Relationship trap 1. Don’t operate as 2 singles 2. Upbringings May be different and it’s important to acknowledge this and find a common ground on how to handle finances, parent children, and divide house hold duties
Debt trap 1. The conventional way to to strict budget but that doesn’t always work 2. Make it into a game, make a paper snake with each segment signifying a certain amount of debt ($1000) and try to make the snake shorter and shorter over time
Focus trap 1. We expect things right away, the knowledge comes from making mistakes in the journey 2. Eliminate things that waste time, make not to do list
Change trap 1. Listen to inner conscience
Learning trap 1. Celebrate the effort not the success
Career trap 1. Make sure career is 4 things financial, idea, passion, and purpose
Purpose trap 1. Providing service, making meaningful contributions, and building lasting relationships are what is important
The book is presented in a story book style in which the main character is in a marriage crisis as well as a financial crisis. Fortunately a wise and eccentric old friend offers him advice on the 7 traps to success.
Most of the book is pretty good. In many ways written in a manner similar to the energy bus and very different from the 7 habits book of his father. The ending is fairly bold and perhaps a little naive, unrealistic and irresponsible (quit your job despite getting a raise/promotion and being in debt and having no concrete plan). Then again, maybe the author is assuming that the people who are buying and reading this book need a kick in the pants.
Trapology is the study of traps that you get stuck in, unless you are prepared to carefully navigate around them. Think of this book as the ultraviolet lamp that reveals big warning signs you need to see along your life journey.
The Relationship, Money, Focus, Change, The Learning, Career and Purpose traps each give you tools to assess what new routines you want to add in your life, and what beliefs you are ready to discard with.
Reading through the frame narrative (this character Alex struggling with his marriage as well as career) the advice is being offered by a wise mentor, who makes herself available to help when Alex feels daunted by his situation.
Presenting the substance in a dramatized dialogue makes the book extremely readable.
Those who have read Stephen M. R. Covey’s original Seven habits of highly effective people may find some of the advice quite familiar. In fact, Trap 3/7, the focus, bears the same number as the original ”put the first things first”. Be in control of your calendar, create space for your own priorities, and say ”no” more often.
It was in 7 Habits I learned about the four quadrants of activities, sorted by urgency and importance. If you find yourself extinguishing other people’s ”fire emergencies” more than concentrating in your own priorities, you need to regain control of your own schedule.
There is a moderate amount of sources and references, and the ideas couldn’t be more clearly explained.
If you respond well to professional self help literature, here’s a great one for you.

Although this book speaks a lot of truths, i wasn't particularly impressed - not sure if it's because the content didn't wow me given my previous reading, or the style of delivery (conversation between the two characters which at times borders on trying too hard to be funny and inane).
From the value of content, I'd give it 5 stars, but 2 stars for delivery.
"Trap Tales: Outsmarting the 7 Hidden Obstacles to Success" weaves an interesting tale of a man named Alex who overcomes past habits and patterns to take control of his life and win. Although some suggestions were familiar, the book presented many new perspectives and I came away with several pages of solid ideas (including my own applications) on how to implement small course corrections with major impacts. And it left me thirsty for a green smoothie! :)
