Sweet Valley Twins #73

Lila's Music Video

Rate this book
Lila's in way over her head...

The Unicorns are making a music video! Lila Fowler insists on being the singer, since it's her video camera. But there's one catch: Lila has a terrible voice, and she'll be humiliated if anyone finds out.

As hard as Johanna Porter tries her best to coach her, Lila is hopeless. Johanna is shy, but she has a fabulous voice—which gives Lila a great idea: Johanna will do the real singing from backstage, while Lila lip-synchs on camera!

Their plan works perfectly. The video is so fantastic that the Unicorns submit it to a competition on RockTV, and Lila wins the chance to perform—live! Lila is terrified. How will she ever get away with this one?

Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.

I still love this one!

However, I do find it funny that everyone talks about Jessica's great voice, since it's well established in SVH and SVU that she can't carry a tune. Oh, Sweet Valley continuity...

My school had a car boot sale before the summer holidays and this was one of the books which didn't sell. The librarian has no want for Sweet Valley books (and I don't blame her for it) so I took this and two others home with me to dwell in some nostalgia. It was actually a really fun read, although very unrealistic. It teaches two lessons: one, that you should have confidence in your talents, and two, that you shouldn't use other people because eventually it will come back to bite you! There is a character in this book called Johanna, which I found amusing as that's the name of my best friend. I thought the naming choice was a bit unusual, as how many people are called Johanna who aren't German/Austrian/Swiss? 5/10 I'm debating whether I should keep this book for my kids or if it isn't really worth that much.

Oh the brilliance of Francine Pascal. How you write directly to teens and never talk down to them. Good times.
