Wow. (Yes, I'm aware that is not a rich vocabulary choice, but bare with me.) There is so much rich writing in the pages of this anthology. I am a fan of urban fantasy, especially when it comes to vampires and witches, so I was excited to have the chance to read this set of stories. It is an eclectic mix of tales ranging from the downright creepy to the thought provoking and everything in between.
I could dissect each story on its own, but we'd be here forever, so I'm going to give an overview. I will say, in terms of all the stories, that they left me wanting to know more. I wanted a longer tale. I wanted elaboration or to know what happened NEXT. However, given that this was an anthology, and not a novel, I was left with little satisfaction. I believe that is the point- leave me wanting more from the authors... and I do.
I found some of the stories nail biting, edge-of-my-seat reads, like "An Awakening" and "Today She Will Be Happy". Some were romantic in only the way a vampire story can be, like "Airship Coffins". Others were a tad tedious and I found myself skimming because the story itself seemed too contrived or easy. I don't like predictable stories, though I have found myself stuck in a rut of reading books that have a formula they seem to follow, so this was a nice step outside the genres I've been reading. "The Mirror Within" was interesting and I'm still thinking about it....it left me with questions!
This is great, especially if you're looking for something quick to read. I carry my iPad around everywhere and was glad to have the short stories and well written poetry to entertain me between errands or appointments. Although, I have to admit, I read most of the stories in one sitting. It was the perfect summer read.
This book is filled with some great writings by some awesome authors. Some I was familiar with and others I was new too. But either way, all stories were great.
