Ember (Book 5)

Quinn O'Malley--a princess among kings.

My life was an enchanted dream.

Opulent parties.

Designer clothing.

Charming men.

But when my father dies, my glittering world implodes.

I am weak. Naked. Vulnerable.

A lamb among wolves.

My life is no longer enchanted. My life is no longer a dream.

My life is a nightmare, and my only hope is a man who's determined to fight my demons like they're his own.

Only, in the quiet of the night, I worry he isn't my savior.

He is my destruction.

Burn (Book 6)

Quinn O’Malley—a pigeon among hawks.

I believed his quiet lies.

His golden promises.

His vows of devotion.

But now I’m in his clutches. The more I struggle, the tighter his grip.

He will not let me go.

He claims I belong to him.

I never will.

I belong to one man—the man who still torments my dreams—Sasha Petrovich.

Our love is wildfire and we will burn it all to ashes.

Ashes (Book 7)

Quinn O’Malley—a queen among warriors.

I’m safe in the arms of the man I love.

We have the chance at a future, but first we have to make it through our present.

Another man has come between us; another man’s memory lingers in our bed.

He wants one thing: to see Sasha die.

Sacrifice for a sacrifice.

My life for his.

Fairy tales are for little girls.

Previously, Sasha broke Quinn’s heart by:
A) having an ongoing intense but mostly non-sexual and slightly romantic relationship with Barrett (bloody Barrett again)
B) refusing to settle into their Rochester-Jane dynamic
C) breaking up with her in a ‘go love someone else, bye’ note just before she finds out she’s pregnant.

Quinn then has more tragedy and her dad dies and he leaves his big and slightly shady construction company to her. It’s variously valued in multi millions and billions. Quinn doesn’t know anything about building buildings but she takes a half hearted crack at it. She meets this hot Italian guy and he big time negs her but she gives him a chance anyway. She’s into his body but not his heart, since she’s still in love with Sasha.

This book/trilogy could have been good. We could have had a story about Quinn becoming boss lady, and had her sort of nice emerging relationship turn dark and intense and dangerous, but no. This book/s is more Barrett and I was pretty done with Barrett in her 2nd book in the SINS volume because she’s a messy character who would have been best served by a fade into a vaguely happy ending.

The whole SINS series is ... ok. Medium to low ok. It goes on too long and rehashes plot lines and doesn’t fully develop its villains and assumes one of its villains is more interesting than he actually is. The sex prose is of the ‘now its in, bam bam bam’ variety and the romance is blah. Barrett was interesting for a book and a half as a woman becoming an underworld queen figure, but the exploration of what that means and what it means for her relationship with Flynn is superficial.

There’s also this underlying oddness to the way organised crime is treated in the plot. I’d read ‘Peasants and Kings’ first and while I thought the title was terrible, I wasn’t prepared for SINS to be a Scottish terrorist group in some weird parallel world.

SINS is first introduced to Barrett as Scotland’s IRA and she’s given the choice to not support terrorists which she rejects because she’s in love with the boss terrorist. And maybe it actually isn’t terrorism, because ‘the violence’ and the struggles are only mentioned in the vaguest of ways, and the one major act of terrorism is glossed over and was set up to blame the group anyway. Barrett is never particularly interested in the cause, it’s all about the men who aren’t particularly interested in whether women agree with their politics and approach.

Then the organised crime is about raising money for the cause, but also making sure that the rich leaders of the cause are prominently rich, and they are possibly the good guys because they don’t human traffic.

This whole idea that organised crime is harmless and polices itself and only really exists because governments are mean about how a bunch of men sometimes want to make money is ridiculous. Several times in this series, it’s pointed out that Quinn is cool about money laundering. She won’t do it because she doesn’t know how, but it’s fine along with whatever else, and isn’t wilful ignorance a sexy quality in a romantic lead?

Quinn could have been interesting if she was actually doing stuff with her legacy. The first book spends more time on her having a cold than taking action as a boss. She fires an employee who doesn’t like her and vaguely tells an architect to make a luxury residential project more luxe. How groundbreaking.

Sasha could have been more interesting if over half his chapters weren’t him observing Barrett being interesting. And when this started bleeding into Quinn’s chapters it’s all pretty much over. Actually, it’s really over for him when he tries to make it look like Quinn not telling him she was pregnant is just as bad as him breaking up with her in such a brutal and final way. When permitted to be something other than Quinn’s shadow he’s still pretty awful.

The thing is, I’m not against a book series that follows a strong woman through a series that tracks her rises and falls in power and her complicated romantic entanglements. Is she in love with some hot guy, or is she just in survival mode? Is she in love with another hot guy, or does she simply want to have sex with him for a while and move on? What’s she going to do when the power she didn’t want but was forced to take is challenged, and she’s defending it largely alone? Does she want to carry a love of the century torch for another guy who isn’t around for 80% of the books? All these things are fine, but what frustrates me is when it’s stealthed into another character’s less messy and dramatic romance because neither plot has a chance of being satisfying.

Emma Slate is turning out to be an awesome author (IMO), I have now read all there is to offer and I love her writing.
As it says in the blurb, although not absolutely necessary I would recommend reading SINS first and trust me it will be worth it.
As far as Ember is concerned we delve yet again into the world of organised crime where the wrong word or whose inner circle you mix with could cost you dearly. Quinn has been through some tough times and they haven't finished yet. Sasha is fighting his own demons and Ori is fighting for revenge. However things are not always as they seem, who can Quinn trust, can she even trust herself? There are many twists and turns in this series and hold onto your hat it's a fast dangerous ride.
It was great to catch up with some favourites from SINS series, the characters in both these series really do stick with you.
Great writing and if you enjoyed SINS and this is an excellent spin off. When you've done you might like to read Web of Innocence, this is a great start to a paranormal series.

Doozy

I'll do everything I can to not ruin this but just in case
**SPOILER ALERT**

I mean seriously could sasha be any more perfect?!

This set did not go the way I thought it would go at all. Between the good, the bad and the down right awful events it ended in the best way it could have.

There were some moments where I was like 'AHHHH!! YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!' and others where I was like 'YESS! GO GO GO!' So many things happened and there were little hints along the way that led to the 'big bang'. If you really pay attention, you knew it was coming.
I liked that Quinn never truly became who she knew she'd never love. She can live with the actions of what she had done but she didn't want to push those boundaries to become something she wasn't.

This set was a lot of hate mixed in with a bunch of rage with healthy doses of love, compassion and strength.
Overall, I'm happy with it. I'm glad it ended the way I did and I found myself wanting more, but not really NEEDING it.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

OMG what a absolutely fab set of books. I think I have experienced every emotion with this Epic series. This is Sasha and Quinn's story.
After getting badly burned an feeling he has become a burden to Quinn Sasha leaves a note telling her to forget him and move on with her life.
A long time passes and Quinn meets Ori who makes it very clear that he wants her. After a Rocky start she feels her heart start to awaken.
Ori is handsome, smart, and totally into her.
But is Ori what he seems?
This book has me on the edge of my seat. I can honestly say Emma Slate knows how to keep you hooked.
In the down side I am gutted that I finished this series as I feel I've lost my new best friends.
MORE, MORE, MORE please xx

Awesome - but you HAVE to read SINS first!

That Slate woman CAN write!! If you love GOOD, well written characters, stories you can sink your teeth into, stories that enthrall and captivate your mind, that worry your soul - these two sets of stories - you will LOVE! You'll have a book hangover, you'll be groggy at work but you will not be sorry you did!
Thank you for your time, talent and the STORIES!

Be prepared for your jaw to drop open and your heart to crack a few times. Slate definitely knows how to keep her readers on their toes.

I have read this book 3 times now because I just can't get enough of Sasha. Barrett and Flynn are likeable enough, but Slate introduced Sasha into the mix and ruined my life forever. It's impossible to not fall in love with everything about him. How can you not love a sexy, brooding Russian man? Those Slavic cheekbones and those icy blue eyes? Its been months and I still have dreams about Sasha.

Sasha is my Favorite!!!

I liked this series even more than the Sins series. Sasha was one of my favorite characters from the first series, so was excited to read his & Quinns story. The first book was only in Quinn’s perspective, but the second & third had both Sasha & Quinn’s. This series was well written with enough twists & turns to keep you on your toes.

Loved this series just as much as the SINS series. Full of tugs on my heartstrings, laughter, danger, suspense, and love. So happy with the path Sasha and Quinn took. It made for deep character development and making them feel even more "real" to me. Definitely worth the read!

Wow. The story carries on in these books. The Quinn and Sasha saga carries on. The aftermath of the fire that hurt him, the way he felt with his recovery and what happened to Quinn. I loved these books and only wish there was more.
