This is mostly a health-nutrition book, in spite of more than half of it being taken up by recipes. The information about using a ketogenic diet for weight loss or lifestyle change, as opposed to low-fat diets, is excellent, although I would have preferred it to have a bibliography. I felt I needed to read at least one other book for validation of the more scientific aspects, and also did a lot of my own research online, though all of that is probably a good idea anyway when one is changing one's eating pattern. Still, a bibliography would have been nice, to steer me in the right direction.
I can't say much yet about the recipes, as I have yet to try any of them. I have marked a few that I am looking forward to trying, the first of which will likely be the Pumpkin Cream Soup. A few of the recipes seem to have either typos or oddities that I couldn't explain. One recipe had no obvious source of sweetness, although it was clearly intended as a sweet flavored food. Although I don't ordinarily like specific brands to be called out in most recipes, I would have liked some suggestions for brands of bacon that don't have sugar, since it's used in so many of the recipes, and every bacon I've ever purchased had sugar. So be aware, if you use this book for recipes, that you need to check the ingredients labels on what you buy, and ensure they are right for your eating plan and your cooking style.
One reason I won't be using many of the recipes is that they have dairy, and I have someone in the house who can't eat dairy. For that reason it would have been nice if those recipes that are non-dairy were marked as such. Then I wouldn't have to read through every single ingredient list. But I'm used to that. Some will likely allow for non-dairy substitutions, and I'll probably experiment with that.
Most of the recipes use ingredients that anyone starting a ketogenic meal plan should probably have on hand, though some of them are new to me. The cookbook section does not require that one use a specific brand of anything, which I like.
I am 95% happy with this book, and glad I read it. EDIT: I've raised my rating to 4.5 stars rounded to 5. Highly recommended.
This book is a great place to start for anyone who has considered keto or is curious about it. They describe complex ideas in simple terms and the book is very simple and easy to follow in its layout. They also provide a basis for pantry staples and provide lots of starter recipes. Highly recommend!
Very informative. It needs reading a few times for everything to sink in - but if you’re looking to start a Keto diet - this is a mine of useful information
Perfect introduction to the Keto diet with complete guide and shopping list. I've definitely gained nutritional knowledge even if the Keto diet isn't for me.
Excellent information, quick short informative blurbs that are easy to digest [no pun intended]. Very efficient way to convey a lot of material to get the basics down.
