Introduce Baby to the wonderful, colorful elements that make up his or her world!
This board book for babies, ages 6 months to 3 years, features big, bold, and bright photography from Theodore Gray's bestselling adult book The Elements , paired with delightful, baby-friendly text. My First Elements includes 10 elements, one per spread. Each spread features a big photograph of the element on one page, such as an iron horseshoe or nugget of gold. The opposite page shows photographs of the places in baby's world where the element is found from balloons for helium to a swimming pool for chlorine to seaweed for iodine.
Theodore Gray is the author of 'The Elements' and 'Mad Science: Experiments You Can Do at Home-But Probably Shouldn't', and of Popular Science magazine's 'Gray Matter' column. He is the proprietor of periodictable.com and the creator of the iconic photographic periodic table poster seen in universities, schools, museums, and on TV shows from 'MythBusters' to 'Hannah Montana'. In his other life, he is co-founder of the software company Wolfram Research, creators of the world's leading technical software system, Mathematica®, and WolframlAlphaTM. He lives in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
An introduction to 9 elements commonly found in the world. Each highlighted element gets a 2 page spread includes the name, symbol, and atomic number along with 1-3 places/things in which you can find that element in the world. The last spread of the book is a full period table with pictures of each of the elements (or the people/places they are named for if they are really unstable).
If you've never seen Theodore Gray's books for adults go treat yourself and hunt them down. (Actually, even our elementary students love looking at the vibrant photos in his books.) I think it is fitting that he should write a board book. I definitely can't think of another book on the elements for toddlers out there. And the way he introduces the concepts are easily grasped. Start your little nerd off young with an introduction to atomic numbers, elemental symbols, and the fact that elements are all around us.
As a chemistry professor, I just had to buy this while I was perusing Theodore Gray's website, especially since there was a sale on the autographed copies! I happen to have samples of four of the nine elements explicitly listed in this book to give to my son when he's a little older to accompany this book!
Just finished this with my two yr old, he seemed to really enjoy it. I like how it explains a few elements in a very easy to understand way for a toddler to absorb. He is now running around saying "Iron, Gold, Helium!!" 🤦🏻♀️😂
While my one-year-old just wanted to chuck this book across the room (he's in a "BALL!" phase), my seven year old was really interested in learning more about elements. Beautiful photographs on a black backdrop makes this book really eye catching.
An introduction to 9 elements. Includes the name of the element, a picture of the element in its pure form, and a few places/items where one would find the element.
A great book to introduce very, young children to the elements and periodic table. It includes 9 elements, their names, symbols, atomic numbers, and household items that are made with each element. Great way to see science and make it more hands-on.
