I haven’t done much reading in the past two months, partly from being busy with other projects but mostly because the evenings were too hot to turn on a light by which to read, and so except for the last four pages, this was read entirely on breaks at work. Since it was a collection of essays/columns, that worked just fine. I found a great deal of value in Goodman’s judgments. Written mostly during the elder Bush administration and the early days of the Clinton years, her words have been reassuring in these past bleak weeks of Bush Jr., it’s been good to know I’m not alone in my point of view. I also found much to value in her insight into our gender. She makes me damn proud of being a women. Her columns on the abortion wars opened my eyes about the political realities of legislation and the courts. Trying to pick out a few favorite essays is impossible. I can only say I value her writing very highly and look forward to reading another collection of her columns, they pack quite a punch packaged together like this rather than the fleeting words that fly by in a daily essay.
