I bought this book for my husband because he was interested in how maple syrup was made. It’s an easy read with beautiful pictures. I was surprised by how much information I didn’t know. After reading this book I would feel confident in making my own maple syrup, watch out Canada 🇨🇦!

Starts off with some great maple syrup history, including Native American folklore about how syrup-making began. Heavy on big, beautiful pictures, maybe a little light on the words. But I did learn quite a bit, including a picture and info about the fascinating Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's new Flavour Wheel for Maple Products. The taste of maple products had previously been considered difficult to describe, and has since been broken into 13 flavor families and 39 subfamilies, and is now as frou-frou as wine & cheese. Also learned about sugar-on-snow maple taffy, which I'd never seen before, and learned specifics about how different maple products were made. All are created by heating the syrup specific temperature amounts higher than the boiling point of water, which I learned actually changes throughout the day! I never knew that. So, this book almsot made me excited for winter. Almost. I'm still okay with the fact that it's a hurricane today & not a snowstorm.

Sweet read! With the COVID-19 pandemic lurking, I wasn't able to visit any sugar shacks during the maple sap run this year, so I created my own tour. A few nice recipes were included too. The Maple Sugar Pie was divine...

A good general overview on the history, practices, uses, and culture surrounding maple syrup production. The beautiful pictures make the experience of reading the book almost as tangible as a visit to a production site.
Reading level suitable for all ages.
