I was in the mood for a re-read, and as expected, I ended up with the biggest book hangover after finishing Lake Silence and Crowbones.
I absolutely ADORE this series, and the characters from Sproing—huge love for them! ♡

Ever since binge-reading The Others series last year, I've been a massive fan of Anne Bishop. I’m a huge urban fantasy/fantasy fan, and with authors like Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh, and Patricia Briggs already on my shelf, discovering Anne Bishop has been a delightful addition to my go-to list of authors in this genre.
Lake Silence, the 6th book in The Others series, takes place in the same world as books 1-5. It follows Vicki, a divorcee trying to rebuild a rustic resort she inherited as part of her divorce settlement.
At this point, I have to admit: whatever Anne Bishop writes, I’m in. Lake Silence just cemented that for me. It pulled me out of a reading slump and held me in its grip for an entire day. Yep, this was a one-sitting read—no distractions, no interruptions. I was in book heaven!
Anne Bishop has this rare ability to create vibrant, multifaceted characters, intricate story arcs, and a world brimming with magic and possibilities. Her writing pulls me in every time, and I can’t get enough. I’m not sure if Lake Silence is a standalone or the start of a new arc, but either way, I’m hooked.
Vicki felt so relatable—she’s just like you or me. A regular person who made the mistake of marrying the wrong guy. But what really stood out was how she handled life after her divorce. She’s open-minded, friendly, non-judgmental, and genuinely cares about the people she meets—human or not. That willingness to accept others is what sets her apart from the rest of the town, and the terra indigene definitely noticed.
As is typical in Anne Bishop’s novels, Vicki doesn’t get to choose her role. The terra indigene select her as their middlewoman, and that’s that. But it works. Her easygoing personality and hardworking nature make her the perfect bridge between humans and the terra indigene.
The interactions between Vicki, the humans, and the terra indigene are a perfect blend of humor, heart, and the kind of charm only Anne Bishop can deliver. Her storytelling is unique, enchanting, and completely immersive—every character feels alive, and you’ll find yourself coming back to these books year after year.
If you enjoy a captivating story where the dynamics between different species are at the heart of the plot, where characters do the right thing even if it might get them killed, and where the world is filled with creatures far more powerful—and far more dangerous—than you can imagine, then you’ll love this book. It’s a world where you’re at the mercy of forces that are as fierce as they are chilling, yet still capable of kindness. It’s a place where people trying to make a better life can find their place, and where that effort is nothing short of magical.
I could go on and on about this book, this series, and this author. But to sum it up: if you haven’t tried Anne Bishop yet, you absolutely should.
Her writing is top-notch, her storytelling is out of this world, and her characters will steal your heart from the very first page. Lake Silence is a tale of monsters, good and evil, greed, hope, and perseverance—what’s not to love?
