Noted Christian Writer. Vance Havner began writing the very first of his more than 40 books shortly after the start of his 70 year ministry. Vance's best known book, Though I Walk Through The Valley, details the loss of his beloved wife, Sarah. He was a dedicated evangelist who spoke locally at churches and nationally at conventions to large crowds and appreciative audiences. Billy Graham called Havner, "The most quoted preacher of the twentieth century." Through reading his books, thousands were led to experience God in a new and exciting way.
I heard Vance Havner preach at Moody's Founder's Week in Chicago in the years just before this book was published. He was my favorite speaker. He tended to repeat some of the same alliterative, witty wisdom each year. I call them Havnerisms. At random, I turned to page 64 and found, "We live in a world nauseated with its own notions, sick of its own sophistication." He condensed his beliefs into down-home expressions that were fun to hear, if you were in tune with God. But he fully intended his messages to have barbs for those who were out-of-tune with God. He preached with conviction and with determination to upset the status quo.
Vance was a country boy called by God to a difficult on-the-road ministry. Sometimes he didn't know where his next dollar was coming from. But he trusted God and waited to see where God would lead him next. This book reminisces back on his seventy years. He met a lot of well-known Christians during that time. I really enjoyed reading about his experiences. I've never read a biography quite like this one. Take a walk down a country road and see where it goes, . . .with Vance Havner--read this book!
If you have never read Vance Havner, you are missing a real treat! Simple, concise, and to the point is this author. I would have loved to hear him preach. I have read several of his other books, but this book is a fond "looking back" on his life.
Great advice from a great "traveling preacher" of yesteryear!
