I was really hoping this was gonna be a five star book for me, but unfortunately it wasn't. I loved Damaged, but Damaged 2 didn't blow me away like the first one did.
This book started off really well, it picked up right where it left off. I love Peter and I wasn't disappointed by his character, Sidney was a bit stubborn and I wanted to slap her a couple of times. I love a bit of a scuffle when I read a book and I was pleasantly surprised when Peter proved that he is no doormat and wont sit and watch while someone hurts his girl.
Okay so in this book we get to read about Peter's past and family. Okay so saying anything about Peter's family would be a spoiler so I won't. I will say this though, I wasn't impressed, I didn't understand what all the fuss was about them. I understand each brother has his own secrets and most of them are dark, but was that reason enough for them to be so infamous? Except for Sean of course, but in the case of everyone else for a minute I thought they were the mob or something. And Sean's past I mean "Hello???", Peter wasn't even sure about what had happened, but he said he would stick by him through anything (well that's the vibe I got).
Let's skip along till to the end. Firstly the villain, gave up way to easily in my opinion. I mean this guy is one twisted freak and all it takes is a beating and just like that he's gone! Secondly, Sidney's brother is a hateful piece of I won't say, he's also a waste of space and the situation with him need some addressing which it didn't get!
And finally something huge happened to this girl and nothing was done about it! Even after her mother had read her journals, she didn't let the police or anyone know! Sidney was ostracized by her entire family and community because they didn't believe her. And it all just got swept under the rug!
Be that as it may, I did enjoy the book, it's just that it lacked in something. I'll be reading Miss H.M Wards Arrangement Series and Stripped because reading this book had me intrigued about the other brothers. I take no pleasure in pointing out what I didn't like in a book, but it was an issue for me and I felt I had to mention it.
I should have probably said this in the beginning but I'll say it now, it would be better if you read H.M. Ward's Arrangement Series before reading this series, you don't have to, I didn't and I didn't have any trouble keeping up with anything. But I wish I had had a better understanding of Peter's brother, Sean's character.
ARC copy received from Author for an honest review!
I hate to go against the masses on this one but I honestly didn't see what everyone else saw in the high praises. I really liked Damaged, so much that I pre-ordered Damaged 2 and happily opened it when it was promptly delivered at midnight. But I was fairly quickly floored and left feeling like I was trying to read the numbers on the lotto balls as they are popping around waiting to see which one was going to stick and actually start to make some sense. One thing I felt really fell short was the lack of resolution for Peter's feelings about Gina. In the first book he couldn't sleep with Sidney because of his love for Gina, and in this book he again says that he wants to take it slow with how far he and Sidney go because it feels like he's cheating on Gina (but then they still sleep together that same night?!), and he also says if he could kill to bring Gina back he would. This surprised me, as it was said in the present, not as something he felt in the past, and he says it to Sidney. Yet the author never once explores the conundrum of how Sidney must feel about any of Peter's revelations regarding Gina. And to top it all off, she's going to end up with Gina's last name too? That's just all too much to have the characters ignore and never explore, in my opinion. The stuff with Avery was odd, at best. Sidney goes from being timid and shy about what she feels Avery might be suggesting toward her, to having enough of a backbone to immediately go toe to toe with Sean, someone whose name alone 'sends ice down her spine', all within the span of a few minutes?? So much just didn't make sense at all for me. I wasn't sure if a book 3 was supposed to come out and that is why so many storylines were never explained or if the author was just using them as filler. But we never got to hear what Peter chased off to discuss with his mom, we never got explanation for Jonathan's statement "are you guys getting married, you know mom will never give her blessing after --" and Peter cuts him off, we never learned why Sean said "we can go, I got what Peter needs to help you from Dad" or why the pitstop at the Ferro lunch was ever necessary to begin with. I could go on but I just wanted to give an explanation for why I didn't see what everyone else saw in this one. This whole book just feels like a bunch of 'doesn't make sense' chapters rather than a fluid story like the first one, it was disappointing overall for me.
I really liked Sidney in the first book and her relationship with Peter. I also thought she was a strong character, but when she found out about Peter's past she turned into a judgmental bitch (such a hypocrite considering her own shit) and that pissed me off bad.
Peter's family: Was I the only one who didn't care about the Ferro family? Was I supposed to be surprised? Because I wasn't.
Sidney's family: Let's give Sidney's mother the award for Best Mother of the Year because that idiot deserves it. How can you not trust your own blood, even worst, your own daughter? And when you do it's through a piece of paper!!! Really? If she believed her diary, how come she sent her son to bring Sidney back home but she didn't go see her personally? She was supposed to support her and be there for her. Instead she decided to stay at home. Let me not say a word about Sam still choosing Dean's side even when he was present during his altercation with Sidney in the parking lot.
And to end this rant perfectly, what the fuck was the deal with the Turkey? Mr. Turkey? Really? What are we, twelve?
I expected so much more from this sequel and I was disappointed. But then again what can you actually expect when the author chose Damaged 2 as the title.
Wow wow wow! First, I received an ARC for an honest review so here goes:
HM Ward really outdid herself with this book! Peter Grantz and Sidney pick up right where we left off on Damaged 1 after she was attacked by Dean and has a fight with Sam.
She is heading home to face her past and see her mother who is sick... Along the way home she faces her inability to judge people, her fear of Dean, and finds a new pet that is hysterical. Seriously!! I absolutely laughed out loud at the pet and how Peter catches it for her.
When she finally gets to meet Sean, things are crazy. Peter's family is a freaking mess and Sidney has to make some choices.
Throughout this story, Sidney learns more about her inner strengths and about how to love and be loved even by the people she thought couldn't or wouldn't love her back.
I love the characters in this book. I love how they relate to one another, I love the realistic way they talk, I love how the more I read about them the more I want to read about them.
I never give spoilers so if your a fan of HM Ward you will love this book. Now not only do we have Sean (super sexy hotness himself) and Peter (so yummy sweet I want to lick him) but now we meet Jon (fun, flirtastic and rich!) oh yeah! Another brother to love!
Wow. I liked Damaged #1 but I REALLY liked Damaged #2.
As is usually the case with a sequel, this one started off exactly where the last one left off. Sidney is finally heading home. After receiving some devastating news from her brother, she finally sees its time to go back and face the past that haunts her. Dean included.
I knew there would be drama involved her, including relationship drama, so I wasn't too surprised when it popped up. What did surprise me though was that both parties were mature about it and worked through their issues.
Once again I loved the characters here, although Sidney did irritate me at times. I also felt that it was very obvious that Holly is the author of both The Arrangement series and Damaged. At times I felt like I was reading about both Avery (from The Arrangement series) and Sidney. The two of them are very similar and even seemed to say a lot of the same things.
Another character surprise for me was Sean. Anybody that has read the Arrangement series will be familiar with him. Well, I say you should be, but his appearances in Damaged were so strange to me. I felt like I was reading about a totally new character, somebody I knew nothing about. I love Sean in his own series but in this one he was completely unloveable and honestly a bit of an asshole. He did redeem himself a little in the end but had i only known him through Damaged I wouldn't be in a hurry to read his own series.
The plot lines were once again engaging and assisting. One thing in particular that was a constant throughout the book was a certain turkey's presence. I won't say too much but just know it was absolutely hilarious. I like that Sidney got the peace she so desperately needed in life and that was all thanks to her family and Peter. None of that felt false or unrealistic, her relationships weren't fixed in a rush.
My only disappointment really was the ending. All of a sudden I found myself near the end and so much was happening that I couldn't help but think it was all a little rushed. Another thing was the lack of epilogue. I feel like a broken record here but it's just something I need in the end of a series. It gives me peace of mind and the ability to move on.
*ARC provided by author in turn for an honest review.*
Just read the ARC!!!! Fabulous book! It truly developed the characters and really let us see what was going on with Peter and Sidney. Sidney was having to deal with her past nightmares that Dean had caused her. She new she was going to have to face him and go home and see her sick dying mother and try to mend her family.. Still spinning by finding out just who Peter really was about crushed her. Sidney was hurt by his deception but realized that Peter was fighting his own feelings. Deception truly never crossed his mind until now. He still showed up to save her over and over when she needed him. He thought he ruined their chances of being happy. The one girl who brought him back from the cliff he didn't know what to do or how to fix it. Every step forward for them was met with an obstacle?... Sean appears and tries to push Sidney away from his brother... feeing she was NOT what he needed. Will Sidney let Sean succeed? Sidney soon comes face to face with her past and this time doesn't freeze determined to give back to Dean what he deserves. Does she take it to far or can Peter guide her? Mr. Turkey was the little break in serious that will make you laugh. This book is a must read and connects to Sean's story in the Arrangement Series!
I feel completely jipped. It was so bad, it had me questioning my four-star review of the first one. As it is, I might have to reread that one in the future. Who knows, maybe I was loopy when I read it. I expected so much more from this sequel. I'm actually a little ticked, seeing as I took the leap and pre-ordered this one.
The entire book felt like the author had moved on. As if she didn't care for the story or the characters anymore. It felt like this was written more out of obligation than anything else. If there was any real passion or effort put into it, I couldn't see it.
First, the title. When I first found out that DAMAGED 2 was the actual title, I was disappointed. It's unoriginal and a little bit lazy, in my opinion. I mean, really. I'm a strong believer in titles. An author should give some thought to a title, no matter if it's their debut or their 50th novel. I would have even been satisfied with a more simple title, such as "Renewal," "Remedy," or something along those lines...
Second, it was much much shorter than I think it should have been. It felt like everything was over in a flash. Also, I just didn't like the story thread presented in this one. Sydney was a hypocritical wimp, really. Her reaction to Peter's "secret identity" really annoyed me, especially considering her own secrets. Their whole estrangement was pointless, as well. I was kind of digging Millie's presence on the road trip but didn't appreciate the author making her a fellow rape-victim. Of course, Millie is promptly thrown away in favor of Peter. What was the point of Millie coming along in the first place? Peter's family also makes an appearance. A completely pointless one. Sean and Jonathan are teasers. His parents barely figure at all.
Furthermore, the worst part? THERE WAS NO HEAT!!! Nothing! Some tender kisses and whispered touches, sure. The sex was there, as well...briefly. It was by no means satisfying. Sydney and Peter end up sequestered in hotel rooms for the majority of this book. There should have been enough sexual tension to fuel a rocket to Pluto, but I couldn't even leave the earth's atmosphere. When the two finally do have sex, the scene is woefully inadequate. Not to mention, lacking in detail! Sorry to play into the stereotype, but I'm a girl. I like detail! To make matters worse, it was their only sex scene! What was up with that?! There was plenty of room for some steamy encounters, but -- like I said -- the author was lazy and in a hurry. Unacceptable.
Sydney's family confrontation was also annoying. I mean, you expect me to believe it went that smoothly? Come on. Of course, she confronts them alone because the author just couldn't resist throwing in the whole bit about her leaving Peter for his own good. Please. Anyway, the family presented in this book wasn't the one that refused to believe her about Dean. Her dad (a shallow and one-dimensional character) wastes no time in ushering her back into the fold. Supposedly, her mother hadn't believed Sydney about the raping until after she had fled; her mother read her diaries. This didn't make sense. Why would her mother believe Sydney's diaries and not her daughter who wrote the diaries?! Okay, so, her mother believes her. Why didn't her mother try to find Sydney, then? Isn't that what a mother would do? Furthermore, Sydney's brother and father. The mother threatens Dean with death by frying pan. How thick are these guys? Wouldn't they take this as a sign? Wouldn't the mother try to convince them, at least? More confusion. Sydney's family didn't fit the mold I had imagined for them. If you're going to have a seemingly normal family that doesn't believe their teenage daughter was raped, I need the family to be more dynamic. There needs to be some seething depths. There needs to be more to the story.
The ending was bogus, too. I'm still not over Sydney's whole reaction to Dean in the first book, either. She started out as such a strong character--based on my past review--but increasingly becomes the victim. Even when she's about to kill Dean, she's a victim. And, as stated in my review of the first book, it never once occurs to her that Dean might torture another girl. Can you say self-absorbed? I think I would have preferred Sydney at least recognizing this possibility and still choosing to stay quiet rather than her not thinking of it at all. Ughh! So much frustration. Even though Peter and Sean scared Dean away from Sydney, that doesn't mean the rest of the female population is safe!
Of course, Peter proposes and Sydney accepts. Because what else is there in life?! How could there ever be a happy ending without a marriage proposal?! Oh! Perish the thought! Also, a note. Peter's exuberance in having Sam as a brother was incredibly annoying and perplexing. In the last book, they almost came to blows. Sam is a blind idiot, and suddenly Peter's all cool with this.
The only characters introduced in this book that I thought had potential were Avery the Call Girl and Mr. Turkey the bra-wearing vulture. And, by the way, Mr. Turkey never did get to see that vet...
I didn't appreciate the teasers regarding Peter's brothers, either. Maybe that's where all the author's attention went, because it certainly wasn't with this book. It's all well and good to do a series revolving around a set of brothers. However, that doesn't mean you can just abandon one brother for another. Seriously.
In the end, MAJOR disappointment. The only thing DAMAGED was my faith in this author...and my bank account.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
One star is for Peter, one star is for Sean and one is for all the teasing and joking between the characters which was pretty funny. Otherwise this book was a disappointment to me. It's a pity, though, because I loved Damaged. However three stars feels way too much for this book, because Sidney was really irritating, and I feel like my eyes are hurting from all the eye rolling I was doing.
Anyway the reason I didn't enjoy the book as much as I would like to was the way Sidney acted after she found out who Peter was. She was so judgmental and acted like he committed crime against humanity (well close to it :D), when all he wanted to do was start a new life, as same as Sidney (hypocrite much?). Also I hated how Sidney was towards her family after everything that happened. Nobody in her family believed her and her brother still brings her rapist around and all she say is "he is my brother" or "they are my family". Well fuck that, I hated them and I couldn't understand how could she go and act like nothing ever happened. And lastly, the question I kept asking myself from the page one was - WHY AREN'T YOU GOING TO POLICE???? He is threatening her, hurting her and all she does is ..... NOTHING!!!! Pffff
4.5 stars. I enjoyed this second book more since I'm already acquainted with Peter & Sidney. Although I'm a fan of the university setting in the first book, I liked the direction this one has taken. I also appreciated the many funny moments in the book! Having met Sean & Jonathan Ferro, I now want to read about them!!
M. Danica 🩷😊
Wow! WOw! JUST WOW! 5 stars is such a poor mark for this book! So 10 stars from me and even more!
"I SEE THRU YOUR CLOTHES YOUR NERVE DAMAGE SHOWS TRYING NOT TO FEEL ANYTHING THAT'S REAL" (Nerve Damage by Lifehouse)
I loved the first book but this one...I can't say that it is better but I simply couldn't put it away. I read all night long. I was so absorbed with Sid and Pete. Yeh, they are damaged but only together they'll manage to repair it. Thanks a lot, H. M. Ward!!!
Sydney & Peter grow close as friends & co-workers but the attraction to each other is still there waiting under the surface. It isn’t until they both find out they have a mutual love for swing dancing that they start to let their guard down around each. But Sydney has spent the last four years running from her past. When she is needed back home, she will have to face the past she wanted to leave behind. And Peter becomes the person who wants to save her from returning to hell. This second book in the Damaged Series does not disappoint. The humor & tension between Sydney & Peter is still the foundation for this tale.
WTH?!? I thought that "Damaged" was a good piece of realistic, contemporary fiction that touched upon many issues which I find compelling: sexual abuse, family dynamics, family members' differing reactions towards the rape victim, Post-Traumatic Stress, culture & decorum in academia, & the taboo student/professor relationship.... I was eager to read the sequel-- "Damaged 2"-- b/c I honestly believed that it would expound on the issues & dilemmas presented in the first novel. Unfortunately, however, "Damaged 2" made caricatures of the main characters & the sensitive issues driving the storyline in "Damaged 1." I ABSOLUTELY HATED THE PLOT TWIST THAT REVEALED PETER'S TRUE IDENTITY-- that Peter's family is a hybrid of the Gotti family & the Kardashians & is fodder for the tabloids.... WTF?!? Couldn't the author leave well enough alone-- that Peter was a young English professor who had just completed his PhD?!? The English professor storyline was hot. The dysfunctional tabloid crime family? Not so much.... And just when I thought that the book couldn't get any worse, Sid rescued a vulture from the side of the highway & Peter dressed it in a pink bra. WTF, WTF, WTF?!? Was the author on crack when she wrote this sequel? I CANNOT, for the life of me, understand how the author transitioned from the serious tone & realistic storyline of the first novel to the "asinine" & almost satirical storyline of the sequel.... Reading about pet vultures clad in lingerie may have been amusing if I were strung out on E.... But unless you're reading this book while partaking in psychedelic drugs, you will undoubtedly notice the numerous gaps & inconsistencies in the storyline & the myriad of questions left unanswered by the novel's end. A very disappointing *1.5 out of 5 stars.*
For some reason my review was deleted... so this is going to be short and sweet since I read this 6 months ago...
I have grown to love the style of HM Ward. This book had just the right amount of humor and a bit of sexy mixed in. Sidney has to come to terms with who Peter is. She knows the name and the demons that come with it. But beyond the family name drama we have Sidney's past that is coming at her full-force. Peter wants her trust and for her to understand that he is not the man that he was years ago, but even though she can't seem to give that to him - he can't risk her safety.
H.M. Ward hooked me with the bad-boy-hooker-buying brother Sean in The Arrangement Series, then she had me craving more of Peter after giving us such great humor and romance in Damaged... Now we get to watch Peter and Sidney's story unfold with just as much romance and humor, but with a little drama mixed in.
If you need more from your romance reads than just sex scenes after sex scenes...heroines that constantly are holding their breath...this is your book. You get two screwed up characters that are so lovable, a well written story and in the middle of all the drama unfolding you are able to completely get lost in moments that will have you laughing. A great combination of all that is needed to make this a perfect read.
I received this book as an ARC from H.M. Ward for an honest review. Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed reading this story. Book 2 picked up where Damage 1 left off. Peter offers to go home with Sidney to see her sick mother. But before they leave Peter decides to make a confession he felt Sidney needed to know before he goes with her. When Sidney finds out his secret she is taken back more so because she said Peter lied to her. This starts the journey off with a bang. Between Texas and New Jersey so many things happen. I know one thing I constantly found myself laughing out loud because as the two of them spend more time together they start to become closer defences are lowered and you can feel the trust coming through. Still stuck on their extra passenger lol. You meet his family and finally hers that gives you incite and the misconceptions on each of them and their stories. With the introduction of Peter's brothers I want to read their stories now. Hope to see Peter and Sidney in "Stripped" Jonathan Ferro's story coming soon. It was fun!!!
4.5 Let's be honest, it's not often I can get through an H.M. Ward book without getting pissed, but I laughed though most of this one. But Mr. Turkey might have been the cause of that. Now can we please start finishing the rest of the Ferro Family books. Damn it!!!!
I received a copy of Damaged 2 for an honest review.
Oh. My. Goodness. H.M. Ward has officially rocked my world. In all honesty Ward’s work before Damaged to me does not compare to the awesomeness of these novels.
After the horrible events of Sidney’s ex-boyfriend showing up with her brother in attempt to bring her home to see her sick mother Sidney and Peter are even closer than before. Now trying to find a way home Peter must come clean about who he really is: Peter Ferro, Sean Ferro’s brother. With that truth Sidney leaves Peter and heads to face her demons alone or well with Millie her best friend and roommate. The two begin to run into problems when Dean pops up at a gas station and demands Sidney come with him. Rescue comes though, in form of a very angry but drops dead sexy Peter Ferro who takes care of Dean and sends Millie home.
Now Sidney and Peter are thrown together again and with both anger, betrayal, and sexual tension handing in the air they both must come to terms with each-others past and decide if they can put everything aside for a future together. More problems ensue when Peter and Sidney meet up with Peter’s brother Sean who does everything he can to keep Sidney and Peter apart. Now Sidney must go home and face the demons of her past, but will she be strong enough to handle it?
So holy crap I am so in love with this series. First off I would NOT recommend this book to people who haven’t read The Arrangement Series for a couple reasons. For one Sean and Avery from The Arrangement Series appear in Damaged 2 and without that prior knowledge their relationship in this novel would be a tad confusing. Now, oh Holy Damaged 2 has left me reeling. First off the ending was just amazing. I loved everything in this story from the Turkey who’s not a turkey to the entire back story of both Peter and Sidney to the different side of Sean we get to see in this novel to…well I could go on and on about how much I loved this novel. Damaged 2 is such a unique novel with such an amazing story line. I’ve never read a story like it and honestly I think that’s saying a lot because I read a lot and after a while some novels seem to become similar or follow a similar style. Holly definitely has an amazing writing voice and Damaged was definitely one of those novels that will have readers loving her even more.
All in all, in case you missed it during my rant above I loved Damaged 2. It’s an intoxicating novel that will leave readers craving more of every character’s story. Damaged 2 is definitely a unique story was great characters and even better storytelling and writing. Again I wouldn’t recommend this story to anyone who hasn’t read even a little bit into the Arrangement Series or anyone under the age of 18. Damaged 2 is a great New Adult story and if anyone enjoyed J. Lynn’s New Adult Novel Wait for You, or Losing It by Cora Carmack you will most definitely fall in love with H.M. Ward’s Damaged Series.
Favorite Quote: I nearly choke. “What? We can’t stay in the honeymoon suite.” I’m next to Peter at the counter now, ready to jump over the edge to look for an alternate option. “You must have another room.”
“I’m sorry dear, but we don’t. There’s a convention that has us all booked up. The room is very lovely.”
“But it’s a…” sex room! It’s for happy couples, married couples. It’s not for us! I don’t say any of it. The words bounce around in my head like bowling balls crushing every other thought. Instinct is telling me to keep space between Peter and me, but I can’t, and this makes it worse.
Peter is grinning at me. “It’s a… what, Sidney?” He’s leaning on the counter wearing that tight tee shirt with a lazy, sexy smirk. I hate him.
“Nothing.”
“No, you defiantly thought it was something. Go ahead and tell us.” He’s teasing me.
My face heats up as a blush travels from cheek to cheek. Screw it. I say the first thing that comes into my head. “It’s just that I’m sure it’s a beautiful room and I don’t want it to get messed up like last time. Peter has issues controlling himself. He makes love like a rabid monkey and things tend to break. I don’t want to ruin your best room. That’s all.”
Peter’s mischievous grin widens, like the statement is true. I meant to embarrass him, but it obviously didn’t work.
The old woman pats my hand, pulling my gaze away from Peter. She says, “I know dear,” and looks up at Peter and winks. The girlish look on her face implies that she intimately knows what I mean.
I blink twice, certain that I heard her wrong. It makes Peter laugh. He grabs the key from the woman and says, “Thank you,Betsy. I promise that I won’t break anything while I make wild monkey love to my friend.”
I am so disappointed! What a major let down! I gave the first book 5★'s and couldn’t wait to get started on this one and I am not sure what happened! This wasn’t even the same Sidney we met in the first book. There were so many little side things being said or done and none of it made sense or was answered. I still want to read The Arrangement series but really am just so disappointed in the conclusion to this story. I saw so much more potential for Peter and Sidney and really, this just fell flat.
Super short book. Would've liked more Peter. I am intrigued by Sean now so I will for sure check out his stories. The turkey, well that was just weird. Would've liked more story.
I loved damaged, and damaged 2 picks up right where it left off.
Damaged was the first of H.M. Wards books I have read, but I will definitely be going back to get the arrangement series as soon as I have more money in my amazon account.
Please remember that this is a sequel to Damaged. Buy that book first or you will be pretty lost. Also, as a suggestion get the arrangement series and stripped. I was a little lost as to the significance of who Dr. Peter Grantz was. There was a brief explanation of the brothers, but I was still a bit confused. I finally caught the just (like I said I will be getting the arrangement series next).
**I'm trying not to have any spoilers** (if you haven't read the first book you'll get a little back story right now)
I was angry, sad, and a little depressed after damaged ended in a cliffhanger. I didn't know how Sidney was going to deal with her past and what was going to happen with her & her professor/boss Peter? She left behind her mother, father and twin brother after an abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend. Moved across the country to escape and go to college. Where she meet-cute with a very hot man (Peter). Turns out Peter is a new professor at her college--even better, she is his TA!!! Of course lots of things happen in between here SERIOUSLY GET THE BOOK, but she has decided to head home to her estranged family after news that her mother was sick. Damaged 2 story...
Damaged 2 was extremely well written and even though I received an advanced copy that was still subject to changes, I personally found no errors. if there were any the were minor enough that i didn't notice. I know grammatical and spelling errors can definitely put a damper on any good book. The story had a great flow, made me laugh, made me nervous, and made me love Peter and Sidney even more. This book gives hope that two damaged people can have a fresh start!
