(Zhao)
چو (Chu)
وی (Wei)
کی (Qi)
هان (Han)
یان (Yan)

Chapters 1-8

Us humans at the base of society don't give a damn who the king is!

[Thanks to Viz and Edelweiss for a copy of this manga in exchange for an unbiased review.]

This surprised me in a good way. I wasn’t expecting much, but I do like to branch out from my usual romance genre to read new things once in a while and this drew me in super fast.

Being based on a historical record makes some of the wilder swings go down more easily and even the ‘ugly-good’ artwork grew on me after a while. It’s violent, but a lot tamer than, say, Battle Royale.

The series smartly starts with a micro focus on two war orphans, Xin and Piao, before slowly expanding out to follow the travails of an entire kingdom (with clear intent to blow that out even further to encompass all of China itself).

Rather than being broken by their circumstances, Xin and Piao train hard and work towards a future where their skill with a blade earns them the riches they can only dream about.

When that chance comes, however, it breaks them apart and then traces its way back to the king himself and a civil war that rages behind the scenes. It is terribly compelling and I appreciated how it picked up steam as it went.

Whether down to its historical basis or not, the writing here is good. Xin is a strong hero, even if he is believably childish at the outset. There were at least three times where either the main plot or a character’s reaction genuinely shocked me, which felt really satisfying.

Yes, you have to accept that a young teenager can go toe to toe with a trained assassin using nothing but determination and guts, but you have to realize you’re reading a manga and that comes with the territory.

Now, the elephant in the room here is that if you get invested in this at all, you’re staring down a series that is already over seventy volumes. You One Piece types will be fine, but I know that my attention span would never last.

Which I’m almost sad about - even knowing this won’t be an ongoing for me, I am sorely tempted to read the next volume because I am kind of intrigued to see where things are going plus the next assassin battle seems interesting (the first one is all skill, the second is all skill and dead weird).

If you like a good story with some interesting characters and lots of intrigue going on (there are at least two violent betrayals this volume and we’re not out of the starting blocks), well, you could do worse. My not reading it is down to having too much on my plate, not lack of interest.

4 stars - not my usual cup of tea, certainly, but I was very satisfied with the action and flavour of this particular blend, not to kill the metaphor. Recommended if it sounds remotely appealing.

I think this is one of the hottest and well created manga today. It is based on how the Qin Dynasty was created in China and follows the young emperor and an young warrior. History, adventure, political intrigue, coming of age and war are all included in this saga. This is great. It is not fantasy but very close to it. A heavy but exciting reading!

It is now up to vol.30. I just started reading it online. They have only upto vol.10 so I need a trip to internet/manga cafe soon!!

This is a very good series. It follows a boy named Xin who is a peasant boy in a small village who enjoys sword fight sparring with his friend, Hyou. One day his friend is adopted by a rich noble and moves away. About a month later in the middle of the night Xin hears something outside. He goes outside to find Hyou, who is bleeding severely from a stab wound. I'm gonna leave it at that so I don't give anymore spoilers. Overall this is a fantastic manga series that I would highly recommend.

4.3/5 Kingdom is a dedicated and engaging story about a boy trying to become a great general during the warring states era of medieval China. It takes a bit to get going, but once it does, you never look back. It’s incredibly impactful to see the perspective of Shin throughout the different levels of being a soldier and how the consequences impact his journey as a warrior.

I really love all of the characters as they are incredibly unique, thought provoking, and stand larger than life.

This story can suffer a bit in the beginning as the conflict is not quite interesting and more political. I’d say the story truly begins when Shin becomes a foot soldier in Duke Hyou’s army. The art is not great at the beginning. However, the art improves tremendously as the stories goes on, and I really appreciate how the author curves straight objects like glaives to show impact in scenes. I also wish there was more focus on the romantic aspects as I feel there were some that were underdeveloped. Also, the official English translation will help with the names changing inexplicably.

For a long story I thought I’d be dragging myself through, Kingdom was an engaging and light read despite the heavy topics, grounded feel, and political focus. I never felt burnout, only glad I was able to experience Shin’s journey.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️-Just now Finished First Volume Of The Manga Kingdom by Yasuhisa Hara. I have heard about this manga for literally a decade or longer as it was always in Japanese only..finally now we got an official release in English and I really enjoyed the first volume. I’ve heard many people recommend this to people who love berserk, and Vinland saga, and those are both two of my favorite mangas. I really like what I see so far and I will definitely be continuing it. Great action great story already awesome art so glad to finally have a manga. I can read again consistently besides one piece. Another thing that makes it similar to Vinland Saga is that is also a historical fiction so that’s pretty cool. You don’t see that a lot in manga. Give this first volume a four out of five stars very engaging.P.S-love that it’s set in ancient China as that’s also a pretty rare setting in manga and just overall.

I read “Kingdam” is kind of shounen manga and so mainstream that It was published by the big company “Syuuei”. The story depicts that the ancient Chinese state in the 3rd century BC. There are two important characters like a protagonist, “Hyou” and “Shin” who are manservant, but trained to fight each other everyday to be a “Shogun”,Oneday, Only Hyou served royal family. that is important event approach thier goal. However the almost beginning of the story was chaos that Hyou was killed by someone, and He gave Shin a sword and a map that showed destination where Hyou want to go. That accident as trial and failure led Shin a hero’s Journey. Shin is humane and has justice. He goes for thier dream of becoming a Shogun for Hyou.

I was recommended by my friend, I finally did it! Story is very interesting but the character’s touches are not good. The scene of killing Hyo is good. Hyo said entrust the unification of the world. Hyo is cool and I was impressed by Hyo.

Oh this manga is written so splendidly. From war strategy to characterization has surpassed my expectations for this manga.

The story constantly shades light into what it feels like to be a commoner and a solider versus what it feels like to be a king with no power. Both have physical power but yet one is able to advance and use it to his advantage. But for the other to advance he needs different power. Power to lead, help from allies, mind to make decisions for the good of his kingdom. While he has all these qualities, he doesn't have the power to follow through since someone else is better than him right now in all those things.

The fight scenes are spectacular. The layer of strategies that each general use in outwitting his opponent is so exilirating to read.
