Youngblood #1

Youngblood

Rate this book
Youngblood was an eighteen-year-old computer whiz when his father placed him in hibernation to await a cure for his disease. But when he woke a century later, he was gasping for breath in a deserted underground bunker.

The post-apocalyptic world he found was divided between the valley settlers who lived a subsistence existence and their mountain dwelling overlords who reaped all the benefits of a 22nd Century lifestyle.

Seventeen-year-old orphan, Kira, was a kick-ass huntress who knew how to survive in this environment. So, when Youngblood was attacked by survivalists and left for dead, she saved him and together they raced to unravel humanity's darkest secrets and find a cure.

After such global devastation--one thing was certain--only a man from another century could piece together the truth and discover the power to change the future and save the world.

A wildly inventive adventure full of hairpin twists. A thrilling tale that weaves together fate, courage, and love.

For Fans of The Postman and The Time Machine.

I love words, but that wasn't always true. I grew up with a talent for numbers, leading me to follow a different path. I went to Annapolis and MIT and became a nuclear physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Only after I retired was my desire to tell stories reawakened.

In recent years, I have immersed myself in the world of words, drawing on my scientific knowledge and personal experience to shape my writing.

As a scientist, I explored physics and technology, which enabled me to create informative and insightful books, sharing my knowledge with readers who sought to expand their understanding in these areas—contributing to their intellectual growth while satisfying my own passion.

But it was my time as a naval officer that ignited my imagination and propelled me into science fiction. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy and serving on nuclear submarines during both hot and cold wars, I witnessed firsthand the complexities and challenges of military operations that seamen face daily.

This allowed me a unique perspective, which I channeled into creating Henry Gallant and a 22nd-century world where a space officer fought against invading aliens. Through this narrative, I explored the depths of human resilience, the mysteries of space, and the intricacies of military conflict.

My stories let me share the highlights of my journey with you. I hope you enjoy the ride. (www.hpeteralesso.com)

Youngblood is a well thought out book about a possible future where the apocalypse has already occurred. He is put in a suspended animation unit by his father because he has a disease that can't be cured presently. He wakes in this future and faces the fact life has changed terribly for him. This story is well written and the characters seem to be people the reader can relate with. I can't wait to read the next book ! I won this book in a giveaway from Goodreads and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I received a free Kindle copy in a Goodreads giveaway.
This book mostly suffered from a significant lack of editing. Many typos as well as comma splices and poorly constructed sentences. Early in the book, a 'bolder' rolls off a cliff, narrowly missing the protagonist. Ultimately I thought a bolder boulder would have actually hit him and saved me from reading the rest. I liked the general premise of the story and the characters, but in addition to the typos, felt the writing was amateurish.

The writings of a third grader...

Seriously, this was mostly ramblings and contradictions. I get this level of coherence from 4 year olds. The most coherent thing in this vapid excuse is a description of the ski conditions. A hero with one name “Youngblood” and a villain named “Blackheart”? The author seems to think that anyone who tries to read his drivel needs subtitles for the thinking impaired. Or maybe it’s the author that needs the hint?

Another Post Apocalyptic book!

This one is good though. When society breaks down who is gonna fix it? What would you do if you woke up and you are there?

This novel started out pretty well. The premise (man placed in suspended animation in the hope that a cure for his unnamed disease will be available when he emerges) is well-worn but always makes an interesting tale. Except in this case. By the time I was halfway through I was weary of the many grammatical and other errors. It went downhill from there. The narrative is clumsy, full of clunky phrasing and abruptly introduced scenes with little connection to what preceded them. There are frequent descriptions that do nothing to set the scene or advance the narrative. The characters never really develop. The battle scenes are unrealistic. And if anyone proofread the manuscript, there’s no evidence of it. The text is rife with singular subjects coupled with plural verbs (and vice versa), extra words and missing words, words whose meaning doesn’t fit the way they’re used, and run-on sentences. When I read “gunshots and explosions exploded” about three quarters of the way through, I knew my rating would be one star, and that seems generous.

Youndblood, the main character, wakes up in a hibernation chamber where he is the only survivor. He was supposed to be awoken when the illness was curable, however due to power issues his chamber stopped. Hundreds of years have passed and because of wars technology is non existent in his part of the world. The area is ruled by thugs taxing people and harming and beating and enslaving others. Youngblood and a girl who saved him Kira try to make the world a better place without thugs ruling over them and hurting others. It was an interesting quick read. I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

This book had so much potential. I mean, read the summary! The book was just a scaffolding of a plot that was barely fleshed out. The book seemed to serve simply to propel us from one battle between Youngblood & Jarod, leader of the gangs. I wanted to know more about Youngblood & Kira & Pyro. I wouldn't have even known how long Youngblood had been in stasis or his age without reading the book summary. The book does have a resolution that works fine as a standalone, which is great because I don't see myself reading more in this series.

Just waking up the way this guy did, would be enough to blow your mind. However, there's a lot more going on, like a world that has reverted back to the wild frontier, due to nuclear war and devastation.
The real story is what he does next.
I enjoyed the idea and the way you can reallocate circuit boards in electronic equipment, but it's a story right! Everything always fits together.

Very nice post apocalyptic story, written with strong, likable characters. I think it reads like a young adult book though, moving slowly. I almost lost interest toward the end. Not sure I would continue to read this series, but was an enjoyable book as is.

The first book in a series. The protagonist wakes up in caverns under Yosemite hoping that they have a cure for a sickness he has. But war has left the world with a variety of technologies and he helps people fight bullies who are controlling the town. Lots of violence.

Youngblood is an interesting read. It definitely was not quite what I expected but it was enjoyable and worth reading. It did make me think about what I would do if I was in his situation.

Excellent Story

This is a good, engaging tale. It moves along well until the last when the wrap up is a little confusing to follow.

Amateurish

A decent enough plot but filled with hackneyed phrases, implausibe characters and unlikely situations. Could also do with some serious editing

H. Peter Alesso Had penned one hell of a sci fi novel!!!

I recieved this ARC for an honest review.

This book reminded quite a bit of the TV series 'Firefly', which drew me in even more. Prepare world: this author is the real deal!!!

Youngblood, upon waking from his hibernation chamber, begins his search for other humans who have survived the apocalypse.

Centuries collide as his story unfolds blending space age intelligence with age old challenges. With beautifully constructed characters, they inhabit tons of cool settings from a "the old west" to computer strongholds. This captivating novel left me riveted and on the edge of each page!

I can now say I've found a hero character in youngblood and I'm looking forward for more of his adventures!!!

I had a hard time with this book. After reading the author's bio I had high hopes but, alas, it is what it is. I gave it an extra star because of the genre.

This was not bad... but I thought it was simple. I went back to see if it was listed as "Teen and Young Adult" but all I found was Science Fiction as its genre. There is a lot of the main character, Youngblood thinking out loud his options and choices.

With that quibble, it wasn't bad. I did enjoy the characters and the overall storyline.

Good first book

While this is not a bad tale, I'll admit that I came close to abandoning it. Not so much due to the editorial errors and stilted dialogueb as for the predictablenplot

A HPA. SYFY. Novel/A Sudden Awakening/An Old World Searching for New/ To Many Trying to be Rulers

HPA. has. penned A SYFY. novel, which begins with a young man dOing up from hibernation into a world many years older than when he entered hibernation. What he remembers has little or nothing to do with his current situation. While in hibernation the world has been decimated by nuclear war and when he awakens the new world is just beginning to move into the future. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

Although the plot and characters were pretty good, the writing was a letdown. It was awkward and clearly lacked a good editor, which is a shame because the story itself wasn't bad.
