Defeat an evil necromancer. Save the school. Get the girl.
As if senior year wasn’t already complicated enough! I just wanted to keep my head down, hang out with friends, prep for college, and worship Stacy Thompson from afar. Was that too much to ask?
I guess, because I got distracted by Stacy heading to cheer practice in a pair of impossibly tight shorts and stepped in front of a bus. That’s right. I died on the first day of school.
Oops.
Dying wasn’t the bad part. Not really. I’d died before, and I always bounced back. Call it a perk of being a reaper’s daughter. Only with this death I learned the terrible awesome truth: I keep bouncing back because I’m destined to become a reaper just like dear old dad!
That’s right. Me. A reaper. Complete with black robes and a scythe. The whole shebang. Yeah, right!
I figured with enough time I could avoid my fate. Only fate came looking for me when I followed Stacy, and her impossibly tight shorts, up to the infamous Thompson mansion. A haunted mansion that was once the haunt of an evil necromancer who sent his fair share of people to the other side, and was now a favorite makeout spot for teens with more hormones than sense.
Go to a makeout spot with Stacy? Yes please. Even if we were going with a group of friends. Even if the whole almost-date was ruined by a necromancer who should totally be long dead showing up, killing my friends, stealing their souls, and enslaving their bodies into his undead army!
Now I’m stuck with a ghost cheerleader who spends half her time acting like she’s interested in yours truly and half her time demanding I get her body back. Talk about confusing. Meanwhile I have to hide her existence from dear old dad so he doesn’t drag her to the other side, all while trying to figure out how to defeat an evil necromancer before he unleashes his undead minions on the world!
Call me the Gwen Reaper, because it’s time to kick some necromancer butt and save the girl!
A Date With Death is a lesbian paranormal thriller with a dose of humor and romance! From the author of Villains Don't Date Heroes!
This seriously needs a rewrite and an edit. There is an interesting story underneath the waffle, the repetitions, and overused phrases. This could be half the length simply by tightening the prose. An interesting point is made; and then made again, and again, and again.
Maybe I'm being impatient with books lately but although I managed to finish this one, I kept on getting annoyed at it. It had its good points--I liked all the reaper stuff and I liked Gwen and Stacy's relationship (...oh my God it only JUST hit me that their names are a Spider-man reference). But I'm not so into YA lately, and this one just leans so heavily on stereotypes of nerds and cheerleaders etc, plus there are so many jokes I just didn't find funny (fat jokes, Star Wars references, etc). So. Didn't really work for me.
Its a typical Mia Archer story - it;s cute and fun to read but has some annoying repeatative phrases in it that I start to overlook after a while. I enjoyed the book but it wont become one of my favorites.
A fun urban fantasy with a healthy dose of geek culture
This is a story, about Gwen, the daughter of a Reaper, who discovers that her tendency to suffer accidental death on the regular, and not be any worse for the wear, is more than just dear old dad taking advantage of job perks, and Stacy, the "IT" girl at her high school (you know the one, who everybody either wants to be or be with) and the trouble they get into when they go with a group of friends to explore the town's most notorious haunted house. The problem is that Gwen knows it really IS haunted... Yeah... So things get a bit... Complicated....
Set in the same world, but different city, as the "Villain" series with Night Terror and Fialux, this fun story packs in a wonderful combination of geeky humor, fantasy action, suspenseful light horror, and a sweet budding romance between Gwen Reaper and her cheerleader dream girl.
The supporting cast, from the trio of dorky teens who've been haunting the high school since the early 1980s, to Gwen's dad, to Death himself, are well written and add to the story tremendously.
It's a wonderful story, with the potential to be the beginning of a new series. Highly recommended!
I received an advanced copy of this book and liked it so much I bought a copy when it came out!
Neat premise with supernatural hijinks mixed with high school shenanigans. While an okay read, the flow of the story wanders far too much for my liking to keep engaged with what could happen next. Felt like quitting the book too many times, and while I did finish, the experience was more slugging up a steep hill rather than enjoying a good book. A solid two stars but earns the extra due to the supernatural aspects.
This is a well written lesbian scifi book featuring Stacy, the head cheerleader, the Gwen, the weird zombie girl who sees ghosts. The characters are well developed and the storyline has plenty of action and twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. A good book for your must read list.
Playful, fun, lampshade-y, and over the top. The characters are bright and likeable, the world building is tight, and I certainly hope there is more to read about this pair.
I got into Ms Archer's books with the villain series. I quickly fell in love with them. Now this book comes along and I want more. It was fun and witty, with fun action and loads of geekiness. I hope she plans to make more of this story line.
I've given this 3.5 as although I really enjoyed the story I was not keen on the narrative style. I struggled with the story up to about 1/4 way through but at that point I just went with the flow and enjoyed it for what it was, a thoroughly entertaining romance between a reaper and a ghost.
Quite what I expected with the supernatural. I would Recommend this book to any one who want a light Scooby-Doo-esque novel with a cute couple. One of Mia Archer's best novels.
Cute paranormal romance with likable main characters and a decent set of secondary characters. Not quite a stand alone book as it sets up the next story.
