Because our personalities inevitably conform to our gods. We have witnessed this down through history. When we worship inferior versions of God – money, status, security, power, pleasure, you name it – we become like our idols. If your god is money, you’ll become materialistic. If your god is sex, you’ll become increasingly sensual. If your god is yourself, you’ll become more self-focused. But if your God is the almighty Creator of Scripture you’ve got a lifetime of joy ahead of you. So it is no exaggeration to say that the study of God is the supreme study of a lifetime. It lifts our thoughts, steadies our nerves, purifies our motives, expands our confidence, and strengthens our influence. It’s the greatest subject we could ever study, for God is the apex of all reality. One of the reasons we don’t love God as much as we should is because we don’t know Him as well as we ought. Trying to comprehend the person of God is like trying to capture all the galaxies of the universe in a child’s prism. Yet the Bible encourages us to try, for God seeks to be known. In this teaching series, I want to personally introduce you to the God you may not know—to His knowledge, holiness, all-pervasive presence, unlimited power, love, and the other qualities that make Him who He is. Knowing our eternal God changes our daily lives—and He is well worth knowing, for He alone is worthy of all praise!
Dr. David Jeremiah, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, felt God’s calling on his life at a very early age. Born February 13, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Jeremiah was raised in a family deeply committed to ministry. At the age of eleven, Dr. Jeremiah and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was the Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and in 1953 became the President of Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.
As Dr. Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s leading in his life, he followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1963, Dr. Jeremiah received a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College. In that same year, Dr. Jeremiah married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson who also was attending Cedarville College as a business major. He went on to earn a Masters degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967. He completed additional graduate work at Grace University and was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981.
In 1969, Dr. Jeremiah began Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and developed a Christian school grades K through 12. In the 12 years he served as pastor, Blackhawk Baptist Church grew from 7 families to 1300 members. He also launched The Bible Hour television program.
Dr. Jeremiah heeded God’s call, and in 1981 he and his family moved to California where he became the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church.
Shadow Mountain Community Church is one of the largest churches in San Diego County. It is also the home of Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools.
As Dr. Jeremiah began his ministry at Shadow Mountain, he felt God’s calling to continue the broadcast ministry he started in Fort Wayne. In 1982, Turning Point Ministries became a reality.
Today, Turning Point's 30-minute radio program is heard nationally and internationally on over 1800 stations and translator/satellators. In recognition of Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, he received the Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1999 from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), in August 2002, received the Award of Merit from the Western Chapter of National Religious Broadcasters for Excellence in Broadcasting and Faithfulness in Service, and in 2006 Turning Point received the Best Radio Teaching Program Award. Dr. Jeremiah has served on the Board of Directors for the NRB since 1996.
Turning Point launched a television program in 1982 in San Diego and went nationwide in 2000. Now seen around the world through cable and satellite technology, as well as on terrestrial stations all across the United States, conservative estimates suggest that close to 200 million homes around the world have access to Dr. Jeremiah's Bible teaching each week. Turning Point Television offers a half-hour Bible study message and a full hour worship service with the same great preaching. Carried on several national and international networks such as TBN, ION, and INSP, Turning Point Television has most recently been added to Middle East TV Network and BET, the Black Entertainment Network.
Dr. Jeremiah is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels.
Along with his speaking schedule around the country, Dr. Jeremiah also finds time to fulfill another passion in his life, writing. His books are always gripping and right to the point. Some of his books include Escape the Coming Night, The Power of Encouragement, What the Bible Says About Angels, Prayer The Great Adventure, which brought him The Gold Medallion Award in 1998, God In You, Gifts from God
I think this is one of those books that I read just to pass on to someone else.
It's a good book, I think it could be a great book for certain people. I enjoyed it, but it didn't impinge on my consciousness much.
Really, there was only one major paragraph that I found very convicting, so I'm going to put it here for everyone else, maybe other people will find it convicting too.
"Dear Jeohava-M'Kaddesh (the God who sanctifies), I need more holiness in my life. I need greater victory over temptation. I need strength over sin. I want to represent You more purely to a corrupt world. Please help me grow in my sanctification."
I just think that's a prayer that all of us can pray. We all need more holiness, we all desire greater victory over temptation. God answers prayer, so why don't we pray for those things?
My husband and I read this book together. It was a great time for us to grow together. It really brought about some excellent discussion! Dr. Jeremiah is a gifted teacher!
I really enjoyed this book. It goes deeper than most, but in an engaging and interesting way.
I've been a Christian for a long time, so the title might appear to be for people who don't know God. But that's not the case. This book simply looks at several attributes of God with refreshing Scriptures, stories, and insights. The final chapter also looks at many of the names of God, their meanings, and how they express His attributes discussed in the rest of the book -- with a really interesting tie into the familiar 23rd Psalm.
Explained easily for a new Christian, or even a curious non-Christian. Deep enough for someone who has been a Christian for decades. I recommend this book to you. Can't wait to read the sequel: The Jesus You May Not Know.
This truly is a great book on the attributes of God. It is filled with Scripture and with many quotes from people who have been changed by knowing God better.
A very fun, revealing, and interesting read on the various attributes of God. The last chapter is a little different in that he looks at different names of God and then fits them into the twenty third psalm.
The book is a collection of sermons centered around the common theme of knowing God.
I've watched Dr. Jeremiah on television for years. I was slightly disappointed in this book because the sermons that I've heard from him before are better written and organized than this book.
However, Jeremiah packs a LOT of knowledge gleaned from years of study into this one volume. There are a lot of things that will make sense when you are finished.
Warning: If you are new to Christianity, it may be a confusing read since it is steeped in Old Testament Israeli history.
There's definitely enough here to warrant four stars.
I watched and listened to the sermons preached that helped the author write this book and wanted to expand my knowledge of what he was saying. The book is incredible. I learned things from this book I never knew before. I really expanded my knowledge as I wanted to. Dr. David Jeremiah is one of my favorite authors and once again he didn't disappoint. Everyone should read this book.
Many people question the identity of God. I have had people ask me about who is this God we worship. There are people who want to know more about God and He needs to be revealed. I liked how this book tackles this question many people have in their minds. If you are looking to deepen your study about God's character and attributes, this is something you might consider reading.
This book has to be read so that its contents can be digested. I feel that the author is genuine in his devotion and his eagerness to share the truths on each page a wonderful and practical perspective! The word becomes identifiable!
This is a good book written about the attributes of God. It is filled with interesting illustrations and application. It is a good book for the mature Christian as well as the new Christian. It is written in such a way that all believers in Christ will appreciate it.
Interesting read - not the best fit for someone currently finding or struggling with their faith, in my opinion. Left me wanting a bit more understanding, but learned a couple things.
Dr. Jeremiah's words are always convicting. The book brought the wonderful attributes of our Heavenly Father into focus for me and reminded me of just how praiseworthy and awesome He is.
