Beatrice and Juliana are sisters and are currently living with their mother, a movie star diva. Bea write a love advice column and Juliana is between jobs all the time. She tries one thing then another but can't seem to settle on anything but bad boyfriends. Consuela is the mother who has retired from hollywood after her husband left her for another woman.
All three are witches. Juliana has visions, Beatrice sees who belong together as her talent and their mother can turn people into small animals.
I gave this story two stars because, although the characters were quirky and I enjoyed the slapstick humor of this book there were a couple problems. The sisters did nothing but pick on each other. After having traveled with my sister and had some run ins just recently, I thought it was excessive. They were like two grammar school kids that couldn't have a civil conversation.
Also, the book had the mother freezing people or locking them in a closet in stunned mode and then all of a sudden they were at the next scene. I was thinking there was something wrong with my kindle but when I went back, I had not skipped any pages. This happened twice. The author needs a better editor.
Having said that - I truly liked the plot where she was an advice columnist and the daughter got her PI license. If the authors stops the bickering and gets a better editor, I would read at least one more of the books in the series to see if it got better.
An okay read if you ignore the inconsistencies. It really needed more proofing and editing. When she discovers a dead body outside the building she rents an office in it is almost as big a shock as finding out that her sister is going to be a licensed PI. Then to add insult to injury that she has also got an office just across the hall to hers. Break-ins, assault and threats are the order of the day as her sister and mother determine to solve the case before the police. Can they do so? The plot really wasn't up to the standard that I am used to from this author and I have really been put of the two sisters by their constant bickering and the fact that the mother seems to really favour one over the other. The budding romance however was well executed and a joy to read.
This new series, is one i believe I will enjoy a lot. To me the whole family dynamics is so true of most families, minus the famous mom tie in. But the sisters who don't always get along, and th lack of shared information is about right with girls. The mystery part is pretty well done as well. Ms. Mallory always has humor into her mysteries where I actually laugh out loud. I won't give anything away, but I am looking forward to reading the next ones in the series.
Bea is a witch who writes a love advice column. A man in her office building is murdered and her sister and retired Hollywood actress mother, also witches decide they should investigate. This is a great book. The characters were well written and likeable. There was a mystery and humor.
