The Ellwood Chronicles #1

The Enchanter's Flame

Rate this book
Strange things are happening all around Brinnswick. Things that remind me of a piece of my past I’d rather forget. Girls are being killed, drained of blood, and left with strange markings on their bodies. When I finally connect the cases together, a specialist is called in—though, what he’s a specialist of is beyond me.

When the chief assigns him as my new partner for the case, I can’t help but groan on the inside. Why of all people would I be assigned to Ailin Ellwood? The man is a disaster waiting to happen and a jerk to boot. A sexy jerk, but a jerk nonetheless.

What will Sebastian think when he discovers Ailin’s specialty? Will he make a run for it or will he stick around and discover a world of magic hidden beneath the city’s surface?

***The Enchanter’s Flame is the first book in the Ellwood Chronicles. It’s a paranormal romance that contains explicit material and is intended for mature adults 18 and over.***

Michele Notaro

Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.

She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

4 The Sage and His Soulmate Stars

My first read by this author and what an enjoyable one! Michele Notaro created such an interesting world. I’m not really into magic but I really liked this world with its people (witches) in it. Both characters were likable but I liked Ailin a bit more, especially his possessiveness over Sebastian. I enjoyed their banter, a lot. Told mostly in single POV, 1st person. It’s the first installment in "The Ellwood Chronicles" and is cliffy (book 2 is out). It’s well-written, slow burn, low on angst with a good amount of sexual tension between MCs. Overall, I had a good time reading this and hope you enjoy it as well!

That was some simplistic, unsophisticated writing, which minimized any potential enjoyment of the story. When a book becomes a chore to read, I move on.

The plan for this week was to read only short books because of work and reduced attention span. So I thought I'd start this series and read book 0.5 until I realized something couldn't be right, so I reread the blurb. Stupid if you don't do that ... very stupid of me. You have to read 0.5 after 1.0. Really important. But since I was already hooked, I had to read this book. Because the story is so interesting that you can hardly look away.
Still, this is my first book by this author and I don't know if every one will be like this, I hope not, because even though the story itself is really good and I'm just too curious about the events, it's not exactly great writing.
This is probably mainly because everything is told from Sebastian's point of view and my goodness, his head is an annoyingly stupid place. I don't know if it's wise for authors to put their characters through so much stupidity. I really like Sebastian, but his babbling was so exhausting. And his annoyed sniping with Ailin is sooooo annoying. They are constantly arguing about the same things and you can't really connect with Ailin.

He was irritating me beyond belief. I was pretty sure he only did it to piss me off, so I didn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing my reaction. I sat in my chair and watched his little ass move around the room with my hands behind my head. 🤭

“Wow, you’re the biggest egotistical dickhead I’ve ever met. You just insulted my entire species. So sorry we’re not all big bad witches. So sorry we’re not all great and powerful like the mighty Ailin Talamh Ellwood.” My voice was dripping with sarcasm. 🙄

“Watch it or I will hex you.” 🤣

Only very, very late on do you get a few more insights and can understand why Ailin is the way he is. And as for the romantic side of the story, well, there are only tiny glimpses of that too. Seb and Ailin have a connection, but it's never really explained, which is once again frustrating. The little bit that develops between them is almost worthless, because you're still stuck in Seb's stupid head and he just doesn't understand the world anymore.

I love magic! Anything from unicorns and necromancers to fae and witches! Every author always creates something new and unique and this time it's no exception. This book has a very good world-building, well-developed characters and isn't cluttered with sex. There is plenty UST and denying of one's feelings but it blends well into the book and enhances the characters. (Don't worry, lovers of smut, there are hot and bothering moments to tide you over until the next book) I like that this is not insta kind of book. The relationship or beginning thereof is a work in a progress. This book is filled with humor, sarcasm and cute little animals that become characters in their own right.

Sebastian is a war veteran who works as a police detective. He is a loner, an orphan that has no ties to anyone and he kind of prefers it that way except that his past is riddled with bad memories of those who left him either voluntary or through death and he feels unwanted. When strange murders come up on his radar he is partnered with mysterious Ailin, a goth looking arrogant brat, who tests his patience but elicits forbidden thoughts of desire and longing. Ailin is a wild card, not much is known about him in the beginning except for his bad attitude and strange things happening around and with him. Oh, lets not forget a ferocious kitten Sera and a friendly snake George and a cute rat Mathilda and the Scooby gang is complete. They banter non-stop and it's so hilarious, full of spirit and edged on subtle flirting. I loved the talks they had, how they got to each other. But what was even more precious were the tender moments and looks that Ailin gave Seb. They were golden. There was a glimpse of vulnerability behind all the arrogance and bravado.

In the end Ailin is not what he seems - he is so much more. I loved him and his bossy attitude. I loved how he cared for his family, how he cared for Seb. Seb is a little flighty, I might say, when it comes to his feelings to Ailin but when he finally accepts them there is no stopping him from caring and protecting Ailin. The murders are gruesome and a little bit scary but Ailin with the help of fellow witches finally catches up to the murderer and those who guide him and both men fight for their lives. The battle is epic, fearsome and full of magical powers crackling in the air. I loved it.

The conclusion leaves so much for imagination and I anticipate an even better sequel. This new magical world just pulled me in and now I am hooked! Ms Notaro, please hurry and give us the next one before I expire from impatience and magical hangover!!! Highly enjoyed read and highly recommended!!!!

Not sure what this author has more trouble with: grammar ("he kneeled down and pet the cat"), world-building (it's modern-day US, but it's named something else), concept of magic (Ailin can apparently do anything), or definition of mystery (as in there should be one). The second MC is a bit of a blank oaf as well (never questions if Ailin is actually reading his mind, never seems to wonder what happened to his parents - at least not in the first 50% that I sort of got through).
There was nothing there to keep me reading. Nothing.

The only thing I'm feeling towards either MC and the story is annoyance, so I'm putting a pin in it.

Sebastian whines and complains constantly and at the 25% mark I still know nothing about Ailin, except that he's pushy and a bit of a bully. I need more than that to get my interest, much less keep it.

Interesting start

Sebastian is a detective working for the BCA. He is assigned to a new partner on a case where numerous bodies of young females keep popping up. Each case seems to have a distinct trade mark making Sebastian believe it is a serial murder, however, his new partner has other ideas. Ailin Ellwood is a specialist that is about to open Sebastian's eyes to whole new world he never knew existed.
The second half of this book was much better than the first. If you can get passed the fact the MC, who is a 35 year old detective, sounds and thinks like a teenage girl you'll be alright.
This seems like a promising series and I hope the stories improve as they move along.

One of those books that leave me undecided, unsure if I like it or not and if I ever come to liking it I'm not entirely sure why. Oh, it's a big festival of bickering and some banter, even a little snark thrown into and that counts, that a counts a lot and there is one of my favorite themes showing a hidden world of magic and paranormal creatures parallel to the human one and I enjoyed the writing style which kept me reading and reading and reading but then there is Sebastian ... nice guy, really, but I just don't get him ... like at all. I don't see him as an detective (takes ages until he starts to realize that Ailin is reading his mind and then he's trusting nearly everyone because of gut feelings) nor as an emphatic being (has to be reminded that a mutilated guy was found in his bed) and I can't help it: I don't believe in the romance between him and Ailin. There is supposed to be so much big emotions - not only between him and Ailin - but I couldn't feel one. In the end it all came back to the bickering and banter and to a kitten named Serafina and a snake named George.

I was torn about whether or not to post a review for this book. I do not like leaving reviews with three stars or less but the longer I thought about it, the more I leaned towards sharing the truth, as I see it. I believe that other readers should be equipped with sufficient knowledge to enable them to make an informed decision as to whether or not to buy a book. I read a lot of the reviews posted, and it would seem that I read a different book than those reviewers.
It took me six days to read this book. Six days. I would find myself staring off into space, forgetting that I was reading. I nodded off countless times. Why did I finish, you might ask? After a certain point, it was like a marathon that I had invested so much time in that I just HAD to finish. It was a difficult process though.
The premise of the book is sound. The implementation is not.
The characters are one dimensional and boring. The main characters are like a couple of pre-teens in their interactions and dialogue. Sebastian is particularly clueless and annoying in his lack of intelligence and deductive skills. His back story would make you assume that he is intelligent and strong, but that is not how the author wrote him. Ailin is touted as the strongest witch in the world, but saying so and showing are two totally different things. And the authors’ decision for Ailin to withhold practically all information from Sebastian had me grinding my teeth throughout the book.
I don’t recommend this book. Maybe with a lot of rewrites it could be something to write a glowing review for, but as it is I give it 2 ½ stars for the conception of the premise and the interest of a couple of the secondary characters.

Storyline - 5 Stars
Narration - 4.5 Stars (Narrated by Kenneth Obi)

This was my first completed audiobook ever! Super proud of myself. I sat there for two hours trying to find a book and the audio sample of this one hooked me in.

This story was amazing. I'm a sucker for detectives/partners being into each other and Notaro did this relationship perfectly. It was slow burn and gentle and just how I would expect a relationship to develop. Sebastian was a lovely MC to read about and his naivety to the magical world was perfect; I loved his inner monologues too. Ailin was originally presented as an asshole, but he quickly lost that and I loved him! He was so, so good and soft with Sebastian, my heart was melting.

The storyline was really intriguing and kept me riveted - murdered individual's in a ritualistic way. Throughout the storyline, we were given tidbits of information so I didn't feel overwhelmed with learning this new paranormal world, but enough was given to understand as everything unfolded.

On a sidenote, I love, love, loved the animal aspect that has been woven into this. The respect Ailin shows animals and ultimately teaches Sebastion is beautiful (vegetarian here and an animal lover so was just a sweet aspect of the story I adored).

You'll love this if you're a fan of partners being romantically involved with each other, detective work, a Supernatural world living within our own, MM romance and love animals in your stories.

"How in the hell did I wind up in my car with an asshole, a cute kitten, and a creepy as fuck snake? That sounded like the beginnings of a bad joke."

I loved this! Full of snark, magic, danger, and a slow-burn romance, this book hit all my buttons. I really loved the characters, Sebastian especially, and the 1st person narration worked perfectly to keep the audience in the dark about magic and supernatural creatures. Seb's narration allows the reader to make discoveries along with him as he learns about magic and everything Ailin shows him.

Seb was my favorite character and I really enjoyed being in his head. His insecurities were heartbreaking to read but I loved that insight into his character.

The banter between Ailin and Seb is hilarious and I really enjoyed their dynamic as they begin their new partnership. Car rides with them were so entertaining to read, especially when you add Sera and George!

This was a great new series from Michele Notaro and I can't wait for the next book to come out so we can learn more about the reveals at the end of this book!

Though the storyline was fascinating, it read a little too YA for my tastes. The narrator made the MC a bit too whiny, though that could have been due to the writing. Not sure I'll be continuing on with the series.

The Enchanter’s Flame was a bit of a muddle. Some parts were intriguing and even enjoyable. And others sections had me wanting to bang my head against a wall. Even several days after finishing it, I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Sebastian and Ailin both have strong personalities that come through clearly. There isn’t much backstory on either of them, but there’s a prequel coming so at the very least Ailin’s past will be more fully developed at some point. Theirs tends to be an antagonistic relationship with a lot of sniping and, at least on Ailin’s part, a lot of evading or hiding of really important information. And this is my first issue with the book. Ailin often makes huge decisions that will affect Fitz, but doesn’t bother talking him about them. He reads Fitz’s mind without permission and never seems to consider this an issue. He also binds Fitz to him magically without asking first. These are life altering choices and Fitz has no input or way to defend himself. And Fitz puts up token arguments, but never really confronts Ailin on these issues in a meaningful way. These were huge private and personal violations that felt glossed over or even brushed aside.

Wow.
Magic, Witches, Vampire, Werewolf, Soulmates.... What's not to love!!!
Well, the fact that now I have to wait for what's next... That's what!

So this is told from Sebastian PoV.
Sebastian is human (or is he?...) He works as a cop. Dead bodies are piling in and he starts to see a pattern so he decides to talk to his boss... And then enters Ailin... 'Consultant' for all strange cases. Sebastian doesn't really know him but he heard about him and when he finally see him... Well...

description

He's very confuse about everything and very arouse about his new partner...
Nothing makes sense but he goes with the flow until finally Ailin tell him the big secret... He's a witch, the most powerful witch and every creature you read about are real... Oh and by the way, our killer is a demon...

I really love Ailin and Sebastian together. I was so surprise. I didn't expect to like it so much... I feel a long series with a lot of books to come but I don't care. I'm all in!!!

I finished this, but just barely. There are the bones here of a great story set in a potentially interesting world. Unfortunately, the execution was clumsy and juvenile, with the barest sketches of characters whose reactions were consistently over the top without any real reason. I have no idea what Sebastian looks like, other than he is taller than Ailin and has a darker complexion, and the fact that it took Sebastian two-thirds of the book to realize that Ailin could hear his thoughts was just ridiculous.

Every page was littered with fuck, fucking, ass, asshole, asswipe, asshat (really?!?), freaking, pissed, and chuckled. The vulgarity was no substitution for actual wit, and how two people can chuckle that many times in the course of a week is beyond me. I rolled my eyes on almost every page, and almost threw the book out the window when I read the phrase "kinda like" outside of quoted speech. The only reason I kept going was because the outline of the story was so interesting. I am terribly disappointed in the actual writing - it reminded me of a tone-deaf
person singing a song I love at karaoke.

“I will always protect you, no matter what I have to protect you, just like I know you’d protect me. We’re parters, right?”

2.5⭐

There's some promise in this urban fantasy story but it was clunky and repetitive. Sebastian is the only detective finding all these murders around yet he is completely oblivious about all the supernatural elements, which could be explained by but he has had actual experience encountering magical powers before so I just don't get how he can be so baffled.

Some of the clunky things include the initial nightmare sequence which felt cringey and cliché, starting sentences with 'unfortunately' in places it didn't really make sense, and things like Sebastian wondering how did a coroner remember a specific fricking drained body two weeks after autopsy. Like, how much murder happens in this town?

Similarly the mystery plot was very glossed over, there were just nameless bodies everywhere, it felt a bit disrecpectful tbh how little anyone seemed to care. Ailin even prioritises Sebastian's panic attack to checking if a found victim is still alive.

I was frustrated and the book felt a bit like a chore but I still managed to get through it so there was something going on that prevented a DNF. Even with the repetitiveness I sort of liked this bickering couple. And while the end game is predictable, I admit I still enjoyed the last chapters (except for the epilogue but I hate like half of them anyway).

With a lot of trimming and editing this book could actually be good, though still pretty generic. I have so many awesome books to read, I think I won't bother continuing with this series with the hopes of improvement.

I love paranormal stories. With magic and paranormal creatures, authors have the potential to create a world that’s unique and fun. LGBTQ+ books that aren’t contemporary are pretty rare. So when I saw this, I had to pick it up!

Sebastian is a police officer who is stumbling upon some really weird murder cases. Cases he can’t completely figure out. When he gets assigned a “specialist” for a partner, he finds himself in a whole new and bizarre world. With girls being murdered all around Brinnswick, it’s up to Ailin and Sebastian to stop them.

Sebastian is one of the cutest human beings to ever walk the earth. I loooooved him! He’s adorable, curious, and kind of clueless sometimes. Ailin is the opposite. Confident, bossy, and kind of a jerk. They make such a great pair though! I think they bring out the best in each other, and they really balance each other out. It’s a slow burn romance, so seeing them slowly develop feelings felt really authentic.

There’s a lot of mystery and suspense surrounding the killings, it really keeps you on your toes and makes for an entertaining plot. The side characters bring in a lot of humor and some drama to the story. I’d definitely want to see books from them, and you have your cute pets in the story as well.

I think the second book should be out soon, and it still focuses on Sebastian and Ailin. I’m so excited to see what else is next for these characters. This books is what I consider a hidden gem, I hope more people pick it up because you’re guaranteed a fun ride!

I always hesitate to low star books from small authors because I also work in an industry where reviews effect my income so I have been avoiding reviewing anything but.....

With this book?
I just can't.

It is to very rare to find a m/m book with a POC main character so I eagerly grabbed the whole series.
To my misfortune.

The author has the bones of a good story but.... the story lacks depth, the writing style is juvenile at best, I'm sure the witch MC has a black male fetish based in meeting their last ex, and they made the black male MC basically an idiot. Think of a sexy Terry Crews. Now think if him with the brain of a 10 year old.
No initiative, almost a bumbling helpless maiden type then throw in a lot of "ass, asswipe, asshole" jokes. You get the picture.

I am so disappointed in this book that I don't really have much else to say except to apologize to the lgbtqa+ black men out there who come across this book in hopes of seeing a representation of themselves in m/m literature.
I am sorry.
You deserve better brothers.

This just didn’t work for me. The narrator for the audio made Sebastian sound whiny and naive. The romance part of the story took a hard right turn from animosity to instalove and it just didn’t make sense to me. And the plot was a bit too convoluted without enough backstory. Not sure if I will continue with the series.

Detective Sebastian Fitz, a recent transplant to the Central borough, is concerned about a new case he's been assigned to. An apparent ritualistic murder of a college girl ending with her body branded with a symbol and drained of blood. More concerning is that it isn't the first such case requiring Detective Fitz to report his finding to his superior, Chief Gillman.

This starts a chain of events that culminates in Sebastian gaining a new partner, Ailin Ellwood. Tall, dark, antisocial, and sexy, Goth guy Ailin apparently has experience in solving peculiar unorthodox cases though many feel he's too creepy to deal with on a personal level.

Sebastian & Ailin are total opposites forced to work together as the body count continues to rise with all leads pointing to a serial killer with paranormal ties. Things get real once Ailin discloses what's at stake if they don't solve the crime spree before the killer completes his goal.

Throw in the mix the fact that Sebastian begins to have unprofessional feelings for his partner though he's sworn never to mix business with pleasure again. Once burned and all that. Unfortunately, Ailin has an uncanny way of knowing what's on his mind, teasing Sebastian to act on those carnal fantasies which Sebastian won't do but it doesn't hurt to dream.

All bets are off when the two uncover the killer's real motives and discover that the killer's focus has now turned to Sebastian as the next and final victim.

* * * *

New to me author who has written a dick lit quality paranormal m/m romantic suspense. This tale has a definite masculine flavor with it's action, adventure, mystery, and suspense story line but doesn't get in-depth in the occult and/or dark slanted content. One criticism is that the author played out the romance in a slow burn fashion thus delaying my self gratification as a voyeuristic witness of the good stuff between Seb & Ailin. Throw in the fact that Ailin is a highly jealous/possessive/dominating sort of guy. Yum. Yum.

The world building features a contemporary time line in the urban fantasy spectrum of witches and familiars. For any pet lover - this story is chalk full of animals who serve as secondary characters in a delightful fashion. George, Sera, Zrak, & Matilda. Totally laugh out loud moments with these four. Other secondaries add to the depth of the story making the overall story shine. Emrys, from the prequel makes an appearance too.

This is a story that draws the reader in with the ever evolving mysterious crime case AND romance between Seb & Ailin. I will add that there is a blindside ending that I will make no comment about but did serve as the cherry on top element to cap off this story. Can't can't can't wait for the next installment.

Do check out this story if you're a fan of mystery-suspense in the paranormal urban fantasy m/m romantic genre. The entertainment value itself is worth the purchase price.

Read for the third time and still loved it.

re-read: April 2019

Loved it as much the second time as I did the first.

Rating: 5 stars

I really loved this book and the start to the Ellwood Chronicles. I loved both of the MCs. I loved their banter and thought they had great chemistry together. I really liked that their relationship developed over time and while there was instant attraction, it wasn’t an inst-love situation. I thought all the side characters were great, especially the members of Ailin’s coven. Add in a wonderful little kitten, a snake named George and Matilda the rat and it was a wonderful cast of characters.

I thought the story to be good. It get me interested from the start. It was pretty dark and gory in places so be prepared if that sort of thing bothers you. All in all, a wonderful start to this new world the author has created and I can’t wait for the next one in the series.

on one hand I loved it, adored it ... the story was real good and I really, REALLY want to have more!

on the other hand, the characters missed a certain depth and I found it a bit hard to connect with SEbastian. I loved Ailin.
but I find Ailins power a bit simple ... so just chant a bit and everything is ok ... ...but during the fight he is suddenly vulnerable ... it just did not really sound believable.

nevertheless, I really liked it and want the next book asap... so you see, this book makes the different voices in my head argue even more ;)
