Nervy Corvus had escaped the dark underbelly of Missouri’s meth world years ago. But when her husband, a well-established psychiatrist, dies unexpectedly, she finds herself widowed—and in danger. Her husband’s casket barely in the ground, a slew of killers, tweakers, lawyers, and judges converge on Nervy. Each one has their own reasons to ensnare, exploit, or even kill her, but she’s not going down without a fight. Desperate, cunning, and shameless, Nervy is willing to barter herself, her husband’s reputation, and an entire community’s psychiatric records to get her revenge.Emerging from a small-town setting comes an oversized story of tragedy, vulnerability, and finding the strength to go on. Watering Weeds provides a gripping view of entrenched corruption and brutality—and one woman’s refusal to succumb to the dark forces surrounding her.
Nervy lives in a small, close knit town in Missouri that has been taken over by addicts , mainly meth but really anything they can get their hands on. Nervy is married to a reputable psychiatrist that was just found hanging from a tree ruled a suicide. Nervy doesn’t come from a clean past, having a different life before marriage and knows the events around her arent by chance but more premeditated. Someone is out to destroy her and will stop at nothing until it’s done.
I liked the set up of the plot, the characters really came alive as the story started. However, it was just an overwhelming amount of characters that all seemed to play a part in taking Nervy down. By the middle it became difficult to keep everyone straight and what part they played. I felt the book could’ve ended a few chapters before it did.
The further I progressed through this book, the less I could find to like about it. The plot strings together one event after another ranging between bleak and absolutely horrific. Unfortunately, the lack of either well-developed or likeable characters sucks any emotional impact out of the scenes. Add in a completely unnecessary level of animal cruelty, coupled with stupid and inaccurate Pit Bull stereotypes, and the book becomes unbearable. I was reading in audiobook format and actually stopped 20 minutes from the end because I was so disgusted.
From the description of this book I was expecting something different than what this was, although I am not sure why. The main character, Nervy, has her life thrown into chaos when her husband commits suicide. As Nervy's story unfolds it becomes one of survival and it never is really in question as to why or from whom. It is all about how she can not only survive but get revenge. This is the story of how Nervy eliminates the threat to her life and finds a new less complicated one.
This was really good for a first novel. I thought the story line was interesting and believable. Lots of characters all brought in at the very beginning of the book, that can be a little confusing at first. Many twists and turns which I love in a mystery. Nervy (the main character) is a tough cookie, strong and street smart. I hope there is a sequel. I'd read it.
I would and will recommend this book to family and friends! Liked Nervy's character in the this story! She's seen tough times and made it through! Enjoyed the story!
I liked this book. interesting story about he struggle of a former criminal woman trying to survive. the person on the cover of the book reminds me of the actress Dale Dickey. If there is ever a movie produced of this book I would suggest Dale Dickey as Nervy.
