Down on her luck food delivery driver Emma thinks she'll get a $0 tip when her new client overhears her venting about her dire financial situation, but instead, he gives her $5000. Police investigator Hunter inherited a lot of money from abusive parents he hates, so he has no problem giving money to a damsel in distress. They meet up again at a club and end up spending the night together, which leads to a more-or-less casual relationship between the two, until Emma (and her BFF Jenna) end up in the middle of his human trafficking investigation, which makes Hunter and Emma realize how much they mean to each other.
This book is a mixed bag for me. The writing is good and the dialogue (especially Emma's thoughts and words) are snappy and clever. The relationship between BFFs Emma, Jenna, and Jenna's son Ollie is great, though I wish it had been expanded upon. Hunter initially comes across as arrogant and controlling. He keeps giving Emma money even when she doesn't want it. The only thing that keeps it from being unbearable is a sentence or two in the beginning about how he inherited money from his rich but abusive parents. If that had been explained in more detail, or especially if Hunter had explained that to Emma, the book would have been much better.
Like in a number of the Stoker Kindle Worlds books, balancing the romance with the action is challenging, and this one fails on that level, with the human trafficking plot on the back burner for most of the book, only to be resolved super quickly. Still, Aspen Drake is a good writer, and I hope the plots and characterizations will be more balanced in her future books, because she does have the potential to be a fabulous 5* writer.
