The human race is on a crash course of extinction. But there is hope. For centuries, a highly advanced alien society secretly watches us. They cannot interfere with human evolution and must wait for The Chosen One to discover The Mertean Papers, hidden on earth since the 14th century. And it’s during this time that Alays and her family receive the Mertean symbol and Papers with no understanding of what they represent. For six centuries everything stays under the radar until New Orleans artist, Ronnie Weaver paints the futuristic Mertean symbol unknowingly into all of her artwork. All factions both good and bad wake up. What common thread ties these two women to the Chosen One? For it’s only The Chosen One – half human, half Mertean – who can understand and implement the alien technology that will save our world, and ourselves. And everyone is waiting!
This book took me an awfully long time to get through, for it not being terribly long.
There are some interesting concepts being explored here--life once existing on Mars, spiritual and mental evolution, other intelligent species trying to interact with humanity. The book itself covers several interactions between this other intelligent species and various representatives of Earth.
The biggest issue for me was that there's not a lot of over-arcing characters to be attached to. You'd get used to a character and then they'd exit the story, in one way or another, and you'd have to acclimate yourself to the next set of characters/time period/circumstances. It was a little jarring, and I often found myself putting the book down at these points.
The book also ends by switching into a new character, setting up her situation, and then immediately ending. I can understand wanting to cliffhanger so that people will move on to the next book, but at this point there's just not enough connecting the narratives together to make me want to go on.
It's hard to tell a story that spans a long time period. The story is engaging, once you're situated in each time period, but I think you need to go into it knowing it's really more of a collection of interconnected stories than one story.
The human world is close to extinction and alien are watching them but they cannot interfere so they just watched. There is a chosen one but when will they appear? How will it go when they arrive? Can they save the world? How will they do it? See what will happen
