The Winning Team
Class elections are coming up and Sabs is finding it hard to keep her mind off it. The GT friends think Stacey will be the class president. Stacey is at the next table announcing Eva Malone will be her running mate. Randy interrupts her speech that says when I get to be class president. Stacey says there is no competition. That’s when Sabrina gets up and announces that *she’ll* be running for class president. They all plan to meet at Fitz’s to come up with a campaign strategy.

At Fitz’s, Stacey comes over and “wishes Sabrina luck”. This throws her off and intimidates Sabrina, but her friends remind her she’s not doing it alone. Randy is appointed campaign and relations manager, Katie gets appointed as the campaign secretary and Allison gets presidential advisor. To Sabrina’s horror they all choose Sam as her Vice President. Word spreads quickly at Fitz’s. Stacey to outdo them says that whoever votes for her gets free ice cream. Sabrina thinks how could she ever top that.

After spewing spaghetti on Sabrina after she announces their campaign to their family, Sam vows to Sabrina he’ll take the campaign more seriously because he really thinks they can make a difference (and he knows she’ll really wants to win). The next day, Sabrina decides to wear her hair in a low ponytail (like Paul Reveries) and wear the Bradly school colors (orange and black). She just looks weird. She has on a black skirt, orange tights, black boots, and a top with vegetables. Sam however has on blue, stripped, baseball pants, a red shirt, and a top hat that says UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU TO VOTE WELLS. Stacey comes over and tells her this means war. Then she holds up a pen and says by next week it’ll have her name on it and everyone will have on (Uh Grat gift Stacey. A ballpoint pen. Like they can’t buy that at Walmart_/ Sabrina is envious (over what I’m not sure). Eva asks what they’re giving out and Katie says it’s a surprise. (SMH that’s REALLY not much to top). But ithe surprise is there isn’t one yet.

At Al’s they have their first campaign meeting. They decide on a platform. Better trips, gym equipment, and better library books. Then Randy says they need to come up with a poster. At school, there’s a rally. They all wear red, white, and blue. They make their theme “Let's GET SERIOUS ABOUT BRADLEY” At the rally, Stacey and her friends were matching (better) outfits. Sabrina gets an idea after hearing Winslow’s opinion poll. She gets the school’s sound system to plug in her Walman to play her theme song (the Rocky theme song). There’s an issue with the microphone and Winslow can’t hold the earphones and take pictures. So, she gets a first aid kit and she tapes the earphones to the mic with gauze. Stacey does a really bad rap song but the crowd gets into it. The crowd goes wild when the GT girls comes in with their banner and Sam with his flag. Sam makes a really good speech and so does Sabrina.

Sam is starting to get a little cocky so they decide to get Winslow to talk to him and Sam’s friends (Nick and Jason) to help. At their next meeting, they all work on the posters and get ten done. Of course, Stacey’s posters look professional. Sabrina’s friends tell her she has the better ideas and that’s what counts. Still everyone’s wearing Stacey’s buttons. Randy has an idea they can work with using Sabrina’s dad tool shop. They call a meeting at Sabrina’s house.

They use their imagination to come up with hardware gimmicks with catchy slogans and they’re a hit. Everything is original. Soon there are no Stacey buttons in sight. Because Stacey takes off after lunch, they all worry that she has something sneaky planned. They want Winslow to try to find out what she’s up to but Randy says he hasn’t found out anything. Randy says she’s just trying to play mind games and she’s got nothing left so she’s trying to drive her crazy. Before the debate, Sabrina’s mom gives her a B (Bradley) pin. It’s the pin her father gave her when he asked her to go steady.

At the debate, Sam overuses the word serious but everyone loves him. Before she knows it the debate is over. Sabrina and Sam win the campaign!

My Thoughts:
This was the obligatory book in the series about someone running for a student election. It was just about as “good” as the others (which is to say not really). Sabrina is getting weirder and weirder asd weirder each book. What is she going for Claudia Kishi’s look in this one? The whole thing with them trying to outdo Stacey is getting repetitive. THEY ALWAYS DO! Switch it up sometimes and let her actually WIN for a change so there can be a little back and forth. It really isn’t a competition if the “good side” always wins. But then I guess that’s the message, isn’t it? The one thing I did think was clever was using the tools as gimmicks. Although it’s beyond me why seventh graders would want any of this stuff. Although the nuts and bolts jewelry was creative. Maybe the flashlights. It *WAS* better than just giving someone a pen tho. I thought OH COME ON! A BALLPOINT PEN? PLEASE! Stacey, you can do WAY BETTER than that. You had PROFESSIONAL pictures taken! The pins COULD have been cute. It depends. I had a pin once with my picture on it. When I look at it I kinda cringe because I didn’t like the picture, but she could have asked for her classmate's photos and put then on pins and wrote I VOTED FOR STACEY. The pen idea could have worked if maybe the pens were the kind back then that had glitter in them or maybe do you remember the pens that had hearts and boats and whatnot that floated? Maybe if she had flags or floating B’s (for Bradly). But at least there was some originality. Mostly it’s been my experience that these (campaign) books tend to be on the boring side. To prove my point there was some unnecessary stuff in to stretch it out that I didn’t even add to the review (like the glitter accident Sam had in the garage)
