The license plates on Bruce Patman's Porsche read 1BRUCE1, and that's exactly how he thinks of himself - as Number One. Handsome and arrogant, Bruce is used to getting everything he wants.
Bruce's cousin Roger, who lives with the Patman family is nothing like Bruce. Roger was penniless for most of his life. He only recently found out that his late father was a Patman and that he was heir to his father's estate. Roger is still trying to adjust to his newfound wealth.
The boys have only one thing in common - their grandfather, who is one of the richest men in California. A shrewd, hardworking businessman, Mr. Patman decides to set up a contest between Bruce and Roger. The winner will inherit the grandfather's entire estate. The war is on - and Bruce will do anything to win!
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
At least in Lila's book, readers can kind of root for Lila- in this book, Bruce is a dick in so many ways, it just kind of made me hate him more. He pursues a girl who isn't even sure she's interested in him, because he sees her with a new haircut and decides he just wants her/ so he must have her, which is creepy. He doesn't seem to like his own grandfather. He is mean AF to his cousin Roger. He keeps fucking up his Porsche because he's a terrible driver. The basic plotline is forced- his grandfather comes to town and sets up a competition between him and Roger to see who can make more money from 2000 handed to them in two weeks. Like any high school kids would know wtf to do with that kind of assigment. This book wasn't good. Just...nah. Hard pass on this one.
Bruce’s Story Bruce and Roger are all anxious because their grandfather is coming to Sweet Valley to visit. Bruce has met him. Roger hasn’t. He’ll be staying with them 6 whole weeks. Bruce comments it’s scary to meet the man who made the family fortune. Roger tells him he’s always thought the old man would be fun to hang out with, and have tons of stories about his dad. Bruce tells him think again, and he’ll grill him on everything from grades to money. Roger assures him they’ll get through the visit together.
He admits to Ken and Lisa (a girl he likes but doesn’t have romantic feelings for) that he doesn’t know his grandfather that well. Only from a portrait at his house. He’s coming to get to know him and to celebrate his 70th birthday. At dinner, Alexander isn’t impressed with Bruce (looking the same). Nor is he impressed by Roger (being late). He praises Roger’s father and says he could teach them both a thing or two. White, Roger is pleased by this Bruce tries to switch the subject to his favorite subject *him* (and a tennis match he won).
Instead, Alexander wants to know about his grades and praises Roger for “developed industrious work habits”. But then he’s happy that Roger doesn’t know anything about details about the family business. Bruce does and is happy to rattle off everything he over heard his father talking about on the phone. Now, Roger’s the one unhappy. He quickly starts to see Bruce was right about his grandfather.
Alexander says he has a surprise for both of them at his party. Bruce hopes it will be a Windsurfer. He throws some hints, but his grandfather doesn’t pick up on them. He just tells him not to be extravagant. One if enough. Bruce is so busy gawking at a girl named Tracey Atkin’s new haircut, he scrapes his car, but dismisses it. It’s just a scratch. It’s not a problem to fix it. HE continues to go on and on about how he has to get with Tracey (although before, she didn’t seem like his type). He starts to investigate her and finds out she and Lisa are friends. So, he’ll get Roger to invite her to the party.
Roger says he’ll ask Lisa to invite Tracey, but Bruce has to be nice to her. That night, Bruce gets a lecture from Alexander about him nicking the car and driving more carefully. Bruce is mad at Roger for bringing up the car, and thinks two can play that game. A special assembly is called at SVH and Mr. Collin’s tells them about SAVE It was started by a group of community leaders who want to help save the Nicholson School. Nicholson is a school for special-needs children from the ages of five to twelve. Due to fiscal problems, the Nicholson School will have to close its doors at the end of this year unless ten thousand dollars is raised.
Mr. Collins says student reps will be picked to organize local events, and they’ll be voted on Monday. Because Bruce sees that Tracey is concerned, Bruce decides so is he. That weekend, Alexander continues to go back and forth between Bruce and Rogar. He lectures Bruce that Roger knows how to clean up after himself, while Bruce is spoiled. But then he frowns on Roger for his lack of interest in wanting to read the business section of the paper.
Liz, Lisa, and Tracey are picked for SAVE. Bruce congratulates Tracey, but he can tell by the way she rushes off that she’s indifferent to him. SAVE decides to set up a community market. Bruce interrupts the meeting and asks Roger (who Lisa invited) if he can borrow his car. Roger says nope. He and Lisa have plans at the beach. Take the bus. At dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Patman announce they’ll be taking a trip to Japan. They leave the day after the party and will be gone a month. Grandpa will be staying with them.
We find out Lisa has a brother in the second grade at Nicholson School. He was the reason Tracy cared so much about the SAVE project. Bruce asks Tracey to the party, and she says she’ll try. Basically, she’s into Bruce, but she’s insecure and isn’t sure why he’d like her. She’s also unsure about his reputation. At the party, Bruce makes some attempts to impress Tracey with his wealth and status (getting into a hot LA club), and is surprised that she doesn’t fall all over herself like the other girls at SVH. Alexander announces a contest. He’ll give Bruce and Roger two thousand dollars each and whoever grows the money in a month gets to be over the Patman’s cooperation.
After his parents leave, Bruce goes to town to think of someplace to take Tracey out, has another accident (totally damaging his fender). He decides he’ll just have to use some of the cash he *just* got to fix it. It turns out it’ll be 450.00 to fix the fender. He then spends 50.00 on a ticket for a reunion concert for a band that was popular 10 years ago (ah the good old days when tickets weren’t A HOUSE NOTE PAYMENT).
Roger wants to make up with Bruce, but his obnoxious attitude makes him change his mind. He also tells him he can’t borrow his car again. He’ll be going out with Lisa to the beach disco. (He lied Lisa will be driving). Bruce rides over to Tracey’s on his bike and invites her to the concert, but Tracey turns him down and tells him, “She has to babysit”. So, Bruce goes to the county club and tries to sell the tickets. He runs into a guy named Jude and tries to pawn them off on him, but he says pass. But Jude mentions a poker game coming up and Bruce says he’ll be there.
Roger finds out that Lisa’s father is an investment counselor and decides to invest his money in the stock market. Mr. DePaul warns him it's risky, but Roger says if there’s ever a time to take a risk it’s now. He gets Mr. DePaul to invest his money. On the way out, he overhears some employees talking about Robotech and decides that’s the one. Bruce tells Judd he wants to raise the stakes from one dollar to ten dollars. Judd reluctantly says he’ll ask the others. Mr. DePaul warns Roger about Robotech not being stable but Roger says he’d like to try them and buys 100.00 shares. Mr. DePaul says he’ll do it, but doesn’t look happy.
Tracey comes up with an event called Harbor Days, in which local businesses set up booths to sell things and half the proceeds (half) will go to SAVE. Liz teases Tracey about Bruce’s interest in her and Tracey confesses she likes Bruce but she doesn’t think he’s responsible (and she doesn’t trust him). Liz advises that maybe she should (if she likes him) give him a chance. At the poker game, Bruce ends up losing 800.00. Meanwhile, Roger finds out his stock has gone up to 20.00 a share but there’s a rumor that there will be a take-over and the stock could crash. He advises him to sell today. Roger tells him he wants to hang on to it.
Bruce decides he’ll sell something at Harbor Days and then he can get his money back and “help the community” (aka impress Tracey). Or he *could* just sell something somewhere else and instead of keeping 50 percent keep 100 percent. Bruce’s “bright” idea is to sell the names and numbers of the girl’s he’s dated (rolls my eyes). Tracey gets amgry. Bruce doesn’t know why. She says he should come up with a book, “The Bruce Patman Guide to Dating”. He thinks this is a great idea and asks for her help with it. She says she guesses so and Bruce thinks tip number 1.
Alexandar sees Roger looking at stock books and says he’s never thought much of taking the risk, and Roger’s glad he hasn’t told him. Bruce tells Roger about him doing something for Harbor Days and tells him about his book. Roger teases hm about his loss (told to him by Judd). Immediately after, Roger finds out the stock is dropping and people are pulling out. It’s down by 10 points. He pulls out like Mr. DePaul advises, but loses 700.00. Roger sees Lisa hanging up a poster about Harbor Days and decides if Bruce can sell something so can he.
Apparently, Bruce has a knack for writing, and Tracey compliments him on it. (Personally, it’s probably like the male version of The Rules). Bruce asks Tracey out, and this time she accepts. Tracey says she heard from Lisa that Roger is going to make “canvas caps” (caps with whatever they request painted on them) Bruce decides to sabatauge the caps.
Bruce switches Roger’s paint with water-soluble paint and is sure his grandfather will approve. At Harbor Days, Jessica warns Tracey to be careful. Even if Bruce doesn’t break her heart, he’s a creep, and she’s too good for him. Tracey doesn’t believe Bruce is as bad as Jessica says (snorts-moving on). Bruce meanwhile, is telling a little kid named Brian to start a water-balloon fight and get water all over Roger’s caps. Winston buys the first book for five dollars and finds it HILARIOUS! This gets the attention of everyone and they snap the books up.
The water fight starts, the caps start to run, people start to demand their money back. Roger is confused at how the paints aren’t the ones he bought. That is, until Bruce comes over and he already knows what’s up. Bruce goes to Tracey’s for dinner. He tells her he’s going to give his half to the SAVE project. Tracey is so moved that she tells Bruce about her brother Jeremy (which he seems uncomfortable with). She tells him she’s glad she’s getting to know him. He’s different. They kiss. Tracey thinks so this is love.
Bruce makes 500.00 from his books, but he worries that Roger is doing better in investing stocks. Roger confronts his cousin and says he found his cans in the bushes. Bruce denies it, but Roger says if he has a chance to get even with him, he’s going to. Bruce decides to get Tracey to find out from Lisa what Roger plans to sell for Harbor Days. So, he spins this story about how Roger’s going through a hard time and how he wants to help him come up with an idea, but he’s too proud to accept his help. So, the best thing to do is find out what he’s doing and find a way to help with it (without him knowing). Tracey says she’ll ask Lisa.
Tracey’s mother gives him some of her mother’s peach raspberry icecream and Bruce comes up with an idea to sell it and give all the proceeds to the Nicholason School. Bruce is like uh ok. Roger comes up with a plan to sell photos of Jim Roberts at his booth. Bruce takes Tracey on a date to Miller’s Point, and she tells what Lisa told her about Roger’s idea. Bruce hasn’t given his 50 percent to SAVE yet. Lisa tells Tracy that it wasn’t just an “accident” that Roger’s hats got ruined. Then Tracey wonders if Bruce used her to find out about Roger’s hat. Tracey confronts Bruce about why he hasn’t turned in the money. He doesn’t really give her an answer. She decides to follow Bruce the next day and get answers about her and him and him and Roger.
Bruce is making the ice cream when Roger finds him. So, now he knows where his ice cream is and what he’s selling. Bruce decides to hide out in the basement and catch Roger in the act. Roger does come downstairs. He comes toward the freezer, paused, and then walks away. Bruce thinks how stupid he is and then goes back upstairs. Tracy trails Bruce to Corner Camera and overhears him talking to the guy behind the counter about photo paper getting damaged when it’s exposed to light. He thanks the guy and now she knows what he’s up to (and about).
Tracey spies on Bruce through the window of the garden shed about to destroy the paper, and runs off. She calls Roger and tells him what Bruce did and then she hangs up the phone before he can say anything further. Then Bruce calls and she tells hm she doesn’t want to talk to him. He says he deserves an explanation. She thinks his books should have a label WARNING THIS GUY IS NOT WHAT HE PRETENDS TO BE. She says she’ll talk to him tomorrow at school, hangs up, and cries.
Tracy confronts him the next day at lunch. Bruce says he planned to ruin his cousin’s project but he couldn’t do it. He tells her about the contest. She calls the contest ridiculous and says its sad that their grandfather did it, and even sadder that they went along with it. But she doesn’t care about that. Basically, she tells him he’s selfish and its people like him that are going to cause her brother’s school to close and storms off. Bruce realizes she’s right. He’s ruined his chances with her and messed up his relationship with Roger.
Surprisingly, Roger finds his paper unharmed and then thinks oh he just hasn’t done it yet, and wishes he wishes he could have ruined his ice-cream. He’s already bought a lock for his photos. Alexander wants to plan another party to welcome his parents back. At the event, Bruce and Roger make up. Bruce buys a photo from Roger, and Roger gets ice cream from Bruce.
The SAVE committee meet and discuss the funds. They haven’t made enough. That is… until they get an anonymous envelope full of cash. Then a second donation is made for a thousand dollars. Now the school can officially stay open. Bruce goes over to Tracey’s and she says it’s not that he almost ruined the paper, it’s that he *did* sabotages his cousin’s caps and knowing that she can’t feel the same, but they can be friends. He accepts this and then invites her to the party. It’s announced that the school will stay open, but only temporarily (for another year). Liz and Tracey wonder if they’ll ever find out who the mystery doners were.
Alexander tells the guest about the contest and makes Bruce and Roger come up and opens both their envelopes. He’s astonished because they're EMPTY! Their grandfather is angry. They both tell that they donated all the money they made to SAVE. Mr. Patman (whose back) says he’s going to be the permanent donator to the school. Grandfather says they’ve made him proud and he’s been taught there’s more than one way to make money.
Rating: 5 I’ll keep this brief. I kinda expected this to be more about Bruce. This was more about a contest, a contest I was indifferent to. Because it didn’t matter to me in the slightest who won and it did all that, and NO ONE won. I thought Grandfather would at least tell them he was proud of them and the company would go to them BOTH but no. IDK kinda feels like a waste of a story. And what frustrates me is I don’t know what’s wrong with all these women at SVH. They KNOW EXACTLY who Bruce is. Everyone and their mama is friends with the twins and yet these dumb females fall for this conceited a** hole and turn a blind eye and DEAF to WHATS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM because “he can’t be as bad as they say. He’s different” How many times have we heard this? To the point now it’s just ANNOYING and I no longer feel sorry for them when he does some jerk thing and they find out. Oh well. That’s what you get for being STUPID and not believing what you hear. But they kep on and keep on and keep on falling in this trap and I just do not understand why they don’t all make a pack and just “cancel” him (as they say today). Cause I’d read that one “Bruce Gets Cancelled”

This was a fun one. Obviously nothing beats good Bruce when he was with Regina but this book was still enjoyable even though Bruce sucks. MAJOR SUCKS. It's super wild how the Wakefield twins are almost completely removed from the plot of this book-Jess doesn't factor in at all and Liz barely does, she's just the grade 11 rep for the SAVE project to save the school for disabled kids in Sweet Valley. Apparently they don't all get magically cured in Switzerland then die from cocaine. I also enjoyed exploring the relationship between Bruce and Roger because the series hasn't really touched on this since Roger became a Patman. The best twin is Jess because her one scene is her apologetically hating on Bruce (as she should) even though Bruce's latest girl (senior Tracy Atkins) is there. Highlight was Bruce learning a lesson and being nice to Roger and lowlight was the dumb competiton the grandfather created. What did he think was going to happen? He's asking for the boys to hate each other! To c
