Truly a tsunami of tackiness.

Heroine has MAJOR daddy issues. Her dad is a slim, sophisticated charming blond who has been cheating on his wife and getting away with it all his life. So naturally, for years, heroine has been involved with one charming, philandering, blond man after another. Except they don't marry her. It's all brief affairs and then she gets dumped. The latest one was married. She broke up with him but still keeps his framed photo by her bedside WHHHAAATTTTT????

Hero is a dark-haired, heavily muscled, no-nonsense horse farmer. He meets heroine when he goes to her office to clear up a tax issue with the IRS. For some inexplicable reason, he falls in love at first sight with her then spends the rest of the story relentlessly pursuing her while she just as relentlessly friend-zones him. She is not even remotely attracted to him. But when she meets his younger brother, who fits exactly into the slim, blonde, playa type she always goes for, her bikini parts instantly tingle. YUCK!

It seemed to me that heroine was a true OW, despite all the hand wringing and endless navel gazing about how she didn't want to lead the hero on, didn't want to hurt him, etc. She eventually succumbed to his repeated proposals, not because she realized he was the better man or she fell in love with him but because she felt that marriage to him would provide security and a readymade family. She thought that she could somehow manage to have a marriage of convenience AND fight her lust for her brother-in-law at the same time: Great Plan!

The night before her wedding, she shows up in her neglige in the kitchen at 2 AM and lo and behold there is the hot younger brother there at the same time. So she does what every blushing bride who is about to get married in church would do in her place, which is to share a bourbon and a kiss with her future brother-in-law! The hero catches them red-handed and understandably flies off the handle. Instead of apologizing, she immediately jilts him, leaving in the middle of the night like a thief, nary a thought for him or his gracious family who welcomed her with open arms and are going to be left humiliated when they have to explain the next morning why the wedding was abruptly canceled.

Now, a normal Harlequin heroine would go into a decline at this point but this one actually thrives. She gets a big promotion at work and goes on with her life as if nothing is amiss. It's the hero who has to come after her yet again to apologize for "misreading" the situation and humbly asks her hand in marriage again.

Trust me when I tell you, she will be cheating on him with the brother or some other blond himbo within six months, but with a thousand justifications and excuses how it is totally not her fault, and hero will apologize to her again! Gross story :(

Genre: Category Romance
Setting: Wash DC
Sensuality: PG

27 yr old IRS tax collector meets 38 yr old stable farm owner.

This is one of those slow and steady romances. There is no instalust. At least on her side. The h is not attracted to him bc he is not her "type" so it takes a very long time for her to realize what she wants.

I am a Hammond fan so I liked it.

Negatives first - book had a plot, albeit a small one without much action or intrigue, the very ending was melodramatic, and there was little sexiness involved for a romance. For the positives? A warm, endearing story that kept me reading despite small plot substance. The best thing about this book is it was unique for this type - there were no fireworks or gongs or bells, that was reserved for the wrong kind of man, cheap and dangerous lust ploys. The book showed the right kind of man made her feel safe and loved rather than excited all the time, and there was no unusual, unrealistic, eye-rolling chemistry. Nice change for once. Characters also were likeable even if they don't stand out too much.

Not up to Rosemary Hammond's usual standard. Heroine character is pretty good but the hero is less so. I ended up skimming the last half.

Przyjemna dość lekka pozycja czytelnicza. Bohaterowie bardzo dopasowani a akcja w książce udana.
