Wow. Someone recommended this book before a recent trip to Bulgaria. The book recounts the history of how the Bulgarians saved their Jewish population during the Holocaust. I had never heard this part of history before, and was unaware of the fact that Bulgarian Jewry had been spared being sent to the camps and that it had been thanks to the machinations of the king and the intervention of the Church, many politicians and the local populace. Amazing, but also heart wrenching as I thought of how little had been done for Jews in other countries.
