Hans Christian Andersen (often referred to in Scandinavia as H.C. Andersen) was a Danish author and poet. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children; his stories — called eventyr, or "fairy-tales" — express themes that transcend age and nationality.
Andersen's fairy tales, which have been translated into more than 125 languages, have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness, readily accessible to children, but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Little Mermaid", "The Ugly Duckling", "The Nightingale", "The Emperor's New Clothes" and many more. His stories have inspired plays, ballets, and both live-action and animated films.
I've been a reader throughout my whole life. And all I was reading as a child were, well obviously, illustrated books. Mostly fairytales but I would also sometimes read mythology, religious tales or just short wholesome stories where the main characters were children like myself.
This specific book was given and read to me by my parents as a kid, among many others of course. I really loved the stories and, oh my god, the illustrations by Severino Baraldi were - and still are- *chef's kiss*.
Unfortunately, right around the time I was in middle school, all of my childhood books - with the exception of maybe three of them - were thrown away by my mother, without my consent of course, because I would never consent to that.
During the Christmas of 2020, I decided to give it a go and finally start haunting copies of the books I once loved and lost. Something that is definitely going to be a bit stressful because I don't think I'll ever be able to remember the titles of all the books I owned, or even track all of them, since they are quite old. But I bought some I used to own and this was one of them. Needless to say the unboxing was very emotional.
This day, and the day before, I started re-reading it. I wanted to finally be able to grasp the meanings of all of these stories, now that I am an adult and compare it to what I already remembered from reading this as a kid.
And I had a great time going down to memory lane.
Storytime's over and I think it would only be fair to speak a bit more about the book itself, instead of my feelings and nostalgia.
So, this is a collection of six stories by Hans Christian Andersen some of them very well known and some of them not as much.
I believe kids who love fairytales or love reading in general, will enjoy this. The stories are simple but not so simple that it feels like the author is questioning your intelligence and honestly, it's Andersen, maybe there's a reason he is considered a classic when it comes to fairytales!
But, I would like to add that even if you are an adult reading this, like me, I think there is something valuable to take from these stories. And even if that's not the case for you, I feel like this will at least offer you great escapism. And god knows we need that!
If you made it this far, congratulations! 'Til next time, take care :) :) :)
OMG this was a trip back to memory! I remember this book as a little one when i used to read and I still have it saved somewhere. This is the greek version of the fairytales and I always loved the swan princes and their soister story
