What do you do when you and your best friend like the same boy?
When a gorgeous Canadian boy moves to Acorn Falls and joins the Bradley Junior High hockey team, life suddenly turns pretty interesting for Katie Campbell--especially when she discovers that her best friend, Sabrina, has a crush on the new boy.
Mixed Feelings Katie is in the dressing room where someone is spying at her through the peephole. She gets the peeping tom back (Scottie) by spraying water at him. Katie laces up her skates and thinks about the new skates she hopes she’ll get as a present for her upcoming birthday. At practice, she and the rest of team are surprised to find out they have a new addition to the team from Canada (Michel Beauvais. He doesn’t even have to try out because he was an MVP on his team last year, Katie and the rest of the guys don’t think this is right. All of the guys kind of avoid him during practice, but Katie can see why he was MVP. At the end of practice tho, the guys are more accepting of him. As the boys talk shop, they mention a great play K.C. made. M Michel is shocked to find out K.C. is a girl. Katie thinks great another guy she’ll have to prove herself to. But if the guys can be friendly.
After practice, she meets up with Sab and they head for her house. Michel catches up with them and makes the conversation about school and meeting his neighbors. Sabs is smitten and Katie realizes she likes him too and is relieved that she won’t have to prove herself. Katie notices something is up because all her friends are acting suspiciously. Sab's mother even mentions finding a recipe but when she sees Katie she shoves it in her pocket. They all start to talking about Michel. Sab's mother talks about a French guy that she’d met years ago. Then she invites them all to dinner. Allison has to get home to celebrate her father’s birthday. Katie sees Randy slip her a piece of paper. Katie tries to call her mom and thinks its weird she’s not there. Sam and his friends show up and ask Katie about a big game coming up and Katie says with the new player they got they’ll have a big advantage.
The next day at school, Katie thinks about winning the big game and Michel. He then shows up in English class and is seated next to Katie. He doesn’t have a book so they have to share one. He asks can he eat with them and Katie says it's cool. After class, she introduces him to Randy. Katie tries to find out why her friends were acting strange, but Michel shows up. The guys ask Micheal to sit with them, but he says he’s already promised the girls. This makes Scottie glare at him and Katie. Katie decides that Michel isn’t so bad. He apologizes for being rude but he says he was just surprised. The girls at his old school had their own team.
Katie is shocked when she gets home and finds that her mother has gotten a makeover (perm, red dress and pumps, fingernails done). Emily says something is up and they have to find out what (or who) caused this change. At dinner, Emily keeps prying and she finds out she helped a man with his mortgage. Emily puts two and two together and thinks they’re mom has met a man. She says she invited (this man?) over. (A man she meets at the bank).
On Saturday, Katie gets the skates for her birthday. Then she goes to the pond to skate (thinning of her dad). Michel is there. Interestingly he knows when her birthday is. He says Sabs told him. He talks of home (his team, his pond). Katie gets a little offended that he’s trying to say his old team is better but she sees he’s just playing. Then they talk about beating the Mongols. Katie has to go meet up with the others for brunch. Miguel tells her she and her friends are nice and he’s glad he meet such nice people. As they go, the conversation turns to how Katie got to be so good and she says her dad. Mentioning him makes her feel a little down. Michel apologizes.
Scottie is obnoxious to Katie before the game starts. He wants to know if her new friend got her the skates. The Mongols play a rough game. Katie takes a bad hit and falls on her face. The doctor has to come check her out. On examination, Katie’s split her lip and her cheek is bruised. Now everything is starting to ache. Katie will need stitches in her chin. Katie kind of zones out after this and the next thing she knows she’s at home in bed.
The next day even though Katie looks horrible, she finds out that her team won. She finds out from her mom everyone called the night before worried about her. Katie’s friends come over and Sabs gives her a recount of what happened. Scott became enraged and starts taking it out on everyone in the game. Katie says she doesn’t think Scottie likes her anymore because he thinks Michel is her boyfriend. He even thinks he gave her the skates. Then she has to convince Sab she doesn’t like Michel. Sabs thinks Scottie just got mad because she got hurt because he likes her. After that, Katie remembers her mother is having that man over for dinner and she doesn’t cancel. Her mom says she’ll understand if she’s not up to it, but she wants her to try.
Katie is surprised to find Michel shows up. It turns out the man at the bank is Michel’s father. For some reason Katie gets mad, but then gets happy when when she hears they all try to win the game for her. But then she gets mad again. She can’t believe her mother didn’t tell her. She must have known Michel was on the team with her. She’s introduced to his father and finds out from him he thinks Sab is cute. Emily and Katie are kind of quiet throughout dinner. Later, they agree they like Michel’s dad but that doesn’t mean they want their mother dating another man. Katie thinks she’ll just have to wait and see what happens with her mom and Jean-Paul.
Katie decides to go to school the next day. She doesn’t think she can lie around thinking about Jean-Paul, Scottie, and Michel. She clearly SHOULD have stayed home. Again, her friends are acting weird. (Sighing. REALLY KATIE?) Coach gets on Scottie for his out-of-control behavior and asks if Katie has something to do with it but he denies it. Coach warns him not to let it happen again. All the guys wonder what’s up with Scottie.
Michel calls Sab to find out what’s wrong with Katie. Sab says she should call her and ask if he likes her. He says he does like her just not in that way. He’s just wondering what changed Sunday night. Then he tells Sabs about his dad seeing her mother. Sab says that’s why. He doesn’t understand why this is a problem. He usually doesn’t like the woman’s kids (if she has kids) but he likes K.C. and her friends. He says he hopes she’ll be at the next game. Sabs is upset and calls Allison (and she tells Randy) that she wasn’t told. Sab tries to call Katie but she doesn’t go into anything (even though Sab says she can talk to her about anything). It’s Katie’s birthday again .. *YEAH IM CONFUSED TOO*. Katie goes to the pond again and thinks about Scottie. Then Allison shows up. Allison gives her a talk about taking things out on Michel and how her father would want her mother to be happy. Katie says it’s “too soon” but Al points out it’s been THREE YEARS. Katie knows she’s right. Her dad would want her mom to be happy and even if she marries this other guy that wouldn’t make her stop loving her father. But Katie is depressed that she’s 13 years old and no one has said anything to her about her birthday. When she gets home, everyone jumps out and yells SURPRISE! It was her friend's idea to give her a surprise party. The guys on the team are there and give Katie her own hockey jacket. She also gets a new hockey stick from her mom’s boyfriend. Katie apologizes to Michel and he says it’s not a problem.
Scottie pulls Katie to the side and tells her he was jealous. He tells her that he stopped asking her out because he knows his feelings would distract him if she got hurt. But when she did get hurt he realized he does still like her. He then kisses her and asks her to go to the movies.
My Thoughts: This is the kind of book I don’t really care for but it’s WAY to much (sports) gameplay description. I kind of wondered for a minute why this is included in a teen (pr pre-) teen girl’s series. Even in “female” series the author feels obligated to include some kind of sports activity. I guess they figure it would get pretty boring if all the girls did in the series was talk about boys, clothes, their hair, and makeup. But then I guess there are some teen girls out there who might really be into this that might like the in-depth hockey games.
Then it was VERY strange that Katie has TWO birthdays. Was this an error that just didn’t get edited? If it wasn’t shouldn’t it had been explained why her mother gave her the skates (weeks? Days?) before her real birthday. Was it because she wanted to give her the skates *before* the big game? Then now I guess because I've read so many books about how the friends and family act suspicious and it always turns out to be a surprise party, I just kind of roll my eyes because it's obvious. But then I've never had a surprise party so maybe I'd be thinking the same thing (Why is everyone acting so weird lately?) Knowing me I'd probably ask my family "Are you throwing me a surprise party or something?"
Then also in these books, it’s the same story. The daughter (or kid) never likes the new person and they turn out to be nice. TRUST ME! I’ve been THERE! But, what I had to understand (and I understood it too late) was that as you get to be an adult it gets harder to find a good person. So, even though sometimes it’s hard to adjust if your parent finds a good person it might take some adjusting but they’re people too with needs. And sometimes if you keep an open mind you might just develop a bond with the new person you would have never even thought you’d have. It was SO cool that Jean Luc gave Katie the hockey stick. Sometimes the parent's new partners, give the BEST presents. I’m telling you!
