Biography and critical history of the famous Jesuit missionary, and a clever piece of modern scholarship. The figure of S. Francis does emerge powerfully from the many extracts from the numerous letters (now mostly lost) that he sent constantly from various places. These letters show his constant love and concern for the infant Society of Jesus and for the many small churches that he built, S. Paul fashion, wherever he was able to find strong foundations. His affections fell particularly to the Tamil people of the Kanyakumari region of south India and the Japanese people of Yamaguchi, even as he personally worked for long periods of time at the administrative centres of Goa and Malacca. This book certainly also provides a good knowledge of the geography of south and south-east Asia. Recommended for a good understanding of the origins of the Jesuit Order, the politics of Europe's Age of Discovery and the extraordinary enterprise that was the maritime organisation of the time.

Father Brodrick has done us all a great service by writing this well documented, sober, but lively biography of Saint Francis Xavier. The love and patience of Saint Francis as he dealt with so many obstacles, many from his own countrymen and religious shows through in so many pages. The faith and folly of Saint Francis Xavier puts to shame those of us who are so enlightened as to think that there is no pressing need to proclaim the love of Christ to the world. Highly recommended!
