When it comes to love, sometimes the best bet is to double down.

Kit and Luke Armas are cyborgs created for one purpose, battle. Now that the war is over, they must fight to carve out a place for themselves in a universe they were intended to die for but never be a part of.

Cargo pilot Zura Watson came to the edge of civilized space to start over. The Drift is a haven for the hunted, the lost, and those seeking second chances. It was also the last place in the cosmos Zura expected to find love.

When the shadows of the past threaten to eclipse this trio’s future, they’ll have to fight for their chance at love and the life they’ve always dreamed of.

Double Down is the first book in The Drift: Astek Station series by Susan Hayes. This is my very first book by this author!

Zura Watson is the owner and pilot of one of the many freighters that travel the galaxy making deliveries. She lost her father about a year ago and has been doing nothing but working ever since. She’s a quiet woman that prefers to be alone. But she’s been drawn to a certain bar in the Drift and has been having quite a few dreams about two certain cyborgs lately.

Kit and Luke Armas are twin cyborgs. The cyborgs were originally created to fight in the wars and then whoever lived would be exterminated. But once the wars were over, they were allowed their freedom. Kit and Luke own a bar and fight club on Astek Station. They always knew they would share a woman. They once thought they might have found her only to be badly hurt. Then Zura started coming around more often and slowly became more comfortable with them. They became friends first. But Luke knew before Kit that she was meant to be more. That they would be perfect together.

“He had waited long enough for Kit to get with the program. It was time to make their intentions clear.”

As these three are just beginning to figure things out between them, something from Zura’s past isn’t ready to let go yet. When her safety is threatened, Kit and Luke don’t hesitate to stand with their woman and protect her. They’ve just found her. They are not letting anything take her away from them.

This was a super sexy, swoony ménage. Both Luke and Kit are alpha all the way. They will do whatever it takes to make sure their woman is safe and happy. I enjoyed it and look forward to more by this author.

I'm just a "sucker" for cyborgs! This story is twice as nice with twin cyborgs who are madly in love with a feisty beautiful blue alien. I wish I could write more than this mini-review. It was an enjoyable read in a reasonably-well described alien milue. I was invested in the story and the characters were engaging. Nice balance of heat and sweet! Just a little too much use of the word "fraxing" for my tastes but then again what do I know?😀

Double Down was entertaining alien/cyborg menage with low relationship angst and lots of steamy scenes while still having a plot. The heroine and heroes had known each other for months and were interested in each other, but hadn't pursued anything prior to the story's start so the pieces fall into place fairly quickly. The romance is sweet and the Hs possessive and protective, while the h is capable and independent herself. The story is written in third person, all three POVs. No ow drama, a bit of om drama with the h's ex being the source of a threat against her, none are virgins, bc not needed.

There's some suspense/danger with a threat to the h that also provides some action later in the book. I do wish there had been an extended epilogue, but it appears that more of the series will involve their club so I expect readers will see more of the characters in others' stories. Their HEA though was very certain. This was a good intro to this world on the edge of space and I would read more in the series.

This was a somewhat interesting scifi menage that just lacked that extra zing. The writing was fine, but the pacing was uneven, with backstory passages dropped in almost at random. Also, the alieness of the woman wasn't accentuated enough . The guys were alpha enough with one being over the top, and the other balancing that, so not too annoying.

The setting has potential, and I'll put the next book on my TBR, and wait for it to go on sale.

First book in the series, the Hs are cyborg/human bred in laboratory, and h is human/alien - blue and cute. They hookup, fight her evil ex, the end! Well sort of, just with lots of dialogue, telling every feeling and thought, no 'showing' and so many tropes. There was a hint of potential, when the h decides to sneak off to fight the bad guy, pauses then wakes up her lovers so they could plan together. I liked that she used her brain, and the muscles of her cyborgs, but sadly, the Hs were both beta, and There was no passion in the story arc or romance.

DNF at 42%

Yikes this was bad. Literally the definition of all tell and no show. Why did I even read to 42%??

The book starts with a summary of how the FMC saves the station by bringing back a vaccine but gets injured and stays with the MMCs and that's how they become friends. It is literally summarized in a couple pages in the first chapter. That sounds so interesting, why would you summarize that?!?! They then ask her out. Because they're in love with her. Again, the author just like, states that. On page. Absolutely no showing, no tension, no anything. Just lays it all out, plain and boring as can be Freaking bizarre man, definitely very poor writing, how did this get published?

Definitely not going to read these/this series. I am going to go give the Haven Colony series another shot because the one I read was ok? It almost feels like totally different authors wrote the series.

Susan Hayes still delivers her own sci-fi style, in this one two hunky cyborgs and a spunky cargo pilot. For the males life wasn't all that easy, mostly only saw as a machine with no feelings, no rights and could be treated any old kinda way.

The female grew up with less than a norm life, on a ship since she was little, her life's education was colorful to say the least. But strong capable and used to being alone. Anytime she'd pull into Drift she'd go to what now seems to be her fav club. Yeah it had nothing to do with the twin sexy males that owned it, or thats what she keeps telling herself.

Even though you have a bad relationship doesnt always mean you can let go. Sometimes you don't even see bad until its too late, then it leaves you struggling for purchase of your own sanity.

So how does a cocky hot pilot and two equally gorgeous brothers get together? Its only in the stars mixed with grumpy, sexy, hot, funny oh and a bit of a mystery to solve. This decent length story is well worth me recommending it to any of the menage, sci fi lovers. Enjoy!

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this sci-fi ménage romance. It's definitely my first book of this kind. Luke and Kit are alpha cyborg identical twin bad asses. They live in an interesting world out in the galaxy and run a favorite bar in their area. They've known and liked Zura for a while but things don't get romantic or erotic until she is in trouble and they can't stop themselves from stepping in to keep her safe (like all good alphas). Zura is quite the bad ass herself, having grown up too fast and been on her own for a while. There is some ménage MFM sex which I would rate as hot but not off the charts. There's also a great story line, some suspense, drama, danger and a lot of cool and unique aspects since this is a deep space world. I'd still call it a light and fun read that's a good escape.

Good characterization and a solid plot, filled with action and steam, kept me entertained until the end! The next two books in the series also sound quite appealing and give me something to look forward to!

Heavy on the sci-fi world-building as well as romantic smut.

I enjoyed the world. The characters were ok. Some of the alpha male-ness bothered me, but I also liked how Zura shut that Sh** down and was like I am my own person and you can't control me.

I don't know if this story portrayed cyborgs in the traditional sci-fi sense. I think of cyborgs as humans who have parts that are robotic as well as maybe some programming. It's weird that they grew/cloned "cyborgs" but really I guess any human/robotic mashup could be considered a cyborg? They just really seemed less than human. But they were dating an alien so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

DNF 25% just a little boring, a little bit too tell not show at the start with no real pace. No build up to the attraction, no thought patterns that make the cyborgs different from humans or the aliens, alien enough. Zura our heroine, is tough and independent, working with criminals and low lifes around the galaxy but suddenly she is being called ‘little one’ and being protected like a delicate flower. It just pisses me off sometimes how unempowered women become throughout the duration of these books. I just need more from my alien romances these days.

Let hear it for some cyborg smut!!! Bonus it has a good plot...

I loved this start of the series and I thought it was an intriguing world that Ms Hayes built. Living in the far recesses of space a girls gotta be tough and Zura is. What I loved was how she dealt with Kit and Luke and their needs and possessiveness.

Kit and Luke were fantastic read and their personalities were uninque but similar enough to make the triad work.

Holy Fraxx.
Read this in a day. At just over 250 pages it was just perfect.
Susan Hayes is a new author to me but I know I will be reading more from her soon.

Loved the story, a slight twist on what you normally see is these kinds of stories.
The relationship between the characters is so right. They want her, to protect her but also see in her a woman who can defend herself

Dipped my toe into this universe and it's not too bad.

I liked how independent Zura was and when she decided to pursue Kit and Luke, she was straight-forward about it. No games here and that was refreshing.

Another category filled for my reading challenge. I always find it “funny” when the the guys in a menage somehow manage not to even touch hands during sexy times. Anyway, this was alright.

⭐⭐⭐

Luke and Kit former cyborg shoulders, they were created by corporation to fight in the resource war. The identical twin cyborg brother have gained their independence and now own a bar in a distance outpost.

Zura a lovely blue skinned alien, ex pirate turned cargo pilot. Making her way through the universe. Well coping with the death of her father.

Luke and Kit share everything even their love for the same woman.

Pros

The world building was decent.

Th sex scenes were plentiful and tasteful done.

The story moved at a sensible pace.

There was no unnecessary drama or angst.

Cons

There is very little emotional bonding between the trio. To be fair we find out that they have been friends for months before asking her out.

After the initial date the physical relationship begins right away.

The storyline was predictable.

This is an MFM alien romance with no cheating and a HEA.

* I was kindly gifted an Arc in exchange for an honest review*

Wow! How Susan Hayes never disappoints! I always look forward to each of her books, the realistic romance, the relateable and lovable characters and the captivating settings (in this case containing fantastic sci-fi elements) and Double Down delivers each of these just like all her others.

In terms of the romance, it was fast-paced. I don't mean this negatively at all, in fact, quite the opposite. The character's knew what they wanted and went after it, which I really appreciated as a reader as it gave me time to know and fall in love with their relationship, without all the frustrating hair gripping moments i've experienced before where I'm screaming at the characters to just get on with it already and express their feelings. So for that, I owe Susan Hayes much gratitude.

And indeed, how great it was to get to know and fall in love with these characters so easily. Luke and Kit were great alpha males. Tender and loving, yet macho when wanted and I couldn't have loved them more. The banter and jokes between these brothers was hilarious and had me laughing out loud at many occasions throughout the book, whilst also adding to their characters and making them seem so human (an impressive feat considering they're cyborgs). I really appreciated this development of character as it made the aspect of a menage relationship seem so believable. I was able to perfectly understand why these character's were in the situation they were, it seemed to work completely. I also really enjoyed Zura as a character. She was someone that I could easily picture being friends with, and I character that I could root for.

Of course, this would not be a Susan Haye's novel without a bit of intrigue and angst and boy did she deliver. I admit I cried at a certain part near the end (no spoilers, you'll have to read it and enjoy it for yourself ;)) So there were indeed moments of action and tension for those who enjoy that aspect to a story. The Sci-fi elements were incorporated fluently and didn't seem too far fetched either.

The supporting character's were well-developed and I pray there is more to come from this series so that we can explore these character's more. In particular, I'd love a book focusing on Zura's brother.

Overall, this was a fantastic love story between three great characters, that contained great action and intrigue. I'd recommend it for anyone who enjoys fluent, believable dialogue, well-developed characters and a gripping story-line to boot! Well done Susan Hayes on another great book, please keep them coming!

2 stars for the book, but a +1 for the heroine making the super smart decision to involve the heroes with her problem instead of running off on her own.

Yeah, probably spoilers.

If you're going to set your book in the far-off future, make some cultural changes other than making the f-word of this universe fraxx, italics included. I was sick of fraxx by the third time it was used. Although it was pretty funny when the author had to resort to using the real word when it came to "fucking her with his fingers". Yeah, it took me right out of the scene, too.

Anyway, I was significantly bothered when the heroes show up to their date in suits and ties. Really? It would be like having a hero in a contemporary novel show up in Regency-wear, or a formal toga, not as a costume, but as a serious attempt to dress nicely. The whole story could have been picked up and plopped into present day without changing anything other than our heroes' cyborg status.

Speaking of, our heroes are cyborgs. How do we know? Because we are told every other page. This makes absolutely no effect on the story until their medibots are needed. They could have been from any book about hard core soldiers. Apparently, they pop out of incubation as full adults. (Does this mean our guys are 15 years old?) And Cyn drops a whole load of things on us at the end of the book that would have been a big impact on the heroes' lives. But none of it is explained or has any true effect on the two-dimensional characters. Oh, and they consistently forget they can talk privately to each other on their internal comms.

In other words, we're told a lot instead of shown, we're thrown in a universe with very little thought given to world-building, and the characters could have been copy-pasted from any erotica book about soldiers and the plucky, independent girls who fall for them in two weeks. But, hey, at least the heroine isn't TSTL.

edit: I've decided that I'm not giving an extra star for not having a TSTL heroine. We should set higher standards for ourselves.

The Corporations expected you to die for them but you didn’t. You won them the spoils of their war, but you lived. So now that the war is over, what were The Corporations supposed to do with you – the cyborg soldiers that were created to fight. They weren’t actually “human”, were they? For Kit and Luke, they chose to go to the roughest edge of the known universe to start over – an area called The Drift. A place where money and strength – something they had now that the war was over and they were free – were valued. A place where their reputations were a good thing since it helped keep the rowdy customers in their club in line (to a point). A place where they could build a home and a life for themselves. So along with Cynder, their batch sister, they did just that.

Zura is an intelligent, self sufficient and capable woman as well as an excellent cargo pilot. She is used to flying solo and counting on herself. Similar to Kit and Luke, she has spent her life fighting for what she wanted and finds The Drift to be a place where she and her skills are both wanted and needed. She has a crush on Kit and Luke but doesn’t realize her feelings are reciprocated. As these three begin to move from friendship into something more, trouble from Zura’s past shows up.

“When it comes to love, sometimes the best bet is to double down”. These three take a chance – a big chance. One that might end up hurting beyond belief if you lose. But if you win…

A sci-fi romance that involves cyborgs doesn't sound all that romantic. At least, those were my first thoughts before beginning this story of 3. The two identical cyborgs, having been brought to life with the only goal to fight and die defending the interests of their father corporation, have survived the odds stacked against them and outlived the wars that brought reason to their existence. They have outmaneuvered fate and forged a new life among the various species who inhabit the universe and specifically the spaceport/station where their livelihood now rests within the walls of their newly purchased and rennovated night club. Here is where their twist of fate happens when they befriend a local patron to their club and find that they wish to serve her much more than just their newest cocktail and dinner entre. They have finally found what their life has always been missing and what only cyborgs could dream of, but never hope to attain. In turn, these two will become invaluable in so many ways to one very lucky blue-skinned female.

This story is brimming with romance on just about every page! It is really one of the sweetest stories with cyborgs acting anything but machine-like. In fact, these cyborgs are the humanist part of this story, ironically. The adventure added flare and the unique heroine added intrigue and mystery. Not your typical romance, but lovely just the same.

Zura Watson is a loner, a half human half alien being, who pilots a cargo ship on the outer edges of space. Zura reaches a ragtag civilization called The Drift where her life changes in ways she never imagined. There she meets cyborg brothers Kit and Luke Armas, who are struggling to find a place in a world that still looks upon cyborgs as inferior and to be feared.

Double Down is erotic science fiction with a heart. The story is engaging from the beginning and I liked Zura’s tough as nails demeanor, but she has a heart of gold underneath that gruff exterior. Kit and Luke play well off each other and lower Zura’s defenses. The story is explicit and as you can tell from the cover. It’s a menage story, but it’s all about pleasing her.

Tieran Wilder narrates this nearly 6-hour audiobook. She does a nice job fully voicing the production. She gives each character their own distinctive voice and her pacing in the telling of the story was perfect.

Susan Hayes is a new author to me and I enjoy her writing. Her style reminds me of Lisa Lace and that’s not a bad thing! I look forward to listening to more in this series.

I received a copy of Double Down in return for an honest review, I also had hit pre-order so I purchased it as well, I wanted to make sure that this little gem was on my kindle. When Susan hints that she may have a release coming up, the close following on Facebook begins and as soon as I see those pre-order options I hit it so quickly even The Flash can't keep up. Susan is one of my favourite authors and as usual she has not disappointed. She has delivered a book that gives the reader all the goods. There is action, 2 hot as hell alpha cyborgs, an independent and strong leading lady, bad guys all rolled up in a new creative and imaginative world. I don't know how she does it but if this is just the beginning of the Drift Series, I cannot wait for the next one to release.
