Why: A Colliers Tale

Rate this book
This story is about a group of my workmates who were killed due to neglect, failure and total incompetence by others. They were ordinary hard working men who left their homes and families that fateful morning never to come back. The tragic event hit the headlines all over the world and I was there. I was an eighteen year old apprentice engineer and knew many of those involved including the unfortunate victims.
The courage and heroism of men who risked their lives in the attempt to save life's was outstanding. They put themselves into the most hazardous and dangerous of environments knowing they could be blown to bits or burned alive. My story will highlight their bravery and bring to light the total inaptitude of others which resulted in a lifetime of grief for thousands.
I feel I am more than competent to give my version of the terrible event. I have twenty-five years experience working in collieries, been a Trade Union Rep; had management experience and have an Honours in Mining Mechanical Engineering.
It has taken me over thirty years to write this book and I have written it simply to help the memory and create in minds that a lesson should be learned fro the opinion of some that we are only a number.

why

A truly tragic account that was preventable ,but lax procedures were the
Cause.
I am an ex. Coal miner who watched in horror as a massive slab of roof rock Detached and crushed a schoolboy friend to nothing.
I left the pIt and joined the Military, being in trouble spots and real danger around the world was safer than a 1000 feet deep .
I admire them tremendously, no where was safe.
I share your pain for all miners who never surfaced breathing , or badly hurt.
Thanks for the remembrance of very Brave men .

I got goosebumps reading this. I come from a coal mining village and my grandfather was also a coal miner.

This is a very sad story about the happenings before the disaster. One that could have definitely have been avoided. It's great to hear it from a miners perspective and you may learn a few things on the way.

My deepest condolences and on the loss of these great colliers. I have huge respect for all of you. This book is a great tribute.
