Miss Fortune Universe

Targeted by the Tempest

Rate this book

*** 'Targeted by the Tempest' takes place in Sinful, Louisiana, a charming little town created for the 'Miss Fortune' series by Jana DeLeon.

This story is a flashback of events that happened long before Fortune arrived in Sinful. It explores one particular holiday weekend when our feisty friends from the Sinful Ladies Society were still relatively young women and Walter had high hopes for a romance with Ida Belle.

With Marge vacationing in Seattle, Ida Belle, Gertie, and Walter take a road trip to attend a concert and maybe do some fishing. Mother Nature's fury and an encounter with pure evil combine to make the first week of September 1974 a period of time none of them will ever forget.

There's a couple of pleasantries in this story (reason for 2 ⭐ instead of 1), again I loved the author's take on young Gertie and IdaBelle. I also loved the inclusion of factual occurrences such as Hurricane Carmen, the concert, Toledo Bend and The Rockford Files. I personality felt the inclusion of The Casanova Killer was a little bit in poor taste, he killed 18 people and the story sort of played it down and made him look like he was nothing. I felt that was a tad disrespectful to those that lost their lives. What I hated most of all, and what honestly ruined this story for me was the sobbing, trembling, simpering mess she turned IdaBelle into. For God sakes the woman was a Vietnam Spy and expert marksman. There's absolutely no way she would have first of all let Walter drive in a car chase for Gertie's life, an secondly, she wouldn't have been freaking out at the sight of blood even if it was her best friends. I felt these dramatic deviations from the main characters personality canonization were huge detriments in the storyline and left me unable to enjoy the culmination of what could've been another enjoyable GIB novella. Unfortunately this one missed the mark.

This novella features Gertie, Ida Bella and Walter from the fictional village of Sinful, Louisiana. There is a hurricane moving and they have already made plans to take a driving trip over toward Texas to go fishing. The three of them start out, but then Gertie gets kidnapped and they have to stage a rescue in addition to teasing Ida Bell about her romance with Walter.

The focus s really more on the interaction between the three persons on the trip and now they cope with each other in their inter-personal reaction. Don't worry, Sinful, Louisiana doesn't suffer too much damage and all three of our "heros" suffer with only a few scratches.

I recommend this to anybody who enjoys hinting a New Orleans and the area's culutre with fishing and mystery and interaction all combined in one big package.

Some history of Ida bell ,Walter . Not the best read. Very short and basic. I would not recommend for a friend.
