The twins get the chance when neighbors go on vacation and leave their five-year-old daughter with the Wakefields. When they get their wish and Chrissy does disappear, the twins are faced with their biggest problem yet. They've got to find Chrissy before her parents come back!
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
The Twin’s Little Sister Jessica is cooing over how cute Belinda’s little brother (Billy) is. She wishes her family had one. I guess she forgot all about learning that she *didn’t* in SVK. Belinda even tells her she won’t feel that way when it’s 5am in the morning and she has to wake up to feed and change it. Jessica says she doesn’t care. If she had a baby as cute as Billy she’d get up. Belinda says she wouldn’t last a week and then she’s be conning Liz to do it. Liz agrees. Liz also reminds her of how adamant her parents are *not* to have another kid. Billie says her parents waited until she was old enough to help out (which to me just sounds selfish). Jessica says maybe *their* parents are doing the same thing. Jessica plans to show her parents how responsible they are by borrowing a baby. Billie says it won’t be her brother. Jessica tells her they’ll think of something.
The twins run into Amy whose been collecting aluminum cans for 3 weeks She’s going to sell them to get soccer tickets for her parents wedding anniversary. The tickets cost 34.00. Amy thinks this is expensive and I think to myself just live until 2025. For 224 cans, Amy earns 2.24. Amy convinces Liz to help her throw a bake sale in front of her house. Steven’s cute friend (Chad Lucas) gives Jessica his Swiss cheese sandwich, tells her she doesn’t look like Steven’s *little* siter, says she’s cute, and asks if she’s going to an upcoming party at Joe Howell’s.
Mrs and Mr. Steele pay the Wakefields a visit. They have a five-year old daughter Chrissy that the twins think is a little doll. The Steele’s have some bad news. They’d made reservations for a weeklong cruise but they forgot their housekeeper’s daughter was getting married that weekend. They can’t take Chrissy with them because she gets sea sick. So, Jessica comes up with the idea that since they need to borrow a little sister to try to prove to their parents how responsible they are they can volunteer to keep Chrissy. Jessica thinks it’s perfect. Liz says the only thing is she’ll probably end up doing all the work. Jessica promises she’ll do her share, but Liz is like yeah I’ve heard *that* one before and she’s frankly sick of it. Jessica gets offended (snorts) and says she’s tired of everyone thinking she’s the irresponsible one. So, she’s turning over a new leaf.
Their parents are proud of them and say if they need any help with Chrissy they’ll be there. The Steele’s are happy and say they’ll drop Chrissy off on Sunday and pick her up Saturday. Jessica and Liz even set up a schedule of who’ll help Chrissy get dressed, braid her hair (in the morning, fix her breakfast, and take her to kindergarten and pick her up. The Unicorns can’t believe Jessica volunteered to watch Chrissy for a week. It sounds too much like *work*. Something Jessica isn’t exactly known for. Mandy and Belinda try to tell her she doesn’t realize what she’s getting into. Then they all start talking about Chad and the party. They all wanna know what she’s going to do about Aaron. She says she’ll cross that bridge when she comes to it, but then she starts to thinking maybe she can have them both.
Liz and Amy’s attempts to make the cookies don’t go so smoothly. At first Amy drops the eggs and they have to go back to the store. Then they don’t have enough dough to make enough cookies for the amount they want to charge. Then they leave the cookie tray on the ground and a neighbor’s dog (appropriately named “The Cookie Monster” eat the cookies. So, they have to go to store and buy cookies. At the end of the bake sale, they only earn 12.60.
Jess and Liz prepare for Chrissy’s visit. Jessica is all to happy to find Chad in the garage with Steven working on the bikes and even happier when he lets her help. He says he likes having her around. Ellen calls and Jessica brags about Chad being over, and what he said. They have the perfect chemistry. Ellen tells her she has a problem on her hands because once Aaron finds out… As the chapters increase, Chrissy turns more and more into a brat. Her first day there, she demands to play in the pool. After that they help Alice make fudge. She gets chocolate everywhere and puts up a fuss when the twins try to get her cleaned up. She wants to eat the fudge first. To distract her from crying, they take her to the Howard’s house to look at their fish (which are her favorite animal). She loses interest in them pretty quickly.
That night, she gets upset about not having her blue pajamas until Jessica gives her (her) blue night shirt with a panda on it. The next morning, she gives Jessica a hard time about getting up and getting her hair done for school. One the way to school, Jessica tries to get her to hurry up by pulling her and she starts telling her she’s hurting her. Bruce says them and calls her a brat, but Jessica takes up for her. At dinner, she tells everyone she had so much fun with Jessica. Still, Jessica couldn’t think of a more boring day. Amy tries to mow this lady’s yard (Mrs. Anderson) for 5 dollars, but she ends up cutting the heads off some tropical plants (that the lady paid a lot of money for) and she only gives her 2.00. Monday after dinner, Chrissy pesters the twins to play a board game (Chutes and Ladders) until bedtime. Jessica makes the mistake of calling the game boring and Chrissy gets angry. So she says she meant to say *fun*. They can’t watch tv because the tv is in the room where Chrissy’s sleeping. So, they decide to make new rules. The first is they can’t watch tv after Chrissy goes to sleep. Jessica isn’t happy because she’s missing a mystery show she wants to watch. Liz says it won’t be like that if they get a new sister or brother because it won’t sleep downstairs.
Jessica has the thought of where will it sleep. Liz says one of them would have to give up their room. Jessica says NOPE! It won’t be her. While they’re talking their music wakes Chrissy up and Mr. Wakefield tells them to go put her back to sleep. Jessica adds this to the list. Don’t play music after Chrissy’s sleep. Then the one who wakes her up has to put her back to sleep. So, she goes downstairs since it was her. Liz tells her how impressed she is that she’s being so responsible. On Tuesday, Chrissy tries to fake like she’s sick so she can stay home from kindergarten but Liz recognizes she’s just doing it for attention (like her house keeper gives her who she says lets her stay home when she’s sick). Liz tells her she’ll have to give her some cough medicine. It taste bad but it’ll make her better. Like that, she’s better.
There’s a fight over a certain ballet shirt that her parents didn’t pack. She says she misses Martha and she wants to go home. Liz tells her she thinks she’s grown enough to handle it. On the way to school, they run into Bruce again. Unfortunately, Chrissy sees a girl with *her* ballet shirt on and starts to have a fit. Bruce tells Liz that he told Jessica she needs to show that brat whose boss. Chrissy kicks Bruce in the shins. At school, Amy tells them about her flop of a job mowing lawns -and how that’s the end of that-. Todd tells her he knows someone who has a business cleaning out garages. Amy tries to get Liz to do it with her but she says she already has a big enough job (and she’s not even getting paid for it). Oh and Liz is happy Todd will be going to Joe’s party so they can spend some time together.
Liz picks Chrissy up from school and they go to the park. They run into Todd and Liz thinking she’ll kick Todd, tells him he’s nice. To Chrissy this means Liz is his girlfriend. It starts to rain but Chrissy puts up a fuss until the ice cream man (who’s packing up) gives her an ice cream bar (so she’ll shut up). Liz wants to get home to do some work, but Chrissy wants to go see the Howard’s fish. Only she doesn’t stay. Liz wonders if all little sisters act like this. Liz gets home and gets Chrissy to watch Seasame Street. She tells her mother she thinks Chrissy is spoiled. Her mother says that’s what happen when you give kids whatever they want.
Aaron tells Jessica after Booster’s practice; he’d like to walk her home but he has something to do. Then he asks if she’s going to the party and says maybe they can hang out there. She also runs into Chad when she’s with Ellen. Chad asks her if she’s seen Steven. Then Jessica introduces him to Ellen. He says he’ll see her at the party. Ellen practically thinks this is a date. All he does is call her a great tool helper. SMH. Ellen asks Jessica what she’s going to do and she says she’s going to let Chad go (rolling my eyes. Like she had him in the first place). Ellen says call her when she does. Jessica thinks about it and really doesn’t want to (but she knows her parents will flip out if she tries to talk to another older boy-which is why she’s *letting him go*).
On Tuesday, its just as hard to get Chrissy to go to sleep. They have to read and sing to her. But then she wakes up when she hears Liz on the phone with Julie. She starts singing Liz is talking to Todd and holding the orange juice carton the wrong way. Of course, it spills all over the floor. Chrissy starts crying. Alice comes downstairs and offers to mop. Liz says she’ll do it. Jessica says she’ll give her another bath. She starts to protest, but Alice tells her she needs a bath and she doesn’t say anything. They have to read to her five times. Before she goes to sleep, Chrissy tells Liz she loves her. Liz says they’ll have to make another rule. No phone calls after Chrissy goes to sleep.
Jessica shows Liz her new cheers and it wakes up Chrissy. So, they have to read the same book to her. (The Cat That Wouldn’t Behave). She’s read it so many times Jessica knows it by heart. Jessica says she loves Chrissy being there but it means giving up a lot of stuff. Jessica admits that maybe they aren’t ready for a baby. The next morning and afternoon go well. Again they go to the park and to see the fish. Chad sees Jessica on the way home and he tells her don’t forget about the dance. She tells Ellen who reminds her she’s supposed to be giving him up. She says it wasn’t the right time. Maybe after they have one dance. She wonders if Aaron will get mad. Then she doesn’t want to break Chad’s heart. She asks Liz if it would be ok to dance with Chad and she says she wouldn’t. She’s supposed to be talking to Aaron. But is Aaron her boyfriend? She says she’s lucky that she knows what’s what with Todd. Liz says she doesn’t. When Chrissy asked was Liz his girlfriend he didn’t say yes or no. Jessica says she bet Todd’s a good kisser. Liz says she definitely wouldn’t dance with Chad. Chrissy is good the rest of the night. Jessica daydreams about dancing with Chad and Aaron cutting in and telling her he wants to be her only boyfriend.
The next morning, Chrissy tells Steven that Liz has a boyfriend, his name is Todd, he rides a bike, and he’s a good kisser. Liz turns red. Chrissy must have over heard (and understood) everything they said. Jessica turns red too. If she told about Todd how long would it be before she told about Chad? Steven is VERY interested and teases Liz asking her how long this little romance has been going on. He thanks Chrissy and says if she has any more news she can tell him at dinner. Liz is angry with Steven but also at herself for not being more careful. Jessica wonders if she’ll tell about Chad but Liz is now angry with Jessica too and tells her the next time she has an idea to sit for five year olds tell her so she won’t be around.
Jessica shots back it’s not like she had to twist her arm and does she not think she doesn’t want to get out of it. Liz thinks things are going from bad to worse. This child is getting between her and her sister now. Amy works for a man named Mr. Anderetti cleaning out his garage and earns six dollars. Now she’ll be cleaning out his daughter’s garage. She does a good job but accidently throws away some baby pictures and has to go through five bags of trash to find them. Even tho his daughters garage is larger she still ends up charging six dollars.
At dinner that night, Jess comes up with a plan for Chrissy not to say anything by monopolizing the conversation and sticking food in her mouth ever time she starts to say something. She’s about to tell something about to Steven about Chad but Jessica “accidently” knocks over a glass of milk in her lap. Liz rushes her upstairs before she can answer Steven whose about to ask her what was she about to say. Steven doesn’t come home before they put Chrissy to bed. They let her play with his old blocks, and read her some of their stories. Chrissy tells Jessica she’s nice and she loves her before she goes to sleep.
Jessica tells her she’s nice too and she loves her too. The garage cleaning slows down for Amy. Amy doesn’t really want to go to the party and just wishes someone would give her the money she’d earn for a few more jobs. Jessica is on the phone with Lila when Steven tells she needs to see what Chrissy’s done. When she looks Chrissy has gotten into her makeup and gotten it all over herself, Jessica’s bed spread, and the turquoise dress she’s wearing to the party. Jessica snaps and calls Chrissy a bad girl, Chrissy says she’s not bad and she’ll just be Steven’s little sister. Steven says she’s not bad. She’s given him a lot of interesting info. Then he asks Jessica if she really thought Chad could have a crush on her.
He says he’ll have to go to the source to see if it’s true. Jessica pleads with him not. Steven says if she didn’t make it up then it shouldn’t matter. Jessica says she just doesn’t want him to be embarrassed. He then wonders what Aaron would think. The hint is clear. He’s planning to tell them both. Liz tells Jess she doesn’t think Steven will tell. Jessica says she’s not going to the party, but Liz says she has too because she can’t let Steven bully her. Plus if Steven does talk to Aaron she has to be there to explain. Alice calls tho and says she’ll be late so she can’t watch Chrissy. Ned is supposed to but he has car problems. So, Liz calls Amy (knowing she needs the money). She agrees to watch Chrissy for 7.00. Chrissy throws a fit. She doesn’t want Amy. She wants Liz.
At the Wakefields, Chrissy turns down everything Amy suggest to do. She finally agrees to play hide and seek, but the places she hides are too easy. She tells her to find some better places. Liz by request of Jessica goes to spy on Chad and Steven and finds out he didn’t mean her to think he thought of her as a girlfriend. He sees her more as a little sister. Steven says he might have overdone it on the teasing. He then asks him to dance with her and let her down easy.
Liz tries to get to Jessica to tell her but she’s intercepted by Todd. After she talks to Chad, Jessica knows that despite what he said it was her fault for tricking herself into believing he liked her. Lila and Ellen saw Chad kiss her and ask her what happened. Jessica leaves it vague and says they just said goodbye. He’s sorry things didn’t work out and from now on he’d like to think of her as a sister. The party’s a bust! All the boys want to do is look at Joe’s model train. So, Jessica goes home. Liz stays at the party to talk to Todd.
When Jessica gets home, Amy is frantic. She can’t find Chrissy. They find her at the neighbor’s looking at the fish. When Liz is at the party, Todd tells her he does like her more than anyone else and if someone wants to refer to him as her boyfriend he doesn’t mind. Jessica and Amy apologize to Chrissy and say they don’t think she’s a little monster. Although basically Amy says she wouldn’t sit for her again. Well, she doesn’t put it like that but… Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield compliment the twins and tell them that maybe they should re-think having another child. Jessica, Liz, and Steven all agree NO THANK YOU!
My Thoughts: Hopefully this is the end of this wish. I don’t want to be reading about it again in the SVH series. I know it’s tempting, but this kid would have put me off wanting to have a kid for the rest of my life. In the later series, I wonder do either of the twins end up with kids.

I think I'll miss this book as well as "Jessica's Secret". My favorite parts were the babysitting scenes and how both twins were responsible. I wasn't crazy about the subplots though. I might write a babysitting story of my own next year.
I mean, Chrissy wasn't even that bad!? I feel like this was a missed opportunity for her to be a huge brat and really stick it to the twins, but she was just a normal kid.
