Drummer Girl
Sabs catches up with Randy after Italian class and tells her there’s going to be a battle of the bands and the tickets go on sale tomorrow. Randy wonders if it’ll be any good. They never had one at her school in NY. In homeroom, Sabs wants to know if Spike’s band “Wide Awake” will be in the competition and she asks Randy to find out. Randy doesn’t think it’s his thing. The only other band Randy’s heard of is “Iron Wombat” So, she’ll have to find out more about it.

Randy runs into Sabs at the grocery store and they see a notice on the bulletin board that the lead singer of “Iron Wombat” needs a drummer. Randy tells Sabs she’ll think about it, but she knows she’s not a joiner. It’s just not her thing. Randy talks to her friend Sheck in NY and he says its not that bad of an idea for her to consider joining the band and being in the battle of the bands. He asks when it is and she tells him in 3 weeks. He tells her she has to start somewhere. Randy decides to call and sets up an appointment for the next day.

When she goes to meet Troy for the audition, he and the rest of his band are surprised to find outshe’s a girl. She promptly reminds them to look up Sheila E and turns to leave, but they stop her/ The bass player eases the tension and says they just didn’t know she was a girl. Troy tho, thinks she’s just a kid and wants to dismiss her. Alton tho says they should give her a chance. They tell Randy they’ll be playing “Punch the Clock” and she knows she’s going to SLAY! Randy makes the band and tells her friends the next day at lunch.

Randy talks about how much practice they’ll need just go get adjusted to her style (which is flexible while theirs is rigid). They all wish her luck on getting her ideas heard by the other guys. At practice, Randy tries to show off her skills but Troy jumps down her back about it. The other bandmates think she sounds great and are ready to embrace the change, but Troy’s ego won’t let him accept Randy’s changes. because it's “his band” Randy goes even so far to criticize the lyrics. Troy tells her it was a mistake to let her in the band. She doesn’t have the right attitude. Jim surprisingly agrees that the lyrics are weak. Troy challenges Randy. Ironically she’s taken a songwritu=ubg class. The others encourage Randy to give a try and Troy can do the music. After practice, Troy gives Randy some music he’s been working on. Now she’ll have to come up with some hot lyrics quickly.

Troy comes by and he and Randy bond over music. He also gets along great with her mother. Randy is surprised that he’s not the same obnoxious guy that he’d been all week. They work on the music for the show together. Randy starts to think of the similarities between him and Spike. He shares this great song he wrote that was motivated from his anger to Randy and she can’t believe he wrote such a great song. For the rest of the night, Randy can’t get his song out of her mind. They decide to call the song “Fade Out”. Sheck surprises Randy with a visit. Sheck agrees to do the sound for the band’s performance. This isn’t cool with Troy. (It’s clear he’s jealous). Randy gets in his face over it but he tells her she’s not even a full pledged member, Then he throws up that he wrote the lyrics in her face. Randy has it up to here and quits. Jim calls later and makes her try to see reason where Alton couldn’t. Randy doesn’t believe Troy is jealous but she says she’ll rejoin the band for the battle. Sabs talks to Randy also and she also points out the obvious that Troy was just jealous.

On the day of practice, Sheck calms Randy’s nerves by automatically playing music he knows Randy likes. Her friends come over to wish Randy luck. They surprise Randy with Iron Wombat posters that they made and a customized jean jacket that has the band’s name on it. They each have one. Before the battle, Sheck teases Randy about blowing up and forgetting about him as the years go by. Troy interrupts them and asks if he can speak to Randy. He apologizes to her for earlier and tells her he hopes she stays in the band. He calls the song theirs and then asks her out on a date. She says we’ll see.

Sheck asks if Randy if Troy asked her out but she tells him the couple thing isn’t her. But if she does go out with him (which she doesn’t want to date a band member) it won’t be because of him. He looks disappointed because of this. They play “Fade Out” and the whole place goes CRAZY! Sheck runs over to Randy and hugs her. Iron Wombat is the winner of the battle.

My Thoughts
Surprisingly this review only took a page and a little over. But same formula one of the GT girl’s gets involved with something and there’s a guy blocking her from doing something. He acts like a jerk but in the end, it’s because he likes her. Then she realizes he’s not so bad. But what I do like about the GT series so far is that it’s shown females not afraid to go out for male-dominated activities (such as a hockey player or a drummer). It was cool that Randy used the example of Sheila E and it’s a shame that ere aren’t more female drummers. I also liked that “maybe” Randy won’t go out with Troy because I don’t think they all the books have to end with finding the girl a match just to have someone to date.
