The doctor is back with a whole book of sessions from guests like Jon Hamm, Louie Anderson, Susie Essman, Gilbert Gottfried, David Mamet, Wanda Sykes, Marc Maron, Reggie Watts and a slew of others. Based on the Emmy and Peabody Award winning Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, the show reunites star/creator Jonathan Katz with H. Jon Benjamin (as his son Ben) and Laura Silverman (as receptionist Laura). We also meet a new cast of recurring characters played by Laura Kightlinger, Erica Rhodes, Dom Irrera and Rick Overton.
Jonathan Paul Katz is an American comedian, actor, and voice actor best known for his starring role in the animated sitcom Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist as Dr. Katz. He also is known for voicing Erik Robbins in the UPN/Adult Swim series Home Movies. He produces a podcast titled Hey, We're Back and can be heard on Explosion Bus
Even without the Squigglevision, fans of the old Dr Katz show will love this audiobook. Great standup comedy acts, albeit in therapist format. David Cross, Gilbert Gottfried, Colin Quinn, Susie Essman, Reggie Watts, Rachel Dratch, Wanda Sykes, Marc Maron, and so many other legendary names. And of course the legendary H. Jon Benjamin in his original role that made him that slacker voice we all love so.
It really works well as an audio medium, and the only flaw is that one is left wanting more. The episodes are short and over before you know it.
I certainly hope they make more. They should have a new edition/season every year, no reason not to...
This Audible original extends the world of the 90s cartoon, Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist. Comedian Jonathan Katz plays a therapist who exclusively treats comics, and this fact allows the patients to fill their sessions with their standup which, hopefully, gives the audience a few laughs.
My husband and I are huge fans of the show (he watched it regularly back in the day and introduced me to the show in more recent years), so we both had great fun listening to it. It is a little uneven, but the pleasure of hearing these familiar voices again more than made up for it.
My husband and I chatted about this audiobook over on Booktube!
My brother and I always laughed at the Comedy Central commercials for this show, but we never watched it, for some reason. So after reading this, I found copies of all the old episodes online and dove in.
Lots of great bits. I love the premise that Katz creates with his character. Giving comedians a slightly different vehicle to tell their jokes in a narrative fashion without sacrificing too much to a story like a normal show. It's extraordinarily brilliant and simple.
My favorites were Jen Kirkman and Colin Quinn, I think, but all of the guests were good. Laura Silverman and H Jon Benjamin were fantastic, and whoever played Katz's shrink was hilarious as well.
The live sessions were actually less entertaining than I thought they'd be. That might just be having not been there in the moment, as it was meant to be experienced.
It's gotten me hooked on the original show, so I guess it's done its job!
Should probably have been three stars given the number of "sessions" that kind of fell flat, but I was so happy to discover the return of "Dr. Katz" that I'm willing to cut him some slack. Besides, most were plenty funny, and some were side-splitting: A session in front of a live audience featuring Al Madrigal, Jon Hamm, Jenny Slate and Paul F. Tompkins was gold. (Unfortunately it was followed by another live segment that closes things off mostly with a thud — apologies to the late Fred Willard.) Surprising how some of these guests seemed to have shown up for actual therapy rather than coming with material prepared, but you can always fast forward through the lesser sessions. And the banter between Dr. Katz and his receptionist Laura is always perfect.
This audiobook is a perfect fit for the Dr. Katz style of comedy — laid back, but also tightly written. Longtime fans of the original show will appreciate how it captures the same humor and format, just without the animation. The guest comedians are consistently funny and witty, with Demetri Martin standing out as a real scene-stealer. Each chapter works best when enjoyed in one sitting, making it easy to slip into that familiar therapeutic rhythm. Overall, it feels like rediscovering the old cartoon in audio form, and it works wonderfully.
First hour? Funny. But then there’s a second, and a third, and oy jeez! by HOUR FIVE I WAS SCREAMING… and still an hour and a half to go… My Full Review →
Hilarious! I love this guy. Jonathan Katz combines subtle intuition into human nature with unabashed revelations about human cruelty, jadedness and humor. Supporting characters are also hilarious.
