Rate this book
First time in print!

The hit Legendary Comics' and Webtoon digital comic series is released in print for the first time with expanded artwork and bonus material!

Natali Presano never fit into her father’s perfectly human world: politically ambitious, he turned his back on her just when she needed him most. Losing her mother to tragedy as a young child, Natali fled the safety of home into the arms of her aunt Selena, the mysterious guardian of a magical order waging a centuries-old war for survival in the mountains of Spain.

Natali, now in her 20s, has followed in her aunt’s footsteps, becoming a powerful but rebellious witch in her own right. Returning to Seattle, she finds herself caught between a cruel modern world and the ancient evil threatening to destroy it.

I had to put a lot of effort in trying to understand this book. The art is very confusing....I think there's some continuity mistake with the panels. Ahh gave me a headache.

Yeeeesh. I had high hopes for this one, especially given Chobot’s involvement. But in the first few pages, we’re hit with a deeply improbably political twist, a pretty big mistake in the art that gets repeated for panel after panel and a moment where a pregnant mother abuses her child in full view of a political presser and nobody even blinks at it. Things don’t get much better from there, and given that this is published by Legendary, one can never quite shake the notion that all of this is really just an elaborate pitch for TV or movie development.

This comic book is an interesting print form of a webtoon series that captures season 1. Natali Presano was born to her mother and father in a hospital, but only her father left with her. Her mother died with a secret about her past. As Natali got older, her father ended up moving on with a new wife and they got pregnant. Her stepmother was pretty evil, and then Natali retaliated, her father decided she needed to go somewhere for safety, but it mainly felt like she was being pushed out of the way.

Luckily, Natali's invisible best friend, Luken, appeared and offered to take her somewhere else. It turns out Natali's mother was from somewhere different, where people have powers, and Natali trained with her mother's sister. Until, after winning contests, she received the firebrand. Now, she is returning to the place where she grew up, as her aunt's apprentice.

However, an ancient evil in the dark underground of Seattle is resulting in some gruesome deaths, and Natali and her friends must work to stop it before it's too late.

What I loved: This is perfect for action-packed comic book/manga lovers. The story is easy to follow and illustrated with many panels on each page. There's a lot of color, cool characters, and plenty of dialogue to help readers follow along. There are also many twists and turns that I did not see coming (having never seen the webtoon), so the book was really engaging. The supernatural elements of the book were really interesting, and the world is built well so that it is easy to follow along. There's mystery, suspense, some romance, and loads of action/adventure, so a little bit of something for everybody.

Final verdict: Would highly recommend this series for anyone who loves sci-fi/fantasy comic books/manga. FIREBRAND: THE INITIATION OF NATALI PRESANO is highly engaging and put together beautifully.

This just isn't very good. It's about a girl who has magic. She goes to live with her mom's side of the family to learn how to control it. She returns to Seattle as an adult to fight magical enemies. She isn't allowed to kill even though the bad guys are draining the life force of people left and right, leaving stacks of bodies everywhere. The story is really confusing and often contradicts itself. The art is decent but suffers from same face. Over half of the characters are brunette women who all look exactly the same. I couldn't tell any of them apart.

So many YA fantasy cliches in the plot and worldbuilding. It’s got a bad case of everything and everybody needing to have an absurdly unique name. Overall the writing is about as good as a C-tier Buffy episode. The art has a few rough spots but it’s generally fine. The lettering was awful, so many mistakes or confusion with the reading order or who’s speaking.
