Flora McAndrews buries her husband on the vast American Plains. She is halfway to an unseen ranch in a land that will one day be known as Colorado. She is the granddaughter of a tenacious sea captain. Calling upon the strength she inherited from him, she decides to go on alone. After much trouble and heartache, she reaches the ranch but questions her judgment when she learns how difficult the work is and how much needs to be done. Chester is a loved and trusted slave, but after the master’s son is shot and killed, his only option is to run. He is captured by the Creeks and taught the “Indian Way.” When he leaves the Creeks, Chester drifts into the mountains and finds Flora’s ranch just in time to save her from the dreaded Bench Brothers. Chester wants to stay on at the ranch and Flora wants him to stay, as well. However, men are coming to settle the country and they will not take it well when they find a black man living with a white woman.
