Personal Reaction: I found Brain: Inner Workings of the Gray Matter to be incredibly interesting and informational. It talks about everything brain related, from brains in animals to nerves and brain mapping to senses and why they work the way they do.
Read Aloud: Due to this books long length I think it would be best read aloud to the class in short sections. It would be a great addition to a science unit, or more specifically a unit on the human body. The book has a great combination of both photographs and illustrations, which I would to be very unique and I think students would find to be interesting. Some of the language is more advanced, and I see this book fitting best into the curriculum of a fifth or sixth grade classroom. Overall, I think students would love learning about all the strange facts about the brain, as well as how it truly works.
Independent Read: Students who are looking to learn more in depth information on the brain would love this book.Brain: Inner Workings of the Gray Matter could also be used as a resource for a project on the brain.
Literary Elements: A variety of language is used throughout the book, this would be great to point out to students and show them how word choice can have a effect on a book.
