#1 Wall Street Journal and #1 Amazon bestselling author Melinda Leigh is a fully recovered banker who learned that writing books is way more fun than analyzing financial statements. Melinda’s debut novel, SHE CAN RUN, was nominated for Best First Novel by the International Thriller Writers. Since then, she has garnered numerous writing accolades, including two RITA® Award nominations and an induction into the NJ Romance Writers Hall of Fame. Her novels have sold more than 15 million copies across the world. Melinda loves martial arts, rescue dogs, and sea turtles.
Melinda Leigh has written another winning installment in the final book in Morgan Dane crime thriller, private investigation, and romantic suspense series. Save Your Breath, the sixth book, features Morgan along with private investigators Lance Kruger and Lincoln Sharp racing to find Olivia Cruz who disappeared one night. Sharp and Olivia have been dating for a few months. As they dig into Olivia’s life, they discover a connection between her current book research on two cold cases and one of Morgan’s prospective clients.
Morgan is a former prosecutor who is often underestimated by others. She’s intelligent, generous, compassionate, determined, and loyal. She’s also not easily intimidated and tends to collect strays including two dogs named Snoozer and Rocket as well as people who need a helping hand. While she’s tactful and a terrible liar, she’s also great at fact manipulation.
Lance is an ex-police officer turned private investigator after an on-the-job injury. He’s intense, courageous, and is his mother’s caregiver. His moral code is slightly flexible and his temper can run short with those lacking common sense. He and Morgan are engaged. Sharp is a retired police officer who started his own private investigation firm and hired Lance after Lance retired. After suffering a serious injury on a prior case, Sharp is struggling to get back to full health. His knowledge of criminal behavior is one of his strong points. Readers gain more insight into his thoughts and feelings in this novel.
Set in and around Scarlet Falls in upstate New York, this novel is largely from Morgan’s point of view. Readers get a much better feeling for Sharp in this book. The storyline is engaging, suspenseful, and includes some very intense scenes. The ending is action-packed and full of surprises.
I continue to enjoy the way the author weaves in events of the characters’ personal lives into the story which provides depth to both the storyline and the characters. Themes include greed, love, teamwork, parenting, family drama, found family, secrets, lies, and much more.
Overall, this entertaining and compelling book has twists with great characterization and a tangled plot that was gripping. If you are expecting a solid series that will have mysteries, crime, action, and a little romance, then this is a series that I recommend. I am sorry to see the series is complete, but both personal and professional lives come to a satisfactory conclusion.
I purchased a copy of this novel. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date was September 17, 2019. ----------------------------------------- My 4.67 rounded to 5 stars review is coming soon.
True crime writer Olivia Cruz is mysteriously abducted from her home in the middle of the night. Her disappearance at first goes unnoticed until she misses several appointments and her boyfriend, private investigator Lincoln Sharp, sees the subtle clues she left behind that point to her not leaving her house willingly. With the help of his partner Lance Kruger and attorney Morgan Dane, Sharp explores Olivia’s latest crime subjects for insights into who might have taken her.
Since we were witness to Olivia’s abduction, it was never a question of if but why and by whom. Sharp and team doggedly pursue the two cases she was investigating, as well as the people she was most recently in contact with. They’re led down some dangerous and curious paths, some fruitful and some dead ends. Even though neither Sharp or Lance are currently members of law enforcement, this felt like a police procedural, which I really liked. They also stayed within the lines for a change, (well, with one big exception), making this read more plausibly than some of their past antics.
This is the last book in the series and it was a fitting end as Sharp, Lance and Morgan worked with true precision as a team. I could envision their practice succeeding going forward, professionally and personally as they are now family. Lance & Morgan’s wedding loomed in the background and his acceptance as stepfather to her three girls provided some sweet moments. I’ve enjoyed this series and liked how this one concluded. I’ve listened to all the stories and am glad I chose this format as the narrator is a great storyteller who helped create even more tension and excitement when the story went in that direction. She made for an enjoyable listening experience. I’m sort of sad to see the series end but it feels right.
Save Your Breath was another enjoyable installment in the Morgan Dane series with an intriguing mystery and some great developments for the characters.
Attorney Morgan Dane and her fiancé PI Lance Kruger are hoping to avoid taking on any big cases in the weeks leading up to their wedding, but when their friend, and fellow PI, Lincoln Sharp’s girlfriend goes missing they immediately offer to help. Sharp knows Olivia wouldn’t go willingly and he fears for the worst. As the trio begin to dig into Olivia’s life and work, they discover she was researching two murder cases where she uncovered information with dangerous implications. With time running out to find Olivia alive, and their list of suspects growing by the day, Morgan and Lance are in a race against the clock to catch the person responsible before it’s too late.
The mystery of what happened to Olivia was intriguing as while the book opens with her abduction, we have no information as to who has taken her or why. It was interesting watching Morgan, Lance, and Sharp look for Olivia as they have very little information to go on. While most of the story followed Morgan, Lance, and Sharp, we did get several chapters from Olivia’s point of view while she is being held captive. Those scenes definitely upped the suspense factor as the book went and added a sense of urgency about finding Olivia before it was too late. I thought the way Olivia’s disappearance wrapped up was well done with just the right amount of action and a great showcase of Morgan, Lance, and Sharp’s skills.
The characters in this series are wonderful and they’re one of my favorite things about the series. Morgan is an amazing main character who we’ve seen grow quite a bit from the first book in the series. Her relationship with Lance is fantastic and I love how far they’ve come from their tentative working relationship in the beginning. Morgan’s grandfather once again helps Morgan work through the mountain of paperwork they uncover in this case and I love how much he helps the group out with Morgan trusting his instincts implicitly. Sharp is a lot more on edge in this book but that was understandable given the circumstances. I like how much his and Olivia’s relationship has progressed and the direction it’s heading in.
Overall Save Your Breath was just as fantastic as the rest of the series. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for some great romantic suspense with more of a focus on the suspense.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
I love this book! I love this series! I am so terribly sad that this is the final book in the series!
SAVE YOUR BREATH (Morgan Dane Book 6) by Melinda Leigh is a romantic suspense/PI mystery and this time the focus is on Lincoln Sharp and Olivia Cruz, but the danger still has a way of finding Lance and Morgan.
True-crime writer Olivia Cruz has disappeared. Lincoln and Olivia have been dating for a few months now and he knows the type of criminals she interviews and fears the worst. She attempts to leave a few clues, but she is taped, tied and then drugged. Sharp gets Lance and Morgan to assist in going through her files of her current book looking for clues.
They find Olivia was writing about two cold case murders. The mother of one of the convicted men committed suicide right outside Morgan’s office after Morgan turned her down as a client the same day they find Olivia missing.
The suspects increase as the suspense builds and it is a race against the clock. Will Sharp find Olivia and will she be alive? And has Morgan and Lance’s involvement in the case made them targets of the killer?
I love all the characters in this book and series. I always look forward to each book knowing I can pick it up, reconnect with Morgan, Lance and all the secondary characters and immediately be immersed in a mystery that pulls me into the story and their lives once again. Ms. Leigh knows how to keep you on the edge-of-your-seat and turning the pages. I am very sorry this series is ending, but I know I will be going back to reread them again.
I highly recommend this book and the entire series! All the books have memorable characters and well plotted mysteries. I do recommend they be read in order to follow all the personal connections and changes.
It pains me to do this, but I have to mark this low. I think it's because there were so many red herrings that had nothing to do with the main plot (Olivia is missing) and then the reveal of why this happened was so insane (and not in a good way) I got distracted and just wanted to get to the wedding of Morgan and Lance already. I also wanted to shake Sharp throughout this book, he was irking the life out of me. I wish we had a stronger book to end this series with. Morgan and Lance do pop up in the Bree Target series (where I first read about them) so it's good that we can keep an eye on this couple.
"Save Your Breath" follows Morgan, Lance, and Sharp as they investigate when Olivia goes missing. The threesome realizes that Olivia was investigating two murder cases and that possibly one or both of them may be why she is missing now. This leads them down many different paths while utilizing their usual band of misfits (Lance's mom, Morgan's sister and grandpa).
I feel bad that there was a lot going on in this book and nothing really landed. The only part I laughed at was the Halloween scene with Lance taking the girls shopping and died. I have to say that I love that Sophie who disliked Lance at first is now his biggest fan and loves him.
The plot points were all over and I just don't know. I think at one point I just went okay this makes no sense, let's go for it. But I do think that Leigh has a good handle on writing about the rise of domestic terrorists out there and what this all means. She also does a great job of breaking down laws and other things in Morgan's voice so you can understand them.
The ending was sweet. I hope we get another book following Morgan and company.
In the 6th thriller in this series, Morgan Dane and PI Lance Kruger investigate the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Cruz.
Olivia is a former reporter who now writes true crime books. Her boyfriend is Lincoln Sharp, part of the investigative team. Sharp and the others are sure that she didn't leave her home willingly ... but who would have taken her and why?
As they dig through Olivia’s life, they are shocked to discover a connection between her current book research on two cold murder cases and the suicide of one of Morgan’s prospective clients.
Investigating leads them to multiple suspects. The foursome realize that someone wants this case stopped at all costs .. even the deaths of Morgan and Lance.
As with all the books I've read by this author, this one is well-written with lots of action..a real page turner. Although part of a series, it is easily read as a stand alone. However, if Romantic Suspense is your thing, I highly recommend starting at the beginning. These are all terrific characters, all finely drawn, and involved in exceptionally crafted story lines filled with twists and turns.
Many thanks to the author / Montlake Romance / Netgalley for the digital copy of this Romantic Suspense. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
NOTE: This is the last of this particular series. But for fans of this author and this series ... a new sweries is scheduled to appear in 2020.
When Olivia Cruz vanishes, new boyfriend, Lincoln Sharp, is immediately worried. It is unlike her to not answer her phone and miss appointments. He becomes even more concerned after visiting her house and finding evidence of what he believes is foul play. A former detective himself, he knows that the police won’t be able to do much to help, so Sharp turns to his colleagues, Lance Kruger and Morgan Dane, for help.
Step by step the start putting clues together and it becomes even more obvious that Olivia didn’t disappear of her own accord. The further they get into the investigation, however, the more ominous the connections they find are. Particularly between Olivia’s research on two cold murder cases and the recent suicide of one of Morgan’s potential clients, which does nothing to alleviate Sharp’s growing fear.
As the investigation grows, it becomes evident that this case will be a tricky one, requiring all of their expertise. One by one, the suspect pool gets longer and Sharp becomes more and more certain that Olivia is in grave danger. He knows that with every day she remains missing, the chance of her not surviving grows. As the threesome get closer to the truth, it becomes clear that whoever is behind the kidnapping does not want to be found and will do absolutely anything to stop them…including murder. Will they be able to survive long enough to find Olivia? And will she even still be alive when they do?
There’s one thing that can be expected from any Melinda Leigh novel: a perfect escape filled with plenty of suspense and just a dash of romance. And Save Your Breath is no different. While it wasn’t my favorite of the Morgan Dane series, the well-crafted, fast-paced read kept me riveted. It even ended with a bit of “happily ever after” and several touching scenes. And, even though I would prefer a tad more focus on the twists, turns, and climax towards the end, I can acknowledge that the conclusion did a marvelous job at making my heart swell and my face smile. Never a bad feeling to be left with when reaching the last page.
Perhaps my favorite thing about this book were the chapters narrated by Olivia where the tension was palpable. Don’t fret, however, nearly all of the rest has gradually building suspense that led to one suspenseful climax. Okay, maybe it was just a pinch over-the-top and overly dramatic, but it didn’t really tarnish my enjoyment of either the scene or the book as a whole, so it’s all good in my opinion.
Among the intense, gripping moments, we were treated to a ring-side seat as the feelings between Sharp and Olivia continue to grow. One aspect I wasn’t thrilled with, however, was who the murderer was. I can’t say much, but the circumstances felt as if they came out of nowhere without a significant build-up that would have made it make more sense. You’ll see what I mean when you read this book (because I definitely recommend this entire series).
As I mulled over my thoughts on Save Your Breath before writing this review, I kept coming back to the fact that Melinda Leigh is truly talented at crafting compelling, uncomplicated, enjoyable books. I marveled at how natural one event led into the next, which left me reeling by the climax. Perhaps this one got a little too close to having melodramatic moments, but overall, Leigh can deliver one mean plot that keeps you guessing, filled with heaps of possible suspects and more than a few red herrings. Like I said already, this series is one I strongly recommend. And you definitely won’t regret picking this one up! Rating of 4.5 stars.

Wonderful mystery with a great plot that doesn't give up its' secrets until the action packed ending. I have always loved Melinda Leigh and her books are consistently top notch. I don't know if the Morgan Dane Series is going to continue, but I hope it will. I love the Dane family and how they have opened their hearts and home to others. The depiction of the kids is spot on and so funny.
Attorney Morgan Dane and PI Lance Kruger are two weeks away from their wedding. Lots to do and now they have a missing friend to find. Lincoln Sharp is the owner of Sharp Investigations and Lance's partner. He has been dating a true-crime writer, Olivia Cruz. They are an older couple, both with bad relationships in their past, so the are taking this slow. When Olivia goes missing without a trace, Sharp is positive that this is a kidnapping and he is scared.
Olivia keeps her current book research carefully quiet, but she is having a dilemma and needs some advice from Morgan, Lance and Sharp. When she disappears, her research is the only clue they have to start with. As they investigate they find some very troubling matters that Olivia uncovered in her research. The more they look, the more suspects they uncover. Time is running out for Olivia and someone is determined to prevent Morgan, Lance and Sharp from finding her.
I am loving the Morgan Dane series, and was so happy to have another one of the books to read. In this one, Morgan and her fiancé, Lance Kruger, become involved in trying to find true crime writer Olivia Cruz when she disappears. Olivia's boyfriend, Lincoln Sharp, is Lance's boss, and a central figure to the series.
As Lance, Morgan, and Lincoln race against time to find Olivia, they realize that the book she is working on has ties to two cold murder cases, as well as the recent suicide of one of Morgan's clients. They must find Olivia before it is too late.
The aspect that stands out for me in this, as well as the other books in the series, is the wonderful characters. I always enjoy reading about Morgan and Lance, but the widowed Morgan's three small daughters add so much dimension to the books, as well as her retired law enforcement grandfather, who helps look after Morgan, her home, and her girls. A young, health compromised nanny also lives with the family, and is an asset to the books. It is always good to see secondary characters Lincoln Sharp and Olivia Cruz turn up, and I enjoyed having them at the forefront of this book. I really enjoy the way the characters team up and work together to solve crimes.
I voluntarily read and reviews an Advanced Reader Copy.
Save your breathe is the 6th installment of Morgan Dane series. While each of these books can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the series in order to have the full experience. The mysteries are new with each book, but the personal lives of the characters continues from one book to the next.
Morgan is a young widower with three small girls. She returned to Scarlett Falls after he husband died in the military. She moved in with her retired police grandfather and they lend each other support.
Lance is a cop turned Private investigator. When he was a child, his father disappeared. Lincoln was the cop who attempted to solve that case and took Lance under his wing. When he retired, Lance came to work with him as a PI. Morgan is a lawyer who also works at their firm. Over time, she and Lance fell in love and are engaged.
In the past, Lincoln has worked with an investigative reporter named Olivia. Neither like to let anyone in, but they slowly broke down each other’s walls.
Olivia has signed with an agent to do a true crime book based on a couple of cases she is researching. She has concerns that the men in jail man be innocent of the crimes they were arrested for. She wants to discuss the case with Lincoln. But before she can, someone kidnaps her from her bed in the middle of the night. With very little to go on, can Lincoln, Lance, and Morgan find Olivia before it’s too late?
I really enjoy this series and try to read them as soon as they come out. The characters are smart, resourceful, and human. The writing seems to be well researched and is easy to follow. And for those who like their stories clean, they don’t have much more then a couple bedroom innuendos and they aren’t too gory.
Thanks Netgalley, Melinda Leigh, and Montlake for this book.
In this final installment of the series, Morgan Dane and her colleagues look into the disappearance of true-crime writer Olivia Cruz. The investigation soon reveals connections to two cold cases, but why would someone want Olivia gone?
While this book is a significant improvement on the previous one and is a satisfying read overall, there are still some issues with Leigh's writing style. In this particular case, the resolution lacks foundation, and there is absolutely no foreshadowing to indicate the twist at the end. It is very irritating when the villain
Moreover, the police procedural elements are also weak and demonstrate insufficient research on Leigh's part. Although this isn't too bad considering the fact that Morgan, Lance, and Sharp are not law enforcement, it still detracts from the overall story.
Despite these problems, the plot and characters are appealing. There are some truly intense and suspensful moments from Olivia's perspective, and the scenes focusing on Lance's interactions with Morgan's young daughters are delightful.
In sum, this is a worthwhile series, and my buddy read with the 2-3-4 Challenge Group led to some wonderful discussions.
Save Your Breath is the sixth and final book in Melinda Leigh’s series of suspense novels featuring defence attorney Morgan Dane, who – together with her three young daughters - moved back to her home town of Scarlet Falls following the death of her husband on active service. Over the course of the series, Morgan has found love again with Lance Kruger, her former high-school sweetheart, and the couple are planning their wedding, which is due to take place in just a few weeks’ time.
Lance was a police officer and now works as a PI for the firm run by his former colleague and mentor, Lincoln Sharp; Morgan works from an office in the same building and the three are very close and have successfully worked a number of cases together. Their latest case, however, is one that hits very close to home for Sharp when the woman he’s been dating for the past six months or so, investigative reporter Olivia Cruz, goes missing after having arranged to meet with the three of them the next day to discuss something she’s been working on.
With no other clues or information to go on, Sharp, Lance and Morgan start digging to see if they can tie Olivia’s disappearance to any of her current research projects. They learn that she’s late with a book proposal to her editor, and find a couple of avenues of investigations to pursue, both of which appear to be related to cases of possibly wrongful conviction and imprisonment – and one of them is coincidentally connected to a meeting Morgan took just that morning. But of course nothing is ever simple, and the plot takes several unexpected and cleverly executed twists and turns before all is revealed.
Save Your Breath is a suspenseful and enjoyable read in which the author steadily builds the tension as Sharp, Lance and Morgan race against time to find Olivia, while never losing sight of the fact that these are people with complicated lives and complex emotions. Sharp has always been something of a steading presence in the other novels in the series – even a bit of a control freak; calm and unflappable, he’s a solid, dependable presence, but here, it’s almost painful to witness him as he starts to unravel. At fifty-three, he’s been single for some time, and as both he and Olivia have been burned by past romantic relationships, they’ve been content to take things slowly. But as Sharpe struggles to keep it together and remain positive about finding her, he realises he can’t imagine life without her.
As always, one of the most enjoyable elements of these books is provided by the characters and the relationships between them. Morgan and Lance are a solid couple who love and support each other unconditionally, and I applaud the author for showing that parenting three children aged seven and under is no picnic and how both of them put their family first. (The scene where Lance takes the girls shopping for Halloween costumes is cuteness overload!)
I did have a few small problems with the novel overall. I was pleased when I learned it would focus on a story for Sharp and Olivia, who have been striking sparks off each other since Olivia first appeared in an earlier book in the series – so I was a bit disappointed to discover that they’ve been dating for several months by the time this story takes place. I’d hoped for a little more romantic development, maybe them working alongside each other for a while before the kidnap occurred – and I have to say that the final reveal as to who was behind it and why had me scratching my head a little. Not because it didn’t make sense, but because it was a bit of an anti-climax after everything Olivia had gone through.
Those niggles apart, Save Your Breath is a fast-paced page-turner featuring a clever mystery and a group of engaging, multi-faceted characters I’ve grown fond of. It’s a fitting finale to what’s been a solidly entertaining series and fans are bound to enjoy it.
Journalist Olivia Cruz has disappeared without a trace. Her boyfriend, Private Investigator Lincoln Sharp, received a call from Olivia's mother saying that Olivia never showed for a scheduled appointment. Lincoln and his partner, Lance Kruger, decide to check on Olivia. They find a bed with the covers torn off, a broken fingernail, and a streak of blood on the doorway. In the garage they found a pair of earrings scattered on the floor. Lincoln and Lance, along with Lance's fiancée Morgan Dane, try to trace Olivia's last few hours. She was working on a book proposal involving two recent murder cases. Did she find something in her research that could have changed the outcome of those cases?
The final book in the Morgan Dane series is another winner. With little to go on, Morgan digs into two separate murder cases where the convicted murder is claiming innocence. Olivia's notes show that evidence in one of the cases was mishandled which could lead to an overturned conviction. Did someone want to stop that from happening?
This case was fast moving. It had several red herrings and a few surprises. Morgan and Lance's advancing relationship was a nice way to close out this series. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
I might be a tad obsessed with this series. I read the print version, but I couldn't help snagging the audio as well. I first fell in love with this series on audio and the way Cris Dukehart voices all my favorite characters and the story.
Save Your Breath is the sixth of the Morgan Dane series which work best read in order so the character and relationship development that anchor the stories makes sense even as each mystery is a standalone.
In the latest, we finally get to see that sizzling attraction between Lance's private investigation business boss and mentor, Lincoln Sharp, and the clever and competent investigative journalist, Olivia Cruz, take the limelight. Unfortunately, this is achieved by Olivia being kidnapped just before she can release her latest story that has her bothered.
Lincoln is beside himself at her disappearance and is joined by Morgan and Lance to get on the trail of facts that leaves them all cold with fear for Olivia's life.
I enjoy how this author can ratchet up the suspense and make each case feel desperate and dark even while inserting into the mad race to save someone the every day love and life of her characters. And, beyond that, I love that all the characters on the investigation team are smart about how they do things. Morgan is a defense attorney, but she has training with weapons and self-defense because she comes from a family of cops. She isn't stupid about proving herself and racing off into danger which helps Lance treat her like a true equal partner on their cases.
This one kept me wondering as to who was behind it all and why. I knew better than to leap to the obvious solution because the author is great about twisting things. It was a shock to me who was behind it, but, of course, the clues were there.
Cris Dukehart was stellar as usual. She takes an already strong story and enhances it so it becomes an even better experience with the book. She has a good husky voice for the men and doesn't go too feminine on these tough women like Olivia, Morgan, and Morgan's sister. Love her work.
So, my listening experience with the Morgan Dane world was fab as usual and I'm always disappointed when the end comes, but that very end was just the thing to leave me smiling.
My thanks to Brilliance Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.
“Save Your Breath” is a 6th book in Morgan Dane series, a romantic PI mystery/suspense read. And once again I am happy to report that this series is still one of my favorites in this genre! Melinda Leigh has a way of captivating her audience with new cases and keeps the reader on the edge and fully engaged till last pages. Morgan and Lance are one of my favorite fictional couples, and their romantic and professional relationship is one that will stay with me for a while. I have to say that I am quite upset that this is the last book in the series, and I will definitely miss all the characters.
Thank you NetGalley, Montlake Romance publisher, and the author for providing me with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Review copy was received from Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Every time there is a new book in the Morgan Dane series , I can't get it fast enough. They are on Kindle Unlimited, with the audio version also. Kidnapping is a common theme in the stories I am reading these days. Sharp, Morgan, and Lance are a great team with excellent backgrounds for their work. They both provide and have an amazing support system in family and friends.
Olivia is just becoming part of their circle and disappears. The team believes she has been kidnapped (they are right) and set to work to find her. Save Your Breath has a suspenseful mystery with the search and plenty of personal developments as well. With Olivia's true crime work, there are many possibilities for people who might want to hurt her. The team has to deal with plenty of bad guys who don't really want to talk to them.
They are just before Morgan and Lance's wedding. Gianna is having health issues and needs a kidney even more urgently. Sharp has just started to get comfortable with his relationship with Olivia. We see quite a bit of Morgan's sister, Stella this time. I really enjoy these stories so much! I am not sure if there is more; I hope so. In the meantime, I can go back for the earlier Scarlett Falls series, set in this world.
Narration: Cris Dukehart does a great job with this series. I am comfortable with all her voices for both male and females. She does have distinct ones for the different characters. I was able to enjoy the performance at 1.5x speed.
Melinda Leigh returns with one of the tightest, most cohesive crime-busting, lawyer-PI team in the Morgan Dane series—I can’t seem to get enough of Morgan Dane and Lance Kruger—and ‘Save Your Breath’ is yet another great instalment in this fantastic lineup.
I think I’ve said this in every review of the series, but written from a romance review’s perspective, I’ll need to say it again: the romance is slight and brought off-screen, given the established pairings, with slight touches and kisses and reaffirming words forming the basis of affection here. Lance and Morgan are grounded in each other and it’s always a joy to read about their mature relationship and how they get on in each new book, so ‘Save Your Breath’ furthers their relationship just a little more and probably gives them the short but needed HEA all of their stalwart fans want.
As much as I was hoping for a sharper focus on Lincoln Sharp’s and Olivia Wade’s romance developing along side Morgan/Lance’s rock-solid one, ‘Save Your Breath’ wastes no time in moving past their attraction, straight onto the meat of the story of Olivia’s disappearance and several seemingly unlinked cases.
There’s no doubt that Leigh always crafts a good suspense; this far into the series, the pacing, tone and characters are nuanced and pitch-perfect, though a mite bit predictable plot-wise, or even a bit of a let down when all’s revealed and tied up.
Still, it's a smooth read otherwise, engaging and compelling and if this is really Leigh’s last in this series, I’ll be saying a very, very wistful goodbye.
I'm a fan of this series. I like the key characters and enjoy reading about them. If you follow the series you know their background and you understand their nuances and development a lot more than if you jump in mid series. Through the series Lance and Morgan have had a slow burn romance that turned into a permanent commitment. The romance elements are low level. Although this series falls into romantic suspense, I would say it's more mystery than romance. Which is what I prefer and why the series has become a favorite.
This series has a stand alone mystery in each book which I really appreciate. I don't enjoy serial series where you never know how many books you have to read to get all the plot lines completed.
In this one the reporter turned true crime writer that is dating Sharp gets kidnapped. It puts Sharp front and center in the plot and he becomes less perfect, more human and very likable in his desire to find her. I got pulled into the plot and enjoyed the mystery. A fast fun read.
Thanks to author for providing this copy through Netgalley
New author to me and I enjoyed a lot!! Romantic suspense, thriller, a lot of twists, till the end I really didn't have any idea who the bad people are! Sometimes it was a bit too technical language: some laws, expressions... But liked it anyway a lot. No sex scenes
I probably shouldn't let this surprise me so far into this series, but it still blows my mind how enthralled I get when I read these books. As a reader, I'm so vested in the characters, the case, and the suspension that is teased out just right that I barely notice the pages flying past, time going by, or real life around me. I was so jazzed when I saw this was going to focus on Lincoln and Olivia, but wow, it really floored me how the author brought out their story in much the same sort of trial by fire romance that she put Morgan and Lance through.
Save Your Breath is the sixth in the sensational Morgan Dane romantic suspense series. The mysteries tend to be standalone, but the surrounding story and characters is ongoing and works best read in order. In addition, the Morgan Dane series is a follow up to the Scarlett Falls trilogy.
Morgan and Lance think they'll be up to their eyeballs in Halloween with the girls and wedding preparations. Never in their worst nightmare would they think they would be working against the clock along side a distraught Lincoln Sharp to solve the kidnapping of Olivia Cruz, Sharp's girlfriend and a brilliant investigative journalist/true crime author. They hunt high and low through her life and her research notes to find the one thread that when tugged will lead them to Olivia. Meanwhile, they know the odds on a retrieving a live kidnapped victim after time passes. With the assistance of Morgan's sister Stella, grandpa, and Lance's mother, they won't give up.
As I said, I love how the author takes me completely into her book when I'm reading these. My emotions are engaged with her characters and the situations. The case is dark and a little gritty. The early evidence wasn't much and then they had a white board full of motives and suspects. Poor Sharp got put through the wringer and Lance and Morgan had to be his pillars through it all. I liked that the author really did her homework on the justice system, legalities, police procedures, kidnapping crime, and even a bit on domestic abuse and militia.
Oddly, I went right for the right suspect from the moment they were introduced. I had no reason to, but I kept holding to that person no matter what came up later nor could I say why they were the culprit. But, there was more to it, of course, and I appreciated getting the big end scene and reveal.
And, yes fans of Morgan and Lance, we got a few tender scenes. One with Lance and the girls totally made me swoon big.
Now, I am left with a sad face because I must wait for my next Morgan Dane series fix. I can't recommend this series enough in print or audio.
My thanks to Montlake Romance via Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The case is personal in Save Your Breath as Olivia Cruz, Lincoln Sharp's girlfriend, goes missing. Morgan and Carl help their friend try and track Olivia down, but the more they discover the longer she is missing, they must face the possibility that they aren't going to find her. At least not alive.
Although I am not a seasonal reader, I do enjoy curling up with a good mystery or thriller, and it always feels more satisfying when I do this on a rainy day. It fits the atmosphere. Although, this book has plenty of atmosphere, even without the helping hand of mother nature. It was a tense and exciting read from the very first page to the last.
What I really enjoy about the Morgan Dane series is that it is a great mixture of enthralling mystery, romance and the everyday life of a busy family. With each book you delve more and more into the life of Morgan, Carl and Sharp, as well as the people surrounding them, and love them that little bit more each time. This is why this booked worked so well. Sharp is one of my favourite characters in this series and we finally see him find a little romantic happiness and then see the devastation when Olivia disappears. Needless to say, I was heavily invested and couldn't put this down until I knew how it ended.
If you haven't read this series, you definitely need to give it a try. Not only does each book have a great mystery to unravel, but there's also a load of romance, friendship and family mixed in. I can't wait to read the next book!

Okay, it’s official. If one is in the mood for a tightly written, edge-of-your-seat thriller that also incorporates a wonderful dose of humanity and love, Ms.Leigh is the one to pick up. Every.Single.Time!!
I absolutely LOVE how she incorporates real life with all it’s tender, trying, frustrating and loving moments into a state of the art thriller. Morgan and Lance’s love is strong and secure. It is an absolute delight to watch them juggle their personal lives with children while balancing their high stress occupations. This time it is Lance being initiated into Halloween costume buying with three small girls, Morgan making sure she makes breakfast and gets the kids off to school and a myriad of other everyday but very endearing and sweet moments juxtaposed against the anxiety of finding a friend, who has been kidnapped, before it is too late.
I also love how this author can so realistically portray what really happens in an investigation - no matter how stressful or serious. The reader walks through every frustrating possibility and every exhausting dead-end right along with the characters as they chase a myriad of leads, strike out countless times and narrow down the possibilities. And, Ms. Leigh juggles all those threads masterfully!
My only complaints (and they are small) is the weird choice of villain and the even weirder climax because of it. And, my extreme disappointment with the results in Sharp’s and Olivia’s relationship. Throughout the entire story both regretted taking things so slow and not speaking up with their feelings only to revert rather than progress once things calmed down.
Everything else was pure endearing, engaging, excitement and heart-pounding fun!
I really enjoy the Morgan Dane books, but be warned; this is not the place to jump into the series. Start at the beginning and read through, because by the time you get to this book, the sixth in the series, the principal characters will start to feel like friends and you’ll be much more invested in the story here when Lincoln Sharpe’s girlfriend Olivia is kidnapped at the very beginning of the book.
Morgan and her two partners in their PI business, Lincoln and Morgan’s partner Lance, spend most of the book chasing red herrings trying to find Olivia. Persistence and good old-fashioned detective work eventually pay off, however, and there’s a dramatic confrontation to rescue Olivia and save her life. I have to say the reason she was kidnapped was totally a new one on me and, as a writer myself, made me laugh, but it’s true that publishing can be as cutthroat a business as any other and with a big contract at stake, the motive was certainly established.
Long-term readers of the series who are invested in Morgan and Lance as a couple will find the ending of this one very satisfying. I’m not sure if it’s the case, but this does read rather as though the series is ending here, and if it does I’d say it’s a pretty good spot to close it out. I very much enjoyed the read, and the series overall. I give it five stars, but with the proviso that this isn’t a standalone and I don’t think you’ll enjoy it all that much if you haven’t read the rest of the series.
