Identical twins Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield and their friends from Sweet Valley Middle School are shipwrecked! After their ferry was hijacked on a school field trip, the twins saved the day by tying up the hijackers and seizing the helm. But the boat got caught in a storm, and now the twins and their classmates are stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere.
Elizabeth and Jessica are determined to escape. But it won't be easy. The hijackers have found their way to the island—and they're out to kill!
The concluding title in an exciting two-part mini-series, Nightmare at Sea.
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Synopsis: I know you are all just DYING to know if the SVMS kids get home safely, but I can honestly tell you that I wish they had stayed on the island. This one was SO BAD. I have no enthusiasm, therefore, to review it. But I know I will have to tell you a little something, so this is what I will tell you:
Jessica and Elizabeth are separated into different groups with their respective friends. Each group thinks the other is a cannibal or a pirate. They are all complete and total idiots.
Bruce bitches about Elizabeth the whole book and constantly blames her for everything. All of the Unicorns, including Jessica, are inclined to believe him. The two groups constantly reunite and separate ad nauseam.
Janet tells everyone 100 times that she is an eighth-grader. Yes, Janet, and you are also extremely immature with a crap name.
They all try to build a raft to get home, but it obviously doesn't work.
They all find the briefcases full of the money that the hijackers stole, and the hijackers tie them up and try to kill them again. Yawn.
Liz finds a dinghy FOUR DAYS LATER on another part of the island. She is a moron. She also won't leave without the other obnoxious group. Whatever.
They all make it to the dinghy, row out, and magically run into another boat that recognizes the kids and pulls them up to safety. They get home, have no PTSD whatsoever, and Jessica starts talking about how psychic she is as set-up for the next book that will probably not mention this crap-ass miniseries at all. I can't blame the ghosties on that one.
Okay.... ????
Alternate Title : "Did You Know? Janet is an Eighth-Grader!"
Tagline: "Shipwrecked!" (Well, it wasn't really a ship, but whatever.)
On a Scale of 1-10, How Annoying is Elizabeth? 5
On a Scale of 1-10, How Sociopathic is Jessica? 7! I hate her in this one.
The Big Deal: Pretty much that The Island Dreamer has sunk into the ocean and the SVMS kids are now stuck on "Terror" Island.
Lingering Questions: Why is Jessica in different clothes on the cover? And why is it mentioned that Elizabeth is wearing a sweatshirt in the book when all she had on was that flimsy striped t-shirt?
Cover: Good or Bad?: Better than the last one. I guess this picture is supposed to depict the ... well, actually, I don't know what it's showing. Liz is the one that gets rescued from the water twice, but I don't recall Jessica being rescued, at least not by a guy I am assuming is supposed to be Bruce.
Quotes from the Book: "Lila peered closely at Jessica. 'Well-not really,' she said after a moment. 'Your eyes are more kind of hazel.' 'They are not!' Jessica glared at her friend. 'They're bluish-green, just exactly like the water.'" Okay, ghostwriters. We get the freaking point! Even in (supposed) dreams, Jessica and Elizabeth's eyes cannot deviate from blue-green.
"Jessica splashed a little water on her face. What a great invention water was, she thought." Invention? Um, Jess...
"'Oh, I don't know. I guess I just feel a little guilty. Almost like we killed them or something.'" Shut up, Elizabeth.
"'If we ever get off this island, I'm never eating fresh fruit again.'" Now now, Jessica. You know you have to maintain your perfect size-six figure.
"Jessica found herself a little disappointed that he was convinced so easily." Doesn't she always. She's not complete without a poor soul to manipulate and wheedle.
"'You're absolutely right,' she said, surprised how easy it was to convince herself of Elizabeth's guilt. 'I'm with you.'" Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.
"There had to be enough water in her shoes to quench the thirst of everyone in Los Angeles." Heh.
"Elizabeth took a step forward, too. I could actually strangle Jessica, she told herself. The idea was strangely disgusting and fascinating at the same time. She could feel her hands taking on a life of their own." You guys! Elizabeth really is Margo Black, and this quote proves it! Also, it's the best quote of the entire book.
"'So.' Jack's voice was rough. 'We kill one every hour till someone tells us where the money is hidden.'" Wakefields and Unicorns first!
Final Rating: One star. They all fought so much it was almost worse than A Night to Remember. Almost.
A few years ago I re-read the book before this and lamented the fact that I couldn't remember anything about this second part to the story. I shouldn't have bothered to be upset, because this was bad, even for Sweet Valley standards.
Also, Elizabeth should have just left the Unicorns and Bruce on the island. (Too harsh?)
