The New York Times bestselling series and basis for the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is now available in a new softcover format! This third compendium collects both Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe and Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour color edition story pages in one massive volume for maximum value. Get your hard-earned money's worth! Is Scott Pilgrim dating Ramona Flowers? Sometimes it's not exactly clear. And he's still got three evil exes to defeat, two of which are twins Kyle and Ken Katayanagi (along with their murderous robots). But it's the final evil ex Scott is really afraid of: Gideon Graves (rich, powerful, mysterious). Scott is clearly outmatched, and when he loses it all, will he have the strength to keep fighting?
Bryan Lee O'Malley is a Canadian cartoonist. His first original graphic novel was Lost at Sea (2003), and he is best-known for the six-volume Scott Pilgrim series (2004 to 2010). All of his Scott Pilgrim graphic novels were published by Portland, Oregon-based Oni Press. In July 2014 his graphic novel Seconds was released by Ballantine Books. He is also a songwriter and musician (as Kupek and formerly in several short-lived Toronto bands). -Wikipedia
Cute ending. I was shocked that both Scott and Ramona learned something and grew as cartoons by the end of this. I was honestly just expecting Scott to wander off with his friends and Ramona to head back to the States. That this weird little comic had a point never actually crossed my mind.
Everything about this reading experience has been a bit of a surprise. Scott Pilgrim had never been on my radar as something I wanted to read. The art style alone was a big deterrent, not because it's hideous, but just because it looks sort of manga-y to me. And I don't really read those. That's not a statement on the validity of the genre as my kids are wild about it, and anything they like when it comes to reading I respect out of default mode because it makes them want to read. I said that to say this: if you're on the fence about this one, you may want to give it shot. I flew through the entire series in about a week and really enjoyed my time with the world O'Malley created. It's not my typical book, but I thought was loads better than it had any right to be, so if this is your type of book, I think you'd truly love it.
Also, really glad I didn't try to read this in black and white, as that is just not my jam. The color collection was the right way to go for me.
I miss my 20s. Well no I don't. But I do miss some of those feelings. Like Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem, Scott Pilgrim makes me want to feel like a teenager, until I remember the actual feelings of a real life emotional teenager. Then I think again.
Scott Pilgrim is the kind of lovesick we were in our deepest depths of pure emotional depravity. Lovesick, loveblind, lovestupid. Every character has an analogue to my life and maybe yours too if you were a house show couch surfing type. Ramona Flowers has been in my heart for so long, it's such a joy to revisit these friends in full color. I kinda put off this last volume for a while, but it had to end (again) sometime.
All the video game glitz and goof give Scott Pilgrim its aesthetic and personality, but at its heart, this book is about dumb millennial love, making mistakes and friendship when friendship felt indefatigable. It's a special point in time, a special kind of fun and there will never be anything else like it.
Great ending after quite the journey and final boss battle through this epic tale of life and love. I’ll always enjoy rereading this series! And I especially enjoyed it in color for the first time this read through.
OK WOW BRYAN LEE O'MALLEY HAS ONCE AGAIN MADE ME FALL INLOVE. did i read this entire series in 6 hours? potentially. was it phenomenal? absolutely. this series just bumped itself up to the top of my favourite graphic novel list and bryan lee o'malley has quickly become one of my favourite artists. zamn.
im too in awe to write a proper review but hopefully ill come back and write one once ive gathered my thoughts.
for now, wallace will always be a king to me. stephen???? stephen stills and joseph???? did not expect that i will be honest stephen seemed like such a dude bro to me. im still and forever will be a scott pilgrim apologist, he did not let me down, that boy is perfect and i stand by that. also the character development that knives had? she grew up so much and i love that for her.
gideon is messed up bro mans is a psychopath thats all ill say
It's still pretty good and I liked the ending but I just feel very weird about everything Scott does and from the movie I already knew he was an asshole but I think he does even more toxic things in the books, so I didn't really feel like I rooted for him. After completing the series, the first one was my favorite.
i adore this series so much. i only read the graphic novels once about 5 years ago, and ive seen the movie a couple times since. this is my first time reading them in color, and also as an adult. when i read them when i was either 15 or 16 i paid a lot more attention to the funny video game jokes and the art (which are still amazing by the way) and a lot less on scott’s development, and the themes at play in this series. i appreciate the nuance a lot more and i just love so much how these books dive deep into the characters in so many ways. an all time favorite series, and well worth the time.
*overall review for the entire series* It’s hilarious how self aware this comic is a various points. (The moments of talking to the audience, like about The joke with Ramona’s hair and when the friends were cooking together.) I found the overall plot of series a bit much (like, you have to fight ex partners to be with your current partner? You either have to read into that a lot or just go with it to appreciate the overall story.) I loved this mostly because of the cute moments and the characters. The comparison of Scott fighting each boyfriend to a video game was kind of hilarious.
I really liked this??? Like way more than I remembered?? I don’t think I really appreciated the themes explored in these last two books. It also had more humor than I remembered too? Maybe I set my expectations too low, but I liked this a lot.
Another biased opinion, once again the movie does some things better, but I love getting all this extra lore and material I’ve never seen before. I think the living in a video game concept is so interesting, and the art is appealing. I think Scott was going genuinely insane and CASUAL SEX WHAT?
I think it went a little far with him, but I would trip out too over losing Ramona if I was him. I could follow along pretty well, but towards the final battle it became a bit jarring, and I think they moved past the negascott a little too quickly, because that was a turning point for Scott realizing his mistakes.
Overall such a fun read and I’m so glad I got these collections in color as well as turning out to have bought the entire series. I thought there was more :(
However, I am glad to have all of them so I could read it all ASAP because I did not want to stop. I loved the series and am going to check out some more of the author’s series starting with Lost at Sea.
Also once again crazy how long it took him to finally fight the two twins but I enjoyed them giving Scott and Kim a moment which made much more sense than writing Scott to want to have CASUAL SEX with Knives and Envy. Anyways 4.9/5 once again. I think the first collection was just so good and maybe it’s because it was more accurate to the movie, but regardless I loved the comics themselves. I wish the Netflix show stayed true to the comics so I could see this all animated, but anything Scott Pilgrim is just fun!

Getting into some real emotional depth with this final volume while still making me laugh out loud in public. I do wish I’d been able t’experiënce this before the movie, because it looms large, and now that I’ve seen matttt’s mini doc, I wonder if there might’ve been some cross-pollination between Wright and O’Malley? In any case, the book blows the movie (which I love) out of the water on stakes, and if you like the movie you’ve gotta give the whole series a try.
The colors continue to be awesome. The use of assistants and time crunch with the film and game coming out are unfortunately obvious in the plot, which is decompressed and rushed at the same time with lots of splash pages and big lore drops in one dialogue bubble. Fortunately, the ending and the boss fights and the party scenes are excellent, and those are the real heart of the series. It really feels like O'Malley had the Kim storyline fleshed out in his head, made perfect as he was writing the previous volumes, and filled in the rest around that.
But it's still a great combination of emotional punch and relentless homages to everything from X-Men to Sailor Moon.
Happy that Scott and Ramona learned to grow. The ending really shows how much Scott and Ramona have matured emotionally. It seems like everyone has gotten the closure they needed in order to move on with their lives and start the next chapter. After reading this I definitely got a better understanding of what happened in the ending of the 2010 movie. This series helped me reflect on myself and how I dealt with past friendships and relationships from my teens to mid 20s. Gave me perspective on how not to become an evil ex. (Hahaha…anyways)
Easily the best part of the series. I love it. The art in Vs The Universe is my favorite flavor of Scott Pilgrim designs. I feel like the theme of dealing with your romantic partner’s baggage is at its best best here. The ending is so strong and absolutely nails the feeling of being lost in your early 20’s that the entire series was designed to explore.
Volume 5 & 6 continues to carry out Scott Pilgrim’s memorable stylistic art-style and story along with cranking and concluding its themes of changing and coming of age to a 10. I’ll go out saying this is leagues above the movie’s ending but I could never not hear any of the original actors voices while reading the series
A lovely ending to this series! This was probably my favorite book of the 3. The story really grew on me with every volume and the art got better and better too. Definitely not something I would have read on my own, but I’m glad I took my husband’s recommendation and picked it up. Super fun ride.
The whole series was really emotional and I loved it. I remember what it was like to be this age and everything going on around me was so life or death it seemed like a boss battle. Highly recommend this for a graphic novel read.
Really stellar end to the series. I love how dark part 5 is in particular while still staying grounded. Scott and Ramona both have a lot of growing to do- and I appreciate the more drawn out time line. I also like Scott’s closure he finds with each of his exes.
