Duck was grumpy. Her pond had dried up so she had nowhere to paddle and now a grey cloud had appeared overhead. She had no-one to play with so she sought out her friends but she didn’t want to do what they were doing and so the grey cloud grew and grew until it grew so big it covered the whole sky and then it turned black.
Oh no, the cloud was a grumpy duck cloud!
Grumpy Duck is a lovely young children’s book about a duck that is feeling a little grumpy. One by one she visits her friends but she doesn’t want to dig holes with dog or eat clothes with Goat, she wants to paddle. The more people she visits the moodier she becomes.
I love the full-page illustrations that show all the animals perfectly and of course shows duck getting grumpier and grumpier. I was expecting the book to take a different direction than what it did but it still worked perfectly.
The text is kept to a minimum and certain words are emphasised such as the words enormous and ginormous to show what they mean. This is a lovely book and one that hopefully will help a child when they are feeling moody or grumpy too.

The kids enjoyed all the sound effects in this book and I initially enjoyed the story too...but as an adult, on deeper consideration, I became confused. The umbrella message is that our moods can and do affect those around us, either positively or negatively. Duck only becomes happy again when they get what THEY want and the animals all gather to joyously play once again. However, Duck never needed friends to be happy despite it being a repeated phrase of theirs that they "have no one to play with." Duck was a jerk to all these potential playmates that ALL offered their time and friendship to Duck; Duck left them worse than they were simply because they didn't have what Duck wanted. And yet they still celebrate Duck's success in receiving rain for their (Duck's) puddle. It's a 32 page kids book, April, let's not go too deep with this...
No! I don't want my niece/nephews hanging out with kids who continuously tear them down. I don't want them going back for further abuse. Duck doesn't even apologize for being such a grumpy duck to EVERYONE they meet - nature was the enemy here, not the other animals on the farm!
Sigh. Lots of laughs for the noises though.

Ik vind het dus echt stom dat we in mei 2019 het Prentenboek van het jaar 2020 al weten.
Maargoed, het boek. De vorige winnaars van deze prijs vond ik geweldig, dus ik had de verwachting dat ik dit ook een heerlijk boek zou vinden. De voorkant is in elk geval heerlijk!
Maar, ik had een verklarende recensie nodig om de positieve uitleg van het boek te zien. Ja, er hangt een mopperwolkje boven mijn hoofd. Maar ik snapte hem echt niet meteen, en dat vind ik stom. En jammer.
Want het idee is leuk, maar de uitwerking vind ik dus minder. Een 2e ster voor het idee, dus. En dat is het wel een beetje. De illustraties zijn ook wel leuk maar niet bijzonder. Niet mijn favoriet, dus.

Moppereend
Het boekje heeft mijn baby als 'mini (troost) prijs' gewonnen bij een grote winactie van onze bibliotheek.
Super leuk dat er een klein eenden vingerpoppetje bij zat. Het mopper eenden knuffeltje vindt hij erg leuk om vast te houden (en op te sabbelen) kwek kwekkwekkweeeek

"Oma die eend moet niet zo mopperen. Dat is toch niet gezellig! Hij moet gezellig doen hoor!"
Tja tot zover de mening van een drie en twee jarige. Ik vind hem zeer goed en ook een prima kapstok om " niet zo mopperen " aan op te hangen.
Aanrader dus.

An unhappy duck spreads his unhappy mood around the farm and to every animal he meets. By the time he is done the cloud over his head is Ginormous! And it covers the entire sky. Finally it bursts and everyone enjoys the downpour and returns to the activities that make them happy as a rainbow appears overhead.
Wonderful illustrations make for a cute book but the story lacks meaning and resolution. The duck goes about offending all of his friends and does nothing to make the situation that he has created any better. The theme seems to be that if you have a bad day, you should bring everyone around you down until the situation changes, and then everyone can be happy again. It might be better for children to understand that they have a thing called self-control that they can use to change a bad day on occasion or that can at least prevent them from ruining everyone else's day. Great pictures, not so hot story.

First sentence: Duck was feeling grumpy. The pond was dry, so she couldn't paddle in it. She had no one to play with. A little gray cloud appeared over her head.
Premise/plot: Duck is GRUMPY...and she's getting grumpier by the minute. Her friends try time and time and time again to cheer her up, to give her something to do besides feeling upset and/or out of sorts. Can this day be saved?!
My thoughts: I really enjoyed this one. It is always much funnier to read about CRANKY, GRUMPY characters than it is to deal with them in real life. Duck is, in my opinion, relatable. I think readers of all ages will be able to connect with Duck and HER MOOD.

Ik heb vandaag via Youtube dit boek aan de kinderen laten zien. Schitterend hoe stil ze waren. Het verhaal is superleuk. De persoon die voorlas, deed dit super! Tekeningen op het grote smartboard, kwamen volledig tot zijn recht.

Een eendje kan niet in haar vijver spetteren... en wordt knorrig. Oh jee!
Het zijn weer de voorleesdagen en dit boek is het prentenboek van 2020 geworden (het is net 2020, maar ja ach) dus dit boek staat centraal. Ik moet natuurlijk ook het boek dan lezen, al lees ik hem ook omdat het erg grappig klonk. Helaas heb ik geen handtekening kunnen bemachtigen, want de schrijver + illustrator waren erg laat op het evenement en ik moest op tijd naar huis toe. Volgende keer beter!
Een eend heeft een slechte dag. Bah! Ze kan niet spetteren en zwemmen in haar vijver en dus gaat ze langs al haar vriendjes om te kijken of zij haar kunnen helpen. Misschien hebben zij wel een leuke suggestie. Ik vond het erg leuk om te zien wat voor beestjes we zagen en ook wat ze aanboden en hoe dat perfect paste bij wie ze waren (zo wilde het konijntje huppelen en de geit at alle kleding op). Ik vond het ook erg goed gedaan hoe het wolkje steeds meer groeide en van een klein schattig wolkje naar een GROTE boze wolk ging. Ik kon dit gevoel goed snappen. We hebben allemaal wel eens een wolkje boven ons hoofd dat maar niet weg gaat en dat maar groter en groter wordt.
Ik hoop trouwens wel dat het eendje uiteindelijk toch nog ergens sorry zegt tegen haar vriendjes, want ze was best gemeen tegen ze. Ze boden allemaal haar allerlei leuke dingen uit en ze was niet erg lief terug. Ze noemde zelfs eentje een domoor! Ik vind dat kinderen wel moeten zien dat je niet zomaar dit soort dingen kan doen en er mee weg kan komen.
Maar ondanks dat laatste puntje heb ik wel genoten van dit boekje. Wat een mopperkont is die eend zeg, maar ik vond het wel erg grappig dat de wolk DAT deed en ook het einde was best zoet en kleurrijk. ;)
Ik vond de tekeningen simpel, maar wel erg leuk gedaan!
Al met al, zeker een boek waar ik het eens mee ben dat het heeft gewonnen. Het is erg leuk, en zoals ik al zei iedereen kent het gevoel van een mopperdag met een wolk boven je hoofd. Ik zou het ook zeker aanraden~

Antes de nada, quiero decir que esperaba hacer una reseña distinta, con las reacciones de mi primo pequeño de ahora 3 años de edad. Sin embargo, no ha podido ser. Por tanto, daré mi opinión como prima mayor. Y sobretodo, la daré dirigida a personas que tengan contacto con personitas maravillosas de esas edades.
Este cuento, libro corto... Como queráis llamarlo, está destinado a niños de más de 3 años. Es de tapa dura y las hojas son un poquito gruesas, por tanto podrán leer y jugar con él tantas veces como quiera, porque le va a costar de romper. Las hojas están medianamente plastificadas, y son fáciles de pasar de una a otra. Podrá poner los dedos encima tantas veces quiera, sin apenas manchar el libro tampoco, lo cual lo veo una gran opción para niños pequeños que no pueden parar quietos cuando tienen un libro en las manos.
Las ilustraciones son grandes y sencillas. Y sobretodo fáciles de reconocer. Podemos encontrar varios tipos de animales a lo largo del cuento, y cada uno de ellos interactúa con El Pato. Ningún animal tiene un nombre, es decir, el pato se llama Pato, el cerdo; Cerdo... Y así. Como ejemplo de las ilustraciones tenemos la portada del mismo.
A mi modo de ver, es un libro bastante educativo y lleno de valores. Es bastante corto, apenas unas 30 páginas enormes llenas de dibujos. Los valores que te puede inculcar este libro son... La amistad, que no puedes conseguir siempre lo que quieras, y que enfadarte no sirve de mucho más que enfadar a los demás.
En resumen, es un libro que veo muy correcto para niños de corta edad a alos que les guste leer y los animales. Es un gran pasatiempo en el que se pueden entretener y divertirse, entre distintos tipos de animales, reproducir sus sonidos e intentar descifrar lo que le pasa al pequeño pato enfurruñado.

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Duck is in a bad mood because her pond is dried up so she can't play like she wants to. Each of the other animals she encounters offers to play, but Duck turns them all down and in the process spreads her bad mood. Eventually everyone is so grumpy a giant dark rain cloud is hanging over everyone's heads. But when the rain cloud finally breaks and pours down a cheery rain, all the animals find a way to have fun and the grumpy mood is finally gone.
I appreciated the message of this story that one grumpy mood can quickly affect a lot of other people in the negative. However, I would have preferred a different ending that actually required the animals themselves to find a way to be cheerful rather than an outside influence literally changing the situation. Still, this is a fun book that could be used to help kids in their social interactions. I also think I'm just a bit of a sucker for a book starring a duck.

De Nationale Voorleesdagen zijn vandaag van start gegaan en als pedagogisch medewerker op een kinderopvang kon het dus ook niet anders dan dat ik 'Moppereend' eerdaags zou lezen. Helaas word ik zelf niet heel enthousiast van 'Moppereend'.
Spoiler alert want dit volgende stukje verklapt het plot! Eend is chagrijnig omdat zijn vijver is opgedroogd. De andere dieren bieden aan dat ze met hen mee mag mee spelen, maar Eend wilt niets. Haar donderwolk wordt steeds groter, uiteindelijk zo groot dat het begint te regenen. Eend heeft hierdoor haar zin, haar vijver staat weer onder water en ze heeft pret. De andere dieren zijn zijn in tegenstelling tot Eend niet moeilijk en hebben vervolgens ook plezier in de regen.
Ik vind dat er op deze manier weinig van een boodschap in het verhaal zit. Prentenboeken zijn juist zo'n mooie manier om over onderwerpen in gesprek te gaan en dit boek gaat dit volledig uit de weg. Ik ben benieuwd hoe de kinderen de komende week reageren op het verhaal. Uiteindelijk zijn zij de belangrijkste jury.

Grappig kinderboek over chagrijnig zijn en dat jouw emotie anderen kan beïnvloeden. Het boek is enorm leuk om voor te lezen met stemmetjes en emoties. Je kunt het interactief maken, dit spreekt voor de kleintjes erg tot de verbeelding. Ondanks dat het boek over mopperen gaat, is het een opbeurend verhaal en geeft het een glimlach bij het lezen. Maar de boodschap in het boek is wel wat verwarrend. Eend is humeurig en laat zich niet opbeuren door de andere dieren. Sterker nog, door haar gedrag worden de andere dieren ook humeurig. Eend doet niet aardig tegen de andere dieren en wordt pas blij als zij krijgt wat ze wil, dat het gaat regenen. Is dat dan de boodschap die je aan je kind wil meegeven? Dat ze onaardig moeten doen als ze chagrijnig zijn, totdat ze krijgen wat ze willen? Nee, dat vind ik geen goede boodschap...

'Moppereend' van Joyce Dunbar en Petr Horacek gaat over een eend die steeds bozer wordt. Verschillende dieren proberen haar op te vrolijken, maar dat lukt niet. De boosheid wordt vertolkt door een wolk die steeds groter wordt. Uiteindelijk is de wolk zo groot, dat er heel veel regendruppels uit vallen. Eend plenst en plonst in het water. Ze is weer blij en alle dieren met haar.
'Moppereend' is een prentenboek met een moraal. Als iets tegenzit, kun je daar boos om worden en in blijven hangen. Ook kun je er anderen in meenemen, waardoor het voor niemand meer fijn is. Dit kun je oplossen, door iets te doen waar je blij van wordt; daar maak je anderen ook weer blij mee.
Hardcover en prentenboek van het jaar 2020.
'Moppereend' is een prentenboek met een moraal. Als iets tegenzit, kun je daar boos om worden en in blijven hangen. Ook kun je er anderen in meenemen, waardoor het voor niemand meer fijn is. Dit kun je oplossen, door iets te doen waar je blij van wordt; daar maak je anderen ook weer blij mee.

I didn't care for this book so much. The duck was grumpy because she didn't have anyone to play with and she didn't want to do what the other animals were doing. After talking to them all the other animals became grumpy as well. Then they are sitting under a big black cloud. But the proportions of the animals are so off it put me off. The dog was little, the pig next to the dog was bigger, the rooster sitting next to the pig was the same size as the dog, the bunny, next, was half the size of the rooster, the tortoise was teeny tiny and the goat next was huge compared to all the other animals. Eend wordt steeds gaat steeds meer mopperen omdat ze niet kan zwemmen in de opgedroogde vrijver. Steeds wil ze met een ander dier spelen, maar niets past bij haar. Telkens wordt de grijze wolk boven haar hoofd groter. De dieren zijn nu ook niet vrolijk meer. Uiteindelijk is de wolk zo zwaar dat het begint te regenen en komt alles toch nog goed.
Wat een leuk prentenboek over samen spelen, emoties en vriendschap. Veel herhaling maakt het verhaal duidelijk te volgen. De illustraties zijn prachtig gemaakt met o.a. waterverf en krijt. Echt een aanrader ook om het verhaal na te vertellen of te spelen in de klas.

I'm not sure about this one. Duck is so grumpy that there's a cloud hanging over him. Other animals make suggestions of things they enjoy, like Pig suggests rolling in mud, but Duck isn't interested. The cloud gets bigger as the grumpiness spreads. Eventually it gets so big that it breaks and starts raining, which makes all of the animals happy again, including duck.
So, is the message that your grumpiness will go away on its own? That the way to cure your grumpiness is to spread it around?
But there are animals. My kids are happy to flip through and identify the animals and ignore the story.

Het verhaal sprak me aan en de didactische boodschap ook ("als je je slechte bui afreageert op anderen, worden zij ook boos/verdrietig").
Ik was geen fan van de zinsconstructies, maar dat is een kwestie van smaak. Volgens mij had dezelfde boodschap ook met minder woorden per pagina overgedragen kunnen worden.
De pacing en het aantal scènes vond ik wel goed.
Ik las 'm in de winkel, dus ik heb niet intens hard naar de plaatjes gekeken, maar ik vond de illustraties niet wereldveranderend genoeg om het boek te kopen.

Okay, this is by two of my favorite authors, so I was bound to like it, and I think I might even use it at story time.
There is an underlying message about feelings here, but truthfully, unless you drive the message home like the Berenstains, kids are not going to get the symbolism of that cloud overhead.
( And someone being grumpy and inflicting that grumpiness on others is a pretty realistic thing. Maybe it's not good, but it does happen!)

Duck is grumpy. Her pond is dry and she has no one to play with. She approaches her barnyard mates and the each invite her to play with them; but nothing they are doing interests her. The grumpy gray cloud over her head continues to grow until it becomes a thunderous rain cloud. Suddenly the black cloud bursts and it began to pour rain. Duck is ecstatic because her pond will be filled so she can swim.

Zeurende eend die al haar vrienden meesleurt in egoïstisch gedrag en uiteindelijk haar zin krijgt... had het te doen met de andere dieren. Ieder dier deed z’n best om eend op te vrolijken, maar nee, moppereend wil alleen maar negatief zijn en het wordt nog beloond ook.
Waarom kon ze niet een dier met een enorme zon boven het hoofd tegenkomen en daardoor uit haar stemming gehaald worden? Wat is nu de boodschap, blijf zeuren en je krijgt je zin? Gemiste kans.

Grumpy Duck is so relatable because sometimes we all have grumpy gray clouds hanging over our heads. This picture book has a great rhythm, and offers itself to group participation in a story time setting, or even during a one-on-one reading at home. I just love that Duck's mood changes for the better, and that the moods of his friends change right alongside hers. Plus, the pictures are colorful and perfect fun. This one is a win!

Cute, good for conversation about how one person's bad mood can spread to others. But, it left something to be desired because Duck ended up getting exactly what he wanted. If Duck had decided to try doing what the other animals invited him to do, the dark cloud could have gone away and it would have been a more empowering book. Instead, Duck's mood was left to the whim of the weather. He had no agency.

When duck gets into a bad mood, she shares it with all the other animals (who are only trying to cheer her up). Eventually, what started out as a little gray cloud over her head becomes a huge storm of GRUMPINESS, which pours rain down onto them all, and improves everyone's mood. Love the illustrations, but duck is no fun.
