of the main threads in a rather endearing manner, for more tales to follow.
description
Sometimes I'm in the mood for something fun, and Lindsay Buroker always delivers on that front. This is a light fantasy with romance thrown in. There is the trademark Buroker humor, including innuendoes. I'm hoping they don't get too excessive in this series, like they did in her Fallen Empire series though. If you're looking for something deep or epic, then this is not the series for you. If you want something fun and slightly campy, where the characters bounce humorous dialog off each other, then this might be your thing. So far I like the two main characters and the plot. Hopefully that will continue to be the case.
Good, but not quite amazing
This book stands on its dialog more than anything else. The author does a great job with conversations and banter. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because it lacked an interesting deeper element of mystery or fascination that will thread through multiple books. Dragons tears, elves, stolen tools, and a bit of murder mystery wasn’t quite enough for me. Any of them could have been but they all felt a little neglected. Again, good dialog and characters, but just a little bland. I definitely plan to keep reading books in the series.
This book does contain a fair amount but of preoccupation or innuendo about sex. Nothing too explicit, but not something I’d suggest to a middle school kid (maybe not high school either).
I have no idea if I liked this book or not. It was interesting, about a relic that was stolen and all that happened to find it.
I liked Jev and Zenia but not as a couple. I didn’t feel any kind of chemistry at all between them. So, if the author was trying to write a romance she failed. I’m not sure I’d want to go forward with this series.
There was nothing even resembling romance! AND no swearing to speak of, what was supposed to be swearing was just silly, “By the Founders,” “Four Founders, it was dark in these mangroves,” By the pointed teeth of the Founders,” maybe not silly as much as stupid.
As to the narration: Vivienne Leheny was just okay for me. Her voices were fine but sometimes she was sooo dramatic and other times she read like a robot. She wasn’t consistent.
The classic Buroker elements are here: banter; steam conveyances; political intrigue which the characters are not so much engaging in as victims of; two people who appear confident but are privately full of doubts, and who look set to have a slow-burn romance; magic, here a bit more front-and-centre than usual. Another new element is the presence of elves and dwarves.
Somehow, though, the whole thing didn't quite come together for me. I enjoyed it well enough, but I wasn't so entertained or gripped that I am rushing out to buy the sequel. Perhaps the formula has become too formulaic.
2.5 stars
My third and last time reading Lindsay Buroker (on a friend's recommendation). This book in particular is fine, although incredibly bland. And that's the most I can say about Buroker's writing--it bores me. It promises so many things--action, adventures, heists, intrigue, great characters, great world building, complex plots--but delivers none of those things (for me). And yet, I can see why it works for other people.
Hmm. I liked the premise, however the execution was slow. There was no chemistry between the main characters, Zenia was a hypocrite spouting one thing and acting another. Jev didn't end up doing much so I couldn't connect with him. I had high hopes for this series and I don't think I'll continue on.
Ok, terpaksa beralih baca siri novel ni sebab siri novel yg dibaca sebelum ni agak kebudak-budakan plotnya...
Ni novel pertama dari siri Agents of the Crown. Siri novel ni bergenre fantasi+penyiasatan. Rasanya, siri novel ni lebih kena dengan jiwa sebab wataknya lebih matang, realistik dan ada sense of humour. Plotnya pun best, layan jgk baca watak2 utama jalankan penyiasatan.
Novel ini diceritakan dari view 2 watak utama. Jev Dharrow, seorang lelaki dari golongan bangsawan yg baru pulang ke negaranya selepas 10 tahun berada di medan perang. Watak heroin pula ialah Inquisitor Zenia, seorang penguatkuasa undang2 (ala2 polis dgn kuasa magik) dari golongan pertengahan yg serius dalam tugasannya. Zenia diarahkan oleh ketuanya untuk menahan Jev atas tuduhan mencuri artifak penting yg digelar Eye of Truth. Mereka berdua yg pada mulanya selalu bergaduh akhirnya terpaksa berkerjasama untuk menyiasat dan mendapatkan kembali artifak itu. Rakan2 Jev; Cutter dari bangsa Dwarf dan Lornysh dari bangsa Elf turut membantu.
Rating: 3.9 references to armpit odor
The more I read of Buroker, the more her style is becoming apparent. Witty dialogue and intelligent characters are her specialty. Oh, and non-traditionally badass heroines, of course.
Pros:
- Haughty, yet endearing heroine.
- Snark.
- Sexual innuendo.
- Monk who regularly beats people with her stick and then laughs about it.
- Complex characters.
- Tons of future plot potential. This book is paving the way for an epic saga.
Cons:
- Short time-span. I think the book only spans the course of 2 or 3 days. I know, I'm picky and annoying.
- Slightly less badasserie than I would have liked. Such is life.
For sure will continue in the series!
It took some time for me to get into this story - the start was a tad confusing and there were a few too many characters thrown in all at the same time, but I persevered.
It took some time, as well. to get to the crux of the story, but by then I was enjoying the verbal interaction and the sly 'adultness' of the story.
The actual plot was a bit thin - I wanted more about the brother and the war - and some aspects were glossed over bit, but all in all this was a fun read and I finished the book with a smile.
Its the first in a series, but it's also a story in itself - no cliff hanger, just the promise of further adventures.
Four stars for the fun!
After a decade away at war, Jev Dharrow wants nothing more than to put down his sword, get suitably drunk, and take it easy for a while. Being arrested by an inquisitor for supposedly stealing an artifact he's never even heard of years ago the second he steps off the ship definitely wasn't part of the plan. For Inquisitor Zenia Cham, retrieving the Eye of Truth and returning it to her Order's temple is her chance to prove that she has what it takes to be chosen as the next Archmage - and if her superiors are convinced that Jev Dharrow is the one who has it, no amount of easy charm and claims of innocence will sway her from her task. Probably.
Lindsay Buroker never fails to craft an engaging and enormously entertaining tale. For her Agents of the Crown series, she cheerfully employs some good old classic fantasy tropes (that constantly bantering elf-dwarf duo sure seems familiar somehow) interspersed with new elements, throws in plenty of humour, action and a bit of romance, lays out a complex new universe I can't wait to see explored further and populates it with an instantly likable cast of fun new quirky characters I'm looking forward to spending more time with.
Mini-Review:
The story has some cool things like a unicorn healer and an off-kilter grandmother that likes to bake things. I like Jev & his two buddies. Zenia did not grow on me at all. Rhi, the pious monk, was the best of them all. She's a side character. The unicorn is mentioned in one sentence out of the whole book.
I have to say this is the worst story I have read by the author. Nothing about the main plot or setting came across in a clear manner. I thought I would give the series a go but reading this book felt like work.
