This cookbook was compiled by Mrs Kleber from dozens of recipes contributed by leading men and women of the Suffrage movement in the UK and US, including Lady Constance Lytton (aka Jane Warton) who was imprisoned four times for her campaigning, Julia Lathrop the first woman to head a United States federal bureau department, Jane Addams, who won the Nobel Prize, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, author of The Yellow Wallpaper and Jack London, American novelist, journalist, and social activist.
With none of the fads of modern-day cooking, these simple recipes range from hearty breakfasts to healthy soups, salads and meaty casseroles, alongside contributions such as Pie for a Suffragist’s Doubting Husband and the Dumplings That Never Fail. Choose between the many tasty desserts such as Suffrage Angel Cake or Devil’s Food to enliven your party.
Celebrate the centenary of women getting the Vote by cooking and eating some of the Suffragettes’ favourite meals. Why not devise your own Suffragette Menu with recipes like Blanquette of Veal or Sweet Potato Soufflé? And don’t forget your Creole Balls! You might follow that up with Parliament Gingerbread or Strawberry Shortcake á la Mode. To top it off, why not toast the Suffragettes’ success with a Peppermint Cup?
“For someone in search of an enjoyable way to get a feel for the suffrage movement, a cookbook is the way to go.” - Marguerite Kearns, Suffrage Wagon News Channel
Pretty neat old cookbook sprinkled with wisdom from both male and female “suffragettes,” I hope as women we remember the time when we couldn’t and never sit out voting.
Du gras, du sucre et beaucoup de frustration, c'est ce qu'on sent dans ce livre. Je vais clairement essayer plein de recettes qui me feront penser à mes grand-mère qui ont donné leur vie pour que la nôtre soit meilleure. ❤
