The Broken Lands #3

Wayfarer's Keep

Rate this book
Branded a traitor by her people, Shea and her warlord—the fiercely dangerous Fallon—travel to the Pathfinders’ seat of power at her father’s request, hoping to form an alliance despite the distrust between them. It doesn’t take long before Shea and Fallon realize something is dangerously wrong in the place she once called home. Ancient, deadly creatures—gone for hundreds of years, once again walk the lands, awakened from a deep sleep. Worse, it seems the Pathfinders are keeping a secret—one that could destroy them all.

On the brink of battle with each other, the Pathfinders and Trateri must join forces if they hope to defeat the evil at the heart of the Badlands. As the tension rises between the two peoples, and Shea and her family, Shea and Fallon must convince them to overcome their differences if they are to triumph over impossible odds. Because the beasts may be the least of their worries. Sometimes betrayal comes from within, and the most dangerous monsters may be those closest to them.

Writing is my first love. Even before I could read or put coherent sentences down on paper, I would beg the older kids to team up with me for the purpose of crafting ghost stories to share with our friends. This first writing partnership came to a tragic end when my coauthor decided to quit a day later, and I threw my cookies at her head. Today, I stick with solo writing, telling the stories that would otherwise keep me up at night.

Most days (and nights) are spent feeding my tea addiction while defending the computer keyboard from my feline companion, Loki, who would like to try her paw at typing.

*Sigh* this was kind of a downer of an ending for this trilogy. Not that it was bad, because it wasn't, it just wasn't as great as I hoped. Mainly it boils down to the fact that the first two books centered on Shea adjusting to living/working in a clan society she does not come from and learning to love and be in a relationship with the Warlord (leader of the clan). All the while fighting against various deadly beasts and people. It was very enjoyable! But then in this book we unfortunately get to see more of where Shea comes from, the pathfinders. Turns out they are just kind of uninteresting. The only thing they have going for them is that they have some weird weapons that came in handy in a 'deus ex machina' kind of way. I was hoping for a major confrontation with Shea's parents, but even that was a bit of a let down.

I don't regret reading this series, but I do wish it had ended on a stronger note.

ETA: apparently there is another book in this series, that does not feature Shea, and I have zero interest in reading that. But I am still very much interested in the author's Firebird Chronicles series, starting with Rules of Redemption if you want to check that out.

I really liked the first book of this series, but it’s been a steady decline after that.

Shea, Fallon, and a part of their army make their way to the Pathfinders’ keep after Patrick promised that the Pathfinders will give Fallon the Highland if they come to their stronghold to help them deal with the strange problems they’ve been having lately with the beasts. Once they arrive at Wayfarer’s Keep, they realize that the beasts problems and the strange occurrences happening are not new. They’ve been happening for a while now, and Shea might very well be in the middle of it.

The big bad guy was finally revealed, but it was not a surprise at all to me. There were (too) obvious clues and foreshadowing since the middle of the second book, so there was no real shock when his identity was revealed. There was also a tendency to overexplain some details and overall, this book felt long and bland. There is no real elaborate plot, it’s just a pile of Beasts, mysterious magic, and fights, with a villain that is evil simply because and is easily dispatched at the end of the book, without real struggle. Seriously, the villain has no depth at all, and we still don’t know what drives him besides the desire to do what a strange entity asked him. He was there simply to provide a bad guy to blame and to force Shea to go on a mission to find and destroy him.

Shea’s character felt contradictory in this final book. Fallon said that she needed to feel loved and needed to thrive, yet she never seemed to care that much if people liked her or not and preferred to be left alone to do her things. Shea also said that she hated making decisions for others, leading, and being responsible for others, yet that is exactly what her job as a pathfinder was, and she seemed pretty okay with making decisions for others without explaining anything. It feels as though the author wanted her character to develop and change, but didn’t take the time to show us the change, just told us about it through conversation.

I complained in my review of the second book that Fallon was too controlling and decided on everything, without any regard for what Shea wanted. He was better in this book, thankfully, and he did try to make Shea his equal, which I appreciate. The thing is, he decided to make her his ‘Battle Queen”, which means that she holds the same power as he does in the army, and I have issues with that. First of all, Shea is not a warrior or a battle strategist. It makes no sense to me that she would be the one leading the army if anything were to happen to Fallon. Secondly, Shea said many times that she didn’t want to lead the Trateri. She has no interest in their politics, and hates sitting at their council, so why would she be happy taking the lead if he were to die? I just think that it would have been possible for him to treat her as an equal and to have others respect her as a Telroi, there was no need to suddenly add the concept of a Battle Queen to the book.

Other informations are just thrown into conversation, and I got the feeling that I missed a few chapters at first, because it was the first I read about it, but it had been happening for a while. For example, Shea has been having brutal nightmares every night, according to her conversations with Fallon, but we barely saw any hint of those nightmares. The same happened with Mist. I liked the little orphan in the previous book, but now she is talked about as “the girl Shea adopted” or her “foster daughter”, but Shea spent only a few days with Mist in the second book. Their relationship was portrayed as something deep and developed over weeks, instead of them spending a few days together after Shea saved her.

On a side note, the narrator didn’t do as good a job as in the first book. There were weird pauses in the middle of sentences, or no pause where there should have been one, and overall there was a lack of emotions in the narration.

Overall, I am glad that I finally completed this trilogy, and I don’t regret giving it a second try because the first book is awesome, but sadly, it went downhill after that. I know there are more books in this series that follow another character, but I will not read them.

I'm so happy to have found this series because I loved so much about it. The smart, brave and cunning heroine. The warrior hero that was deadly but also very honorable and protective. The many side characters who brought more to this series. The constant flux of obstacles thrown in their path that allowed us to see the special qualities of all the characters. The imagination the author portrayed in this very creative world building. I honestly can't say enough and highly recommend this series.

"She wouldn't stand by and let them face what was coming, not if she had a chance of stopping it. After all, that's what it meant to be a pathfinder. You stood and faced the dark when others ran."

That was the moment I realized I was reading the genesis of a leader, a woman redeemed, a woman ready to carry the mantle of responsibility for her people. This bit of internal speech comes in the middle of a heart deep revelation for Shea, the heroine of the high fantasy series, The Broken Lands, by T.A. White. In this final book of her journey, I realized she was finally ready to be the hero her people needed. The evil, the beasts, her family, and her partner, Fallon, all realized it, too.

Wayfarer's Keep is much like the first two books, where the beast attacks and human betrayals come so fast and furious there is barely time for a breath. White keeps a reader ever on edge because death is assured for some, on both sides of good and evil. It is this pattern of life and death that has shaped Shea into the hardened adult we find in book three. She has walked the path of reckless youth and invincibility, and somehow managed to come out the other side as tempered as a steel weapon. To her credit, she still lets her moral compass guide her, along with love of her people and Fallon. This book is made so much stronger and more pleasurable by the steadfastness that is the relationship between Shea and Fallon. It is mature. It is strong. It is passionate. Their romance in book three is about grasping on to what they have in order to make a future for themselves and all the Trateri and Pathfinders.

While reading this book, there is no doubt I was channeling some aspects of The Lord of the Rings, especially the dramatic scenes of The Battle of Helm's Deep in Peter Jackson's 2002 film. The scope, the despair, the fortifications, the bravery, the oncoming horde are all so real you can taste them. Yet that overwhelming scene is not the pinnacle of the story. There is even more, and it is a path Shea must ultimately walk alone. I don't think I am giving anything away with that statement because the entirety of the trilogy has been preparing the reader for such an outcome.

So much mystery and intrigue surrounds the Trateri arrival at Wayfarer's Keep. It is dangerous every moment, and yet extremely personal at the same time. Secrets are revealed, but not enough. I have been waiting for 12 months and countless hours of reading to understand what cataclysm happened in this world, and despite the fact that I am now done, I am still not sure what happened beyond the arrogance of the human race. White promises more to come in the Broken Lands story, but I am not sure I will ever truly understand the evil that tore this world apart. Perhaps that is as it should be. It is a lesson that some things are lost to history, doomed to ever repeat. Only hope and happiness keeps us going.

Here I am, at the conclusion of this fantastic trilogy, waxing philosophical. What a credit to the author that I felt satisfied by the romance, the adventure, the characters, the world-building, and yet the lack of closing every story loophole simply buoys me up in a staid feeling of hope for humans, aspirations for the human condition and confidence in our ability to maneuver a way to peace with our enemies.

Of Note
To adequately enjoy book three, you definitely have to read the first two books in the series. In fact, I would recommend skimming both before embarking on this sequel. It has been very close to a year since I read the first two. I needed the refresher, and would have benefited from it since there is little in the way of backtracking for plot or characters. The action picks up directly where book two ended and familiar characters are reintroduced without reminders of their personalities or functions. I muddled through until I was good and entrenched again. Don't make my mistake if it has been awhile since you entered the Lowlands, the Highlands or the Badlands or encountered the many, many side characters.

This really is an absolutely amazing series

Definitely worth reading by anyone; doesn't matter if you like UF or not, you will absolutely like these books.

Only annoying part: the series isn't done yet, but there are no more published books. I hate it when I don't have the foresight to actually check before starting a series...
Still, the actual story finishes, so all in all, yay!

The Broken Lands series by T.A. White is one of my favourite fantasy romance books and I was really looking forward to the third book.
I liked it, don’t get me wrong.
Why I still gave it only 3 stars?
It is hard to pinpoint for me.
Maybe due to higher expectations, I can’t tell for sure.

It was the all around feeling i got while reading. A lot of things didn’t add up, were too convenient or mentioned once and never addressed again. The story didn’t feel connected. More like single staccato story lines. The ending was disappointing and left so many questions unanswered.

The first two books built up to an epic battle, which wasn’t delivered for me. We got several “smaller” ones and I never felt anxious, or excited. I never felt the suspense, really. The end “battle” in the badlands was disappointing as well. It was all nice and well but left too many questions, of how, why and what, unanswered.
Many plot threads just were too convenient.
For example like seeing Griffin and putting it aside. Or when Shea was tour guiding her friends through the Keepers castle, resulting in “silver” coating the weapons. How convenient they ended up there and nowhere else. Convenient that she was part of the special bloodline. Convenient that suddenly Mist dreamed about the future. And many more. It felt not part of the story, not really integrated just only been told to serve a purpose. The same goes with the weapons and treasures, they all only were mentioned when needed and convenient for the story.
At least after the first attack I would have expected for them to strategise, to ask if there are more weapons to use, to learn about possible enemies etc. That all fell short, somehow. It was only revealed when needed. In the first two books Fallon was in control when it came to affairs of war and battle, in the third book, they all more stumbled from one incident to another. It didn’t fit.
New interesting species and magical objects were introduced but after the small plot thread it was forgotten to never be addressed or reappear again.
All other side characters were awesome, as usual.

Book 1 and book 2 built up on each other. The third book not so much.
The end was also not really satisfying.
I really hope we get more books from Shea and Fallon to put all the new mentioned magical objects, the new weapons, the new magical creatures like the birds, and others into place.
What happened to the creature still in the tunnels?
Where did they settle in the end? The highlands, the lowlands or always on the move? Maybe building their own settlement? What was the cause for the rot in the grasslands? Is it still there and a danger to other areas? There was nothing revealed about the catalycism or what or who caused it, really. Did the entity in the badlands have anything to do with it? What about the seals? Can they be closed again? What happened to Mist?
I could go on and on... so many unanswered questions!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

What an incredible ending to an extraordinary adventure!

description

Shea and Fallon continued to amaze me in this final addition of their story. Shea has grown from the woman who was once a solitary entity, untrusting of those around her, judgmental of their motives, and broken from the experiences in her past. During this book we see her embrace everything that she is, all that has helped her to become the woman a warlord would claim and most importantly, her own strength and how it strengthens those around her.

Fallon definitely reins as one of my top favorite heroes. It wasn’t something big that he did, but all the little things…a covering of the bedclothes as she sleeps, being sure their partition is closed so others could not see her, but most of all, allowing her to become her own woman when his very nature demanded that he coddle her.

description

”She was his world, the light in his darkness, the voice of reason when his primal instincts threatened to subsume the man he was, leaving nothing but a killer behind. She was as vital to him as breathing. They might lock heads, fight and make up, but they were partners too. At the end of the day, he chose her and somehow, despite everything, she’d chosen him back. He would do anything to protect that gift she’d given him.”

This has so much more adventure, drama and danger that resembles nothing in the previous books. This isn’t a rinse and repeat series. Each book is distinctive and unique while carrying the story of Shea and Fallon, as well as their followers, into their next trial.

There’s no denying I loved everything about this epic tale. The world building is exemplary and the characters well developed to the point I felt they were family, or in some cases, my own sworn enemy. I went into this series with a certain amount of uncertainty due to the fact that it is a series and I hate committing myself to anything longer than one book. I am so glad I let my book bestie talk me into it and I’m already missing this broken land and the people it harbors.

3.5 stars

First half - 3 stars
Second half - 4 stars

Were it not up to my masochistic wish to finish every incomplete series in my bookshelves, I would've quit on the first half of the second book. I'm sorry, but the only time I felt even a remote desire to continue (in all 3 books) is after I passed the 50% mark. Which is quite frankly a disappointment because
1. I would've missed on all the parts that made me initially enjoy The Broken Lands
2. this series had all the potential to be epic.

Before starting this book I wrote a list of questions for myself to answer after finishing. So here they are:

- Was mist adopted?
Figures this is my first question, but the answer is I LITERALLY HAVE NO CLUE. There were several mentions that she was "adopted" by Shea, but she literally made two appearances in this book and was never mentioned again...

But at least we found out she had a purpose to the plot.

- Did all the bullheaded men finally reach higher brain capacity than that of a chicken and realise that Shea is fucking awesome & is not to be underestimated?
Damn, that was a lengthy one sorry.

Only took them a freaking century but yea. It was really satisfying to see Shea finally be appreciated by the Trateri, especially by the ones that gave her the most bullshit.

"Stand for Shea Halloran of the three names, Battle Queen of the Trateri horde, Slayer of the Dark, and the Flock's Burning One."

- Were the stakes higher?
Yes, but the execution was underwhelming. However it was pretty fitting with the vibe of the series so I'll let it slide.

- How are the side character?
Still didn't care about most of them. You know who I DID care about though? Covith & Ajari. They were actual blood-thirsty, bat looking, claw flinging, human hating beasts with human intelligence. AND YOU KNOW WHAT?
description

"I should warn you- if you break your word to us, even once, we'll kill you all," Fallon said, still clasping Covath's forearm.
"I was just about to say the same," Covath returned.

^This part though? That is what I call a peaceful alliance based on trust and prosperity😌

- How's the romance?
On the upside, I did start to feel a tinge of attachment to Fallon & Shea's relationship. They were turning into one of those powerful af, ride or die couples and I was very into it.
description
description

Granted it was a bit late, as I finally deemed my high maintenance ass to care, the book was ending.

Which reminds me...
I am extremely pissed that we didn't get a 10 years later epilogue of Shea & Fallon being legendary Trateri rulers whose story earned the respect, fear and fascination of everyone.

Fucking disrespectful if you ask me.

Over all,
This series could've easily become one of my favourites were it not so tame (by my standards). The biggest advantage of this series is it is realistic and logical, mostly thanks to the heroine. Even the magical aspects of this story seemed very grounded and somehow described in a way that made it less out of this world.
I suspect that is the reason for it being so tame, since grander plots tend to border on being unrealistic.

Anyhow, this series was solid and I 100% do not regret reading it (despite the rating)

What an amazing series!
Someone need to make this one into movie. ❤️

I totally loves this book, and our heroine and hero growing into much better versions of themselves too, which is a bonus! Love their relationship 😍

This could be what Earth would looks like in the future, destroyed by our greediness and everything set backward to the past, very basic and only the strongest will survives.

As I mentioned before, Shea doesn’t have magic but the story itself is magical full with creatures who hate humans. Here, she and her warlord try to do something to avoid war with those magical beings which could end up they all be killed!

I don’t remember another story similar like this, but another series came to my mind after a while, Shea doesn’t have a superpower like Shanti, but if you love K.F. Breene’s The Warriors Chronicles I think you’re going to love this series too.

Let me warn you something, the romance came very late in book #1, but don’t worry since book #2 and #3 full with it .

Highly recommend if you love a strong independent heroine and a hero who tried his best to reduce his protectiveness instinct in a dangerous magical world.

Somehow even 3 Stars seem like a bit of a stretch. There was something bothering me about this series throughout. I couldn’t put my finger on it. And then as the incredibly dragged out book reached its 71% mark and the author was introducing new characters with details and giving more insight into Shea and Fallon I realized - this book had no plan. What is the lux? Who know! What caused the cataclysm? Who knows! Who made the seal and how? Who knows! The book really didn’t answer anything of import. At times it is read like an erotica. It’s just a very, very average read.

3.5/5.0.
I really did like this story, just not quite as much as the first two in the trilogy. It felt a bit disjointed at times - especially near the end when Shea travels to the “heart” of the badlands. There were so many small things that didn’t make sense or weren’t fully understood and that was really odd for this talented author. Still the overall story kept me reading and enjoying late into the night!

Sheallon is back and they are kicking ass and taking names! What a thrilling conclusion to T.A. White's Broken Lands series. What an ending for our favorite Pathfinder and her Warlord. THAT ENDING WAS EVERYTHING!

Wayfarer's Keep was action packed from page one. It was exciting and some parts left me breathless. Shea really came into her own and I loved how fearless and strong she was. She really is an amazing lead character. She had gained so much in the past two books, love, people, a sense of belonging and she knew that if she didn't finally face her past, she would lose it all.

So much goes on in this novel. It really helps to have read the previous two books before diving into Wayfarer's Keep, like maybe do a binge read the series. The consequences of book two follows Shea and Fallon into Wayfarer's Keep and so much from book one comes into play. The deadly consequences of Shea's disastrous trip into the Badlands finally comes full circle and the thing that almost broke her and what she fears the most comes back with a vengeance.

What I absolutely love about this series is Shea and Fallon's love story. Those two crazy kids were made for each other. The push and pull of book one was fun, the turbulent getting to know you phase of book two kept them interesting and the realization that nothing in the world is worth more than the love the two have for each other is was a fitting end to their story. This was not an insta-love, well maybe for Fallon, but not for Shea. Shea needed to face her past, she needed to come to terms with it and accept what happened. She needed to grow as a person and she needed to accept who she has become before she had any chance of fully accepting Fallon into her life and he gave her that space and support, no matter what crazy thing she did or said.

So many questions from book one and two are answered in Wayfarer's Keep and so many new questions pop up. We get a little more back story to what actually happened to the old world, what caused the great cataclysm, what caused the Badlands, and what ultimately caused the beasts.

I was really happy with Wayfarer's Keep and I as I expressed in the first paragraph, I'm really happy with the ending. There are a lot of twists and turns in Wayfarer's Keep and I found it hard to put down my kindle to actually do real life stuff, like feeding my family or doing actual work at work. If you have read the first two books, Wayfarer's Keep is a must read. The whole series is a must read!

I received an ARC from the author with no requirement to leave a review. This is a totally independent and honest review.

There are several things to know before reading this review, firstly I have been, in the literal sense of the word, pining for a book that could draw me in and hold my attention and keep me captivated, secondly for several reasons I won’t get into books have become scarce and it felt like a mini miracle when I got to read these books, and thirdly the Amazon Rain Forests were burning and on top of all the strife and pressure I was under, my heart just broke and I really needed a short respite, no matter how temporary.
So what I’m saying, in the interests of full disclosure is that, maybe these factors influenced my rating this book so highly. But it was serendipitous for me to get my hands on it. I spent three days which strangely also coincided with a mini national holiday, in an immersive state of being where I could deny all that was happening outside my bubble. But when I look back I realise that not all books can manage this. So even though I’m uncertain about my feelings for this story, and I’m judging the trilogy in its entirety, I must give credit where it’s due. Below please find my SPOILER filled review of all 3 BOOKS.

The first volume was the best. The pacing, the world building, character development, plot, everything was done just right. But even though all aspects and characters were at their best, i still could tell that I didn’t really like the heroine. For all her thirst for knowledge, her incredible skills, instincts, insight, resourcefulness, etc., she was just such a narrow minded, flat personality. There were no layers to her. Also,

I'm to exhausted to write reviews for every book of this series. So this is a copy of my first review.

All the books of this series (5) get a four star rating. I didn't rated with five because at no point did I have the feeling that I need to binge this series like I did with my all time favorite fantasy series.

I loved this series. 5 books are about The Broken Lands, but there are two heroins. The first three books are about Shea and #4 & #5 about Eva. But the storyline continues through the books.

I liked both heroines and the plot was nice. I enjoyed the pace.

The Broken Lands series was fun to read. The first book focused on character development and building a credible transition for the heroine’s world view. The second book and third book put the heroine and her warrior through trials, peril, and Lord of the Rings-like quest. I’m totally invested in this world now and am ready to read the next two books that feature a new protagonist. The ending of this series felt rushed at the end yet I appreciated it wasn’t perfectly tied with a pretty bow.

DNF 49% due to rage. What do you call foreshadowing when there is no shadow, just transparent plot? The culprit was obvious halfway through book 2, yet we are suppose to be shocked when the “revelation” comes mid through book 3. And that is a threefold issue: (1) it does not compliment the author, (2) makes it difficult for the reader to cheer for idiot protagonists (3) offends the reader’s intelligence. And let not get me started on other issues, like lack of editing (entire chunks of books 2 and 3 should have been eliminated as they do not push the plot forward, just makes the story drag), inconsistencies in events between books 2 and 3, illogical actions...

Book one was really great - that’s what makes this unravelling so maddening. Uh!

A great ending to the story arc for the first 3 books and for Fallon and Shea. The 4th book in this series is about a different couple. First of all you can't really read this book without having read the previous books but they are all very good so I recommend starting from the beginning. I love how much Fallon and Shea have grown in this book. Fallon has learned to accept Shea's abilities and learned that he has to be able to let her do her own thing even when it means she might be in danger. Shea has learned to trust and depend on other people. The secondary characters are also really great and nuanced. There is a big adventure, danger, suspense and a beautiful love story. A kick ass heroine and an Alpha hero who loves her.

I am relieved to have finally finished Wayfarer's Keep. Overall, I am glad to have given the series a second chance but this book was definitely a slog most of the time. The second book was much more interesting and this one was just very long-winded.

Also, this is some criticism for the series in general, I kept waiting for a reason that might explain this but seeing as there wasn't, here we go.. Many of the character names were utterly ridiculous. I cannot count the times I had to roll my eyes at Braden and Caden. I am sorry but these kind of American names are 100% guaranteed to break any kind of immersion I have in a fantasy setting. I kept thinking that this would be some kind of situation similar to where the the world is actually ours and the cataclysm caused everybody to go to.. this.. and the names were the remnants of humanity right now but NOPE. You can't have horseback warrior people with a clan system and rituals etc etc and then name them Braden and Caden. Same goes for the leader of the pathfinders..

I actually really LOVE one of the author's other series, the Firebird Chronicles, so this is definitely not a problem I have with the author in general. However, I was just a bit disappointed that this series was lacking what I know I enjoy about the author's writing.

I don’t quite know, but perhaps it was the over explaining that ruined this for me? After having written that someone has black circles under his eyes and twitches at every sound, you don’t have to also tell me that Shea suspects he was profoundly affected by what he just went through. Show, don’t tell, and never both at the same time. I liked following a more established couple (they grow nicely with each other), but their mutual adoration is a bit over the top sometimes. Plus, spoiler, nobody important dies, ever, which reduces tension quite a lot. I think I might try a different series now.

So so good. I have loved this series and I hope the author continues to write about the Broken Lands. It is such a cool world with really interesting characters. I loved Shea. Throughout the series she evolved and grew as a person and as a leader. Fallon was a great hero and a great compliment to Shea. I really enjoyed reading about how they grew together and eventually fell in love, that love growing even deeper in this book. This is definitely one of my favorites series. It's so well written and the action in this is so damn good. Read this series. You won't regret it.

This was a good ending to Shea and Fallon's story arc. I liked the three books and even though this felt a bit longwinded and perhaps one too many battle scenes, I still enjoyed it. The next book features a minor character in the same world. I will most likely read that one too.

(no original review - review on re-read March 2025)

I seriously can't believe I never wrote a review on this one despite multiple re-reads.

Lots happens in this book - it is long, and has several "acts" - but it is all riveting. I mentioned it in my review of book 2, but this is a series that really stays with me. The characters are wonderful, complicated people.

On the simplest level, I suppose you could call this a barbarian romantasy. It begins in book 1 with some typical tropes - super alpha barbarian horde leader determined to conquer the woman he's so drawn to. There's some parts that scrape on me a bit in book 1, with the way the barbarian warlord kind of overwhelms her into submission, but after the first book the two of them come to an accord, and honestly, they are great characters. And overall, this story is much less simple than a barbarian romantasy.

There's a dystopian element to it, in that this world is one that was once at at least our level of technological development, and probably actually a bit past it. But it fell to corruption, as different factions turned these horrific weapons on each other and broke the world...only a small fragment of humanity surviving in the place now called the Broken Lands. This series takes place about 1000 years after that event. Aside from a tiny fraction of the population - the pathfinders - no one really remembers much about the world before the Cataclysm. The pathfinders, we're told, saw the writing on the wall as the world was beginning to fracture, and they gathered as much knowledge and supplies, as well as things to be preserved (artwork, etc) into a remote base to try and prep to survive what was coming. They've taught their descendants much of this, and their organization of pathfinders try to serve as the thread holding the remote segments of surviving humanity together. Though they aren't immune to corruption themselves, which is actually the heart of the story.

It is complicated and fascinating, and as I said, it stays with me and draws me back year after year. This is my 4th time through, and I still wish the author gave us more with these characters. She does continue the Broken Lands series after this, following a new FMC/MMC pair, but I don't honestly find it comparable. They're nowhere near as compelling as characters. I wish we got more Shae and Fallon.

So anyway, that's the long-overdue review. I love it. If you give it a try, I hope you do too.

As far as grand conclusions go, this third instalment was quite a letdown.

My main issue is that I feel like White kind of lost her focus and drifted away from her original idea as to what pathfinders are. To me, they went from being good navigators to supernatural mist conquerors to basically just a bunch of librarians who have a fancy weapon in their basement. It didn't feel consistent. Also, the author went back to give us a background to Shea's tragic life and there as well, are many inconsistencies. One moment we are led to believe that her parents don't really like her, blame her for the deaths of many and are generally disappointed in her. Then this all just switches and then it's all about Fallon and her father bonding and her mother being all like "yeah, you go girl. Mommy's proud". It was just weird.

The entire plot of Griffin's miraculous reappearance and marching on them with an army of monsters was also incredibly anticlimactic. And once again, Shea is way too perfect. She is on the forefront of pretty much every battle, rides a freaking flying horse like the Valkyrie and is the only one who connects the missing links in the pathfinders' history. Not to forget that she is upgraded from telroi to battle queen, a title I find very weird and unfitting. I mean, what happens when the battle is over? And why is it a Warlord but a battle queen? The connection was missing here.

I also have to say I was sometimes annoyed that in this trilogy, the reader would get introduced to terms used by the Trateri, like tolroi and telroi, and yet, we'd get the information what these terms mean from Shea. Because in the first book of this series we are told that the Trateri are a pretty unknown barbarian tribe who have never ventured this far north. So how the hell does she know all these terms anyway?

I know this is nitpicking again, but this constant appearance of inconsistencies really bugged me.
I'm in no way saying this book is bad, and I did devour it in one sitting, but mostly because I wanted to know how this all ends.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Great series

Wayfarer's Keep is the third book in The Broken Lands series. This series should be read in order to fully appreciate the storyline and character development. The author indicates at the end of this book that this series will continue, however it will most likely be exploring other characters. I would love to see more of Shea and Fallon, even if they aren't the main characters in the next book.

Wayfarer's Keep has Shea returning *home* a vastly different person to when she left. She is now seen as a traitor to many of the Pathfinders, making her and Fallon's task of trying to unite them to face their common enemy a difficult one. Once again there is battles and betrayal aplenty. The many beasts and mythologicals testing the battle skills of the Anateri/Trateri and the Pathfinders. The strong relationship between Shea and Fallon is evident throughout the story. I was hoping for more of a showdown between Shea and her parents for their treatment of her, but that didn't eventuate.

I've enjoyed devouring this series over the last few days. I look forward to seeing where the storyline goes next once book 4 is released.
