About the author
Wilhelm Hauff
949 books53 followersWilhelm Hauff was a German poet and novelist best known for his fairy tales.
Educated at the University of Tübingen, Hauff worked as a tutor and in 1827 became editor of J.F. Cotta’s newspaper Morgenblatt. Hauff had a narrative and inventive gift and sense of form; he wrote with ease, combining narrative themes of others with his own. His work shows a pleasant, often spirited, wit. There is a strong influence of E.T.A. Hoffmann in his fantasy Mitteilungen aus den Memoiren des Satans (1826–27; “Pronouncements from the Memoirs of Satan”). Hauff’s Lichtenstein (1826), a historical novel of 16th-century Württemberg, was one of the first imitations of Sir Walter Scott. He is also known for a number of fairy tales that were published in his Märchenalmanach auf das Jahr 1826 and had lasting popularity. Similar volumes followed in 1827 and 1828. His novellas, which were collected posthumously in Novellen, 3 vol. (1828), include Jud Süss (The Jew Suss; serialized 1827).

More stories (or, to be precise, artistic fairy tales - that is, fairy tales that don't come from popular oral tradition but were written as fairy tales, c.f. the fairy tales of H.C. Andersen) from the same author as the previous one. "The Cold Heart" is very famous, and justly so. In spite of a few plot inconsistencies, it's a great tale, both riveting and moving. In addition to that one, the book contains "Caliph Stork" and "Ship of Ghosts", another two famous stories by the same author. These are charming and entertaining. Gave it a star more than the one I read before on account of the strength of the first fairy tale.

Was allerdings nichts an ihrer Wahrhaftigkeit ändert.

I liked this Fairy Tale. Once again I would love to read a retelling of it. It is a Tale of warning about contentment and "the grass is greener." It also warns you about turning your heart to stone or "A Cold Heart." I enjoyed it a lot! I am glad the book I grabbed for the Nutcracker story had other German Fairy Tales as well.

One of the most striking impressions from my childhood, this dark, atmospheric, immersive tale about powers of good and evil of Schwarzwald.
