Billy Graham was born on a dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1918 just days after the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. At the age of 16, Graham came to Christ during a Christian revival meeting and it wasn't long before he felt the call to preach.
With the help of his wife, Ruth, and many other friends and colleagues, Billy Graham set out to preach to the world. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association was founded and since that day, Graham preached to more than 80 million people in more than 185 countries. Millions more have been reached through television, video, film and webcasts. He founded newspapers, film companies, magazines, and radio ministries.
Communism and apartheid, segregation and terrorism - Billy Graham faced up to all of Christianity's major opponents in the 20th century. From paying the bail money to get Martin Luther King, Jr. out of jail to addressing the memorial service in Washington after the collapse of the World Trade Center, Billy Graham was there for people with practical help and the timeless message of hope that he believed could only be found in Jesus Christ.
Catherine Mackenzie has written several biographies for young teens in the Trailblazers series as well as other titles for younger children. She lives in Scotland and has several nieces and nephews – a perfect practice audience!
This man and the content of the happenings of his life deserves 5 stars, but the way the material was presented was hard for my kids to pay attention to. I had to keep asking them if they were paying attention, and we read a lot.
Wow! This is a really interesting book about Billy Graham. He was meeting with world leaders and quietly/openly working toward human rights, racial equity and unity not just in the United States but all over the globe. Whether you're interested in Billy Graham, "America's Pastor," or history and the movements behind closed doors, you'll find this informational.
Billy Graham truly was the real authentic deal.
I highly recommend this short, informative, inspiring read.
Enjoyed this book. Nice and short, with easy to read chapters. Left out a good chunk of info about his later life, theology, and etc. But great overview of his story.
Having been raised as a Christian, Billy Graham is a name I can’t remember ever not knowing. I have heard mention of him over and over in my life. Despite knowing about his ministry, I knew very little about his life. Billy Graham: Just Get Up Out of Your Seat by Catherine Mackenzie is a great introduction to learning about the man who is Billy Graham. A Christian icon who is known throughout the world, I had no idea how his ministry came to be. I had no idea how clearly God had His hand on this man from the very start.
This is a book meant for young readers. As such, it’s not a very in-depth look at Billy Graham. And, no, I didn’t expect depth. It’s the perfect length for children to get the basics without being bored. It’s written in an easy-to-read format that most young readers shouldn’t have much trouble understanding. As an adult reading this, I found this to be an educational appetizer. I find myself wanting to learn even more about Billy Graham.
The editing in this book wasn’t quite up to my standards, but the minor errors I saw didn’t make the book unreadable. It just made me shake my head in frustration at times. While I think kids won’t have a problem reading through it, I think books written for youngsters should be as close to perfect as possible. Reading is a large contributor to children’s understanding of our language – and how to use it properly. Books with subpar editing aren’t helping kids, who are still in the throes of learning English and all of its nuances.
