I live in small town Tennessee, with three children still at home and two grown kids just blocks away.

I am an unrepentant romantic, a caffeine addict and a true dork. I apologize for none of these.

4.5 Stars, very good indeed.

It's terrifically hard to write "floating alone in the ocean" for hours. Similar things have been done in books, movies and television for decades. But here, McKenna shows her strong hand and control of the emotional and practical challenges of Maggie being on the edge of death for hours.

The semi-chaotic scenes on shore, of Wyatt and Boudreaux and her friends scrambling to first make a plan to search for her, and then realising it, very much increase the feelings of panic and desperation.

Maggie-in-the-water is pretty much as heroic as we have come to know her, but this is also an opportunity for McKenna to expand on her background and memories, and to show her desperately challenged mettle.

Normally, I'm not keen on trapped-in-hurricane or overboard-for-hours plotlines, but in both, McKenna holds her narrative and prose together, and paints a wonderful tapestry of the community around Maggie and her family.

Great stuff.

Quotes, Maggie's thoughts, early in the water:

“I hate you!” she screamed, and it took her a moment to realize she wasn’t yelling at the water, or the men who had dumped her into it, or even the sharks. She hated Gregory Boudreaux, who had gifted her with PTSD and robbed her of her natural element.
-
She could feel them circling her just out of sight. Skimming the edges of the personal bubble she pretended she was in. Seconds away from accelerating toward her, mouth wide, teeth stained and broken, ready to save her from drowning.

I have certainly enjoyed each book of this series, but this one definitely has a different, but exciting, storyline. Ms. McKenna created a masterpiece this time, which kept glued to each and every episode from beginning to end. The ending is very descriptive and definitely final. This is a must read for all you readers interested in real life adventure.

Five stars and more expresses how exciting investigative story really is. The descriptive adventures of Maggie's new adventure really caught me by surprise, but , as always, the storylines continued to keep me glued to see how she survived. I have been a follower of this wonderful, and heartwarming series since book one. Too, the sequence of characters was a little different in this new adventure.

I was unable to set this story aside until the final word had passed. There was definitely a lot of worked went into the development of this amazing dialogue and the entire book is one exciting event after another. I definitely recommend this book, and series to all readers, regardless of your normal reading habit. I felt the compassion, and dedication, if all those involved throughout the entire story.

Please do yourself a favor and read this heartwarming adventure, as you will most definitely be as impressed ad I was!

Thrown into the Gulf, with no life-saving means and a paralyzing fear of sharks? What a nightmare! A frightening scenario that was so well-written that it was easy to put myself into Maggie's mind. I was a wreck! Excellent and wonderful series. Fabulous characters. I very much look forward to "seeing" them all again soon. (More Boudreaux!)

So disappointed. Great fan of the author and the series. But over 200 pages of a character treading water is an agony not a plot.

Overboard

I hate that this is the last book of this series!! But it sure went out with a bang! The bad guy didn't suffer enough! And that's all I'm gonna say about that! This story, even though I do know it's home area very well, was entirely out of my imagination. I've played in those waters, I've fished from that beach, I've literally walked hours on it, but I don't swim. So maybe I was more tense than anyone else reading this! I cried, I got angry, I was afraid, I was tired, I was thirsty! Even though I knew how it would end, I felt every emotion that every character felt! Even Coco & Stoopid! I was wrong on who actually made sight, but I'm glad it was who it was! Now, if Ms. McKenna will return to this series one day in the future...I'm already ready! I was so happy when I 1st found my 1st Appalach story, & even happier to find that it was the 1st of a series!! You see, I was introduced to the area in the early 70's, when my parents began fishing there. They even bought a small house in East Point, that I wish we still had! Many of my best memories were made in the Appalach/East Point/SGI area. If she wrote 100 more, it wouldn't be enough for me! BUT...even if you've never heard of the place, & since it's "Florida's Forgotten Coast" you very well may not have, these books are well worth the read! I'd almost bet you'll want to visit after you do read them! I know I'll never get back there again, but these books were almost as good! I WILL re-read them, no question! And imagine myself on the wilderness island I knew way back then.

Oh. My. Goodness. Gracious!

Wow. Just wow. Dawn Lee, I know you took extra time with this one and it shows. I loved the fact Miss Evangeline and Stoopid kept popping back in, they’re two of my favorite characters. William was in top form. But Dawn Lee. What you did to Maggie is just unforgettable. Maybe not unforgivable, maybe she’ll speak to you again some day. Probably not.

Getting dumped off a boat twelve miles into the Gulf. My worst nightmare. I too have a phobia about sharks, due to my own close encounter of the worst kind. I’m the one standing in ankle deep water on the beach, while all my compatriots are having the time of their lives playing in the water. All the sharks aren’t beyond the sandbars. Some of them lurk just beyond the first sandbar, in that trough. And a six foot bull shark is a fearsome killing machine. I found that out the hard way. Never again.

This is the first book in the series that made me cry. It also made me laugh hysterically at times! Some of the comments... “he’s so dumb he could get run over by a parked car”. And Miss Evangeline’s carrying on. I love it!

Thank you, Dawn Lee. It was so worth waiting for. Just wish I hadn’t consumed it so fast. Downloaded it this morning. Dropped what I was reading like a hot potato. Finished it already. Keep writing!

Ten books that read like ten chapters of a colorful and eventful novel

The 10 books in the series can be quickly devoured and each one reveals that life in Franklin County, Florida is a tapestry of what is beautiful in rural America. Strong family values coupled with interesting humor and brave characters who must face life and death head on. Parents who read these stories may appreciate that over indulgence never builds character and they may see the value in never moving a child while he or she is still in high school. Older readers may see that, as time goes by, secrets rarely remain secrets and living a life without pretense is better than perpetuating lies. These books make one long for a meal of fresh shrimp and oysters, with a good mug of chicory coffee. Certainly the Forgotten Coast will no longer be unknown as this reader longs to visit Apalach, and I suspect other readers may also.

I will miss Maggie, her family, friends and Apalach!

I bought the first book, because I am interested in any author's interpretation of Florida. I was born in Alachua County Fl and as a child, heard (and read) stories about North Central Florida, both coastlines, and the Panhandle. My father's relatives migrated from Folkeston Georgia after Civil War to Marion, Alachua and surrounding Florida counties and brought with them stories about their family's migration from England, and their struggles to find a new life & home in the "southern colonies" of this
new nation. I feel Maggie's love of the Gulf, the landscape and the flora and fauna and share her desire to live away from the hectic life of the cities and the people ...
I have enjoyed all 10 books and I want them to never end ... to sit in the woods on my porch and continue reading about 'Apalach'.

Different

This was not the usual Maggie and Wyatt storyline. It was so different that it took me a while to get into the story. It was extremely well written and truly spoke to how strong people can be in times of severe adversity with a touch of Stoopid to lighten the mood. There were interesting vignettes going back to other books plus an extremely telling comment by Bennett Boudreau about his relationship with Maggie. He tells Grey he doesn't regard her as his daughter but as his only friend. Read the book. It's not an easy read because it's not what you would expect. I hope the next book delves into some of what came out in this one. And as always....more Stoopid please. He has a lot to say about the people he loves and the state of his world!

Suspenseful Amazing Plot

A 5 Star book for sure. The suspense kept me up all night. The overboard plot is simply deceiving. I cannot imagine how the author Dawn Lee McKenna even imagined this story!
I have been binge reading through the entire Florida Coast series thinking how can this story get better. Yet it does. I am in love with the characters and feel like I know them. But of everything I would say that McKenna is the master of suspense. She keeps the reader hanging on for dear life. Read Overboard. You will be amazed. It is that good! Recommended for all brave readers.

A definite thrill!

I love this series and each character is special and real, even the animals are a part of this world and make it better! This time is a bit different in our mystery, as Maggie gets lost in the ocean and has to face her worst fears. I tell you, the author did an excellent job because I could feel that fear, desperation and tension right along with Maggie. The fear and desperation of her family and loved ones was also well written, I loved how they all came together to find her. It was a great book and you don’t want to miss it!

Worth the wait!

The only thing wrong with your books, Dawn Lee, is they aren't long enough! I never want them to end! This was one of my favorites...loved their memories. Writing is so descriptive that I felt I was right there in the gulf with Maggie. I read 2 or 3 books a week and this is one of my favorite series (right up there next to Jesse McDermott) and definitely my favorite cast of characters. We even rerouted a trip to Florida last year to visit Apalachicola to check out Maggie's favorite places. Thanks for continuing this series!

Heart-stopping Tension

While this is a superb story, continuing excellent character and relationship development, having good pace in forward motion, and a satisfying outcome, I found myself wanting to skip to the end outcome, because I was so distressed by the valid angst and tension of the characters. My favorite reward was Bennett Boudreaux's final action. I love Maggie, Wyatt, and their family, and the reality of the situation was so well written that I experienced all of their difficult emotions. Another Five-star Success for Dawn Lee McKenna!

For me this was her best work so far. I have read all of her books. I just could not put this one down. It feels like her characters are a part of me. Overboard proved to be a emotional roller coaster. One of my biggest phobias is the same thing that Maggie was going through, this was a tough read for me. Wow was it good ! The ending with stopid was the best. It’s hard to admit that I fell in love with the rooster I’ve never met. I suggest reading all 10 of of this series. OK well all of her books
Great job Dawn!

Riveting!!!

Dawn Lee McKenna continues to keep you on the edge of your seat...waiting...praying...but never quite sure how things will turn out. I stayed up way too late to read the book in one sitting-because I could not out it down!
I know these characters...I understand them, and laugh and cry with them. From Stopid to Miss Evangeline, I love each one. I don't know how I will survive waiting for the next book...I miss my friends already!

I love this series but this book was amazing. Do not start it unless you have time to finish it because you won't want to put it down. I felt like I was there with Maggie, my heart pounding with real fear. She is definitely braver than me. If you haven't started the series, I would recommend starting at the beginning. The characters have grown so much since the beginning, I think you will get more out of each book. Already looking forward to the next adventure!

Heart stopping!

An excellent book to continue this series! Though my favorite favorite character is Wyatt, with his charm, strength & humor, every person that makes this series so special is woven in to Maggie's most frightening nightmare. To really join in life in Apalachicola you need to read the series in the order written; then you'll be like me & anxiously waiting for the next book!

I love Dawn Lee McKenna’s characters – both human and animal – and in this book she has a unique and interesting way of developing each one separately from the others.. Life is too short to read a book I don’t like, but I love Dawn, so I read it all.! . . Even though it was drawn out, there were a lot of "Memories" not told about in other books. Oh and I would really love to meet Mrs. Evangeline, and Stoopid, sit on the porch early morning, with a cup of coffee!!!

Very interesting

I would have never thought a story about stranded at sea would keep my interest but it did that and more. Maggie's plight was well written and kept me completely engrossed in it. My favorite is still Bennett Boudreaux. There are some emotion flashbacks that will bring tears to your eyes, did me. The ending is perfect, Boudreaux there seeing her get her ocean back.

Another can't-put-the-book-down story that takes us on an adventure into the Gulf of Mexico. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling the book for someone. I will say that the title covers the basic story.
*I read this in the days just past Hurricane Michael. The setting for this series of books has been ravaged completely as Mexico Beach, FL was ground zero for the hurricane coming ashore. Please keep all of those affected in your thoughts and prayers.

It’s cold and gray in the northwest and I needed a good warm book, so I found this one set on the Florida gulf coast. Thrilling story, apparently the 10th in a series, but definitely stood alone. The devastating fear of sharks becomes a horrifying reality for Sheriff Maggie, when drug dealers push her overboard with a bucket of chum and a dead body. This is a quick read, and enjoyable fictional, yet real feeling, account that sucks the reader in.

What a way to end a series

Another great book by Ms. McKenna. This one was very good and suspenseful but very different from the others. I sincerely hope Ms. McKenna continues writing more good reads that follow these characters through their lives together. Like reading this author very much. Realized I haven't read the first four books so am looking forward to going on to these next!

I have finished all of the books. I have to say this plot was not what I had in mind for the last book. I did enjoy her struggle and growth and change. Definitely worth reading. I still want to read more about Bennett Boudreaux. I hope you do a series on him. I was hoping for more of him. He is a character I was drawn to. I did hate to see this end. I could see Netflkx.or some other streaming make this into a series. Would be nice

Lowest rating yet

This is getting the lowest rating from me bc the book covered almost nothing but her time in the water. Throw back memories , sure, but this one could have been so much more. There was never a resolution to the people actually behind this event and I can’t say more as to not give it all away. I was also hoping for some closure on the kid in the book before this one. It seems as if may be the end but if it’s not closing those threads seems like a good idea.

Overboard indeed

Always in the back of my mind when in the waters off St. George Island or wading in Apalachicola Bay to fish where the thought if sharks. Dan White fished for sharks right off the beach and caught a 7 footer. Some if the other guys would fish for sharks in the channel behind Lynn's Oyster house. Scary creatures.
If you see Van Johnson or Skip Shiver tell em Billyrob said high.

Quick but fun reads

From the first of this series to the 10th one, the reader is transported to small town Florida, the land of sunny warm beaches, hardworking fishermen and occasional hurricanes. The author makes you feel like you know the townspeople. There are secrets among them that keep you guessing. Their banter makes you feel like you would like to be a part of their town.

Very Enjoyable

I can fully relate to the absolute terror of Maggie’s situation! I used to love swimming in the Gulf, but anything above waist high makes me panic these days. I liked how the story gave you new insights into the characters pasts and some new history. I look forward to the next one!

Read this book! It's really good!

Dawn Lee McKenna writes wonderful stories. The characters are realistic and intriguing. I have read every book she has written and have enjoyed each and every one. This book is the type you can't put down. I could not wait for it to come out, now I'm sad that I have already finished it. I can't wait for the next one!

Exceptional!!

Format: Kindle Edition
Overboard has it all. Our favorite characters from the series and a story that will keep you reading. I couldn't put it down and read late into the night. I've become attached to all of these people who inhabit this forgotten coast. I have a special feeling for the area since my father lived there as a child with his family. The towns in the area are familiar from his childhood stories. I am very happy to have found this wonderful series by Dawn Lee McKenna.
