This is a very well organized cookbook with easy to read, step-by-step instructions. In honor of π day, I decided to make the apple pie. I'm always a bit reluctant when it comes to making pie crusts. Let's face it, they're not the easiest to make. One small mistake and you can end up with a non-edible, tough piecrust.. However, the "Flaky Pie Dough" recipe seemed easy enough so I gave it a shot. My family couldn't stop inhaling the pie.

I like the way the book is laid out with step by step instructions and ingredient tips.
This baking book would be a great edition to any kitchen. I'm onto making the next recipe, "blueberry cobbler in a cast iron skillet".

Cooking is often a pinch of this, a touch of that, but baking is another thing entirely. If you’ve been intimidated by the precision required in baking, fear no more. Eileen Gray, author of Easy Baking From Scratch will help you with quick tutorials, time-saving tips, and a few culinary tricks.

The Essential Guide To Easy Baking is Chapter 1. It will help to achieve the three main requirements for good baking, good recipes, high-quality ingredients, and the right tools.

The chapter starts off with an Essential Equipment List. This covers cookware and bakeware, tools and utensils, and essential ingredients. Each item is explained, with the information about why you need it and what to look for. After the essentials list for each category is a list of easy extras which are nice to have, and a wish list of items that would be nice but are not strictly needed.

Chapter 1 continues with a list of basic alternatives, easy substitutes for common ingredients. The Essentials Checklist: The Bakers Dozen Is a list of 13 techniques to help with your baking success. The chapter is rounded out with a list of emergency baking substitutions, and a brief description of the recipes to follow.

The Recipes

Chapters 2 through 8 are recipes covering:

Muffins & Quick Breads
Cookies & Bars
Cakes, Cupcakes & Frostings
Pies & Tarts
Croissants & Pastries
Yeast Breads
Savory Baked Goods

Each of the recipe chapters begins with a list of the included recipes within and their page numbers. The only photographs in the book of recipes are included with the index at the beginning of the chapter.

Each of the recipe chapters also begins with a quick tutorial. This offers a few tips and an introduction to this group of recipes.

The recipes themselves begin with the yield and a brief introduction of the recipe. Labels, like nut-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, etc. are also included.

Prep time, bake time, and equipment required are the first things mentioned in each recipe. This helps to make sure you have everything you need before you begin baking. The recipe instructions are very straightforward and easy to follow. Many also include a tip, either about the ingredients, a variation suggestion, a make-ahead tip or some other suggestion for the recipe.

The end of the book includes Measurement Conversion tables, a Recipe Index, and Ingredient Index.

A Great Help For The New Baker

While one has to be a little bit more precise when baking then when cooking, I do believe that this cookbook would help any new baker to feel more confident and produce better results. For those of us somewhat familiar with baking, I think there are several time-saving tips and techniques that would come in quite handy.

Do you remember the smell of fresh bread baking or the smell of cookies in the oven when you were a kid? Do you wish you could make delicious cookies and breads? Now you can get that great aroma back with this guide to baking from scratch. Believe or not the recipes are classic and really easy.

This guide is perfect for the novice baker. If you are going to make a habit of baking, there is a section that will help setup your kitchen. Must haves include loaf pans, baking pans, cast iron skillets and even a fluted tart pan. You can’t whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies without measuring cups, spoons, bowls or a mixer. Essential ingredients are shared here; and most would be items you would want to keep in the cupboard all the time. If for some reason you ran out of an ingredient, basic alternatives like almond milk, coconut milk or soy milk can replace an ingredient such as milk or cream for a recipe.

Recipes within these pages are divided into sections such as muffins and quick breads where bakers will find raisin scones, true strawberry shortcakes and Irish soda bread. The cookies and bars section has delectable recipes for espresso toffee chunk cookies, rye and caraway wafers and lemon bars. You can learn to bake perfect cakes, make creamy frostings and even items from other countries like baklava and empanadas. Savory bread recipes are here as well. This handy guide has great tips, tricks, and measurement conversions that will assist any baker in making the best and tastiest treats to share with family and friends.

Step by step instructions that are easy to follow. Seven different categories (Muffins & Quick Breads, Cookies & Bars, Cakes, Cupcakes, & Frostings, Pies & Tarts, Croissants & Pastries, Yeast Breads, Savory Baked Goods) that cover almost everything you could want. Each chapter starts off with a quick tutorial (extremely helpful), an overview, helpful hints, and a few shortcuts. Each recipe includes either a tip. The recipes call for items that are easy to find in grocery stores. A very good list of essential equipment and ingredients that will set up your kitchen for success. Good size book with good format that’s easy to read. Recommend for both the new baker and the experienced baker.

I was able to read this book for free as a prime member. I downloaded to my Kindle. This is the first cookbook I read cover to cover. I am a novice baker and have realized how much I enjoy baking. I picked this book because it isn't just a cookbook with recipes. The author takes the time to explain the different types of dough and batter that will be used throughout the book. Each recipe also offered tips and thoughts as to why they choose the recipe. Most of the recipes are easy. This book is not for the experienced baker. If you want to learn about the how and why or just like to read about sweet treats, this is a good book.

I am a hesitant cook, but I love to bake! The recipes I use the most have simple steps and simple ingredients. I made the Banana Streusel Muffins for my family on Saturday morning and they loved them. The recipe I have made for years for oatmeal cookies was always delicious, but the recipe in this book with maple glaze is even better. I'm looking forward to working my way through these recipes, especially during the holidays.

I love this cookbook! My daughter has been asking me to teach her how to bake, and so I (being an average baker, at best) have been searching for a cookbook that has a little more depth to it... and this is it! The book is well organized, with mini-tutorials prefacing each category section. We are really enjoying baking our way through the book, and are both learning a lot of the 'why' behind baking... for example, why applesauce makes a good substitute for butter. Each recipe has little tidbits of information and helpful tips. There is also recommendations on how to stock your kitchen for success...really a wealth of information. So much more than your average cookbook!
